Magic booster packs differ because booster types serve different purposes and each set can use its own card pool, slot structure, treatments, and odds. A Play Booster is designed for both opening and drafting; a Collector Booster prioritizes premium treatments and collectible cards. For exact contents, check Wizards of the Coast’s collecting article for the specific set—there is no single card list or probability table that applies to every release.
Why Magic booster packs have different contents
Different boosters have different jobs
Play Boosters combined features of the former Set and Draft Boosters. Set Boosters emphasized a varied opening experience, with possibilities such as multiple rares, a foil, art cards, and cards from The List. Draft Boosters used a more predictable rarity structure to support Limited play. Play Boosters are intended to work for both opening for fun and drafting, so their contents balance those goals. Wizards explains the design in its Play Booster overview and its earlier articles on Set Boosters and Play Booster design.

Each set can configure its slots differently
A booster’s structure is also part of how a set is designed. Sets differ in their card pools, rarity distributions, special treatments, and the contents or probabilities assigned to particular slots. A general description of a Play Booster is therefore a guide to its format, not a guarantee that every set uses identical contents or odds.
What to expect in a Play Booster
In broad terms, a Play Booster can include commons, dedicated uncommon slots, a rare or mythic rare, a land, non-foil and traditional-foil wildcard opportunities, and a final slot that may contain a non-playable insert. The exact arrangement and possibilities depend on the set. The first Play Booster breakdown, for Murders at Karlov Manor, explicitly says details may change from set to set.

What the first-release odds do—and do not—mean
For that Murders at Karlov Manor example only, Wizards gave a rare-to-mythic distribution of six rares for every one mythic rare in the rare or mythic rare slot. It also said the final non-playable slot was a token, play aid, or ad card 65% of the time, an art card 30% of the time, and a signed art card 5% of the time. These figures describe that set’s configuration, not universal odds for Magic boosters.
Likewise, the Murders at Karlov Manor description gave the chance for one specified slot to contain a main-set common as 87.5%; a normal common or uncommon reprint from The List as 9.38%; a normal rare or mythic rare reprint from The List as 1.56%; or a Special Guests card from The List as 1.56%. Wizards also reported that two or more rares or mythic rares appeared 41% of the time in the configuration described in its Play Booster design article. Those are set-specific figures, not odds to apply to another release.
