Luxury brands are expanding repair and resale because these services extend a product’s useful life, keep the brand involved after the original sale, and create a role in the growing secondhand market. They also support broader circular-business strategies. That does not prove every program is profitable or that repair and resale automatically reduce new production; each model has different costs, controls and environmental effects.
Repair and resale solve different problems
Repair keeps an existing item with its current owner. Resale transfers that item to another owner after inspection, authentication, refurbishment or other preparation. Luxury companies increasingly operate, fund or partner in both areas, but the customer journey and business logic are not the same.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Repair: restores function or appearance and can extend the period in which a customer uses the original product.
- Resale: creates a controlled route for a pre-owned product to reach a new customer, sometimes after refurbishment and authentication.
The distinction matters when judging claims about sustainability. A repair may displace a replacement purchase or simply preserve an item that would have been used anyway. A resale transaction may give an item a second owner, but it does not by itself show that fewer new products were manufactured.
Why brands are building these services now
Product longevity becomes a service relationship
Luxury companies traditionally sell craftsmanship, materials and durability. Repair lets them continue delivering that promise after checkout. LVMH says its Fashion and Leather Goods and Watches and Jewelry maisons operate repair and care centers “to bolster the product longevity promise to customers.” The statement appears in its 2025 Universal Registration Document.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hermès describes a similar approach across its métiers. It says owners can request maintenance and repair worldwide and states: “Hermès objects are designed to last and be repaired because their technical design and manufacturing methods prioritize robustness and long-term use, in the tradition of saddlers.” The service turns after-sales care into a continuing relationship rather than a one-time warranty interaction. Availability, pricing and eligibility still depend on the product and market.
Resale gives brands a position in the secondhand life of their goods
Most luxury resale historically happened through independent dealers, marketplaces or private transactions. A brand-operated or brand-supported program gives the manufacturer a way to participate in that activity. LVMH cites Rimowa’s Re-Crafted as a takeback model: customer luggage is returned, restored and offered for resale. The group’s disclosure does not establish that the program is available in every country today, so customers should check local terms.
Kering says its 2021 investment in Vestiaire Collective supports interest in secondhand fashion and innovative business models. An investment in a resale platform is not the same as every Kering house selling there; it is one way for a luxury group to learn about or support the market while leaving day-to-day marketplace operations to a partner.

BCG and Vestiaire Collective’s 2025 report says nearly 80% of surveyed respondents cited affordability as a key reason to buy secondhand. The survey covered 7,800 people from Vestiaire Collective’s community, so the percentage should not be treated as a representative estimate of all luxury consumers.

For brands, a pre-owned channel can introduce aspirational customers to a house at a lower entry price. It can also create a future path to first-hand purchases. That opportunity comes with a positioning risk: if the difference between new and used prices is unclear, or if condition and authenticity are uncertain, customers may lose confidence in both channels.
The same BCG and Vestiaire Collective analysis emphasizes reducing transaction friction, balancing first- and secondhand prices, and building trust with authentication and quality guarantees. Those are operational requirements, not marketing slogans. A customer needs to know who inspected the item, what condition standard was applied, whether repairs are disclosed and what happens if the item fails authentication.
Circularity is becoming a strategic business category
Repair and resale are visible parts of a broader shift toward circular business models. Kering’s 2026 strategy describes expanding circular services from repair to resale in its 10-year impact report. GANNI’s 2024 circularity report says the company prioritized resale and repair as near-term circular-business drivers.

These are strategic choices, not universal proof of commercial success. GANNI also reports that operating its own resale platforms was resource-heavy and costly. The economics depend on collection, transport, inspection, photography, storage, customer service, technology and the rate at which items actually sell.

How luxury resale and repair programs operate
| Operating model | What happens | Main advantages | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand repair network | The brand receives an item, diagnoses it, performs authorized work and returns it to the owner. | High control over workmanship, materials and customer communication; strengthens the original product relationship. | Capacity, turnaround time, price and eligibility vary by brand, product and market. |
| Brand takeback and resale | The brand accepts a returned product, restores or grades it, then lists it for a new buyer. | Direct control over condition, presentation, pricing and customer data. | Requires reverse logistics, inventory handling and resale demand; current availability may be limited geographically. |
| Partner resale platform | A specialist marketplace handles some combination of seller intake, authentication, listing, payment and shipping. | Faster audience reach and specialist infrastructure without building every capability internally. | Less control over presentation, pricing and customer experience; partnership does not mean every brand participates. |
| Store-based archive resale | Past-season or pre-owned products are sold through dedicated physical locations. | Customers can inspect items in person and the brand controls the retail environment. | Locations limit reach, and stores require staff, space and inventory investment. |
| Repair-partner service | A specialist performs approved repairs or alterations under a brand collaboration. | Adds capacity and specialist skills without creating every workshop internally. | Service scope, quality assurance and geographic coverage depend on the partner agreement. |
Examples illustrate the range. Hermès describes bespoke after-sales service worldwide, while LVMH reports brand repair centers and Louis Vuitton workshops. GANNI reports POSTMODERN archive stores in Copenhagen and Oslo and a UK collaboration with SOJO for repairs and alterations. Its own report says running resale platforms was resource-heavy and costly, which explains why a store or partner model can be more practical than a fully proprietary marketplace for some companies.
The decisions behind a resale strategy
BCG and Vestiaire Collective say there is no universal playbook. A useful comparison looks at the following trade-offs rather than asking whether one model is simply “better.”
| Decision axis | Higher-control approach | Lower-investment approach |
|---|---|---|
| Brand control | Operate intake, authentication, refurbishment and sales directly. | Use a specialist partner for some or all stages. |
| Investment and effort | Fund workshops, logistics, technology, staff and inventory systems. | Pay or share value with a partner that already has infrastructure. |
| Customer friction | Offer a single branded journey with clear collection and service steps. | Send customers between brand and platform systems, potentially adding handoffs. |
| Authentication and quality | Set and enforce the brand’s own inspection and grading rules. | Rely on a partner’s process, contract controls and reporting. |
| Inventory and pricing | Control what is accepted, how it is priced and when it is discounted. | Accept the partner’s marketplace dynamics and demand patterns. |
| Audience reach | Reach existing customers directly through stores or owned channels. | Access a larger established secondhand audience through a platform. |
| Brand positioning | Shape the setting, storytelling and scarcity signals around pre-owned goods. | Benefit from marketplace traffic but accept less control over context. |
For a high-value item, authentication and condition disclosure are central to trust. A credible listing should identify the item, explain its condition, disclose repairs or replacements where relevant, and state the applicable return or guarantee policy. A luxury house also has to decide whether resale inventory should sit beside new collections, in separate stores, or entirely on a partner channel.

- $210 billion to $220 billion: BCG and Vestiaire Collective’s estimate for the secondhand fashion and luxury market in 2025.
- $320 billion to $360 billion: the same report’s projected market size for 2030. This is a projection, not a guaranteed outcome.
- Nearly 80%: the share of respondents in the report’s 7,800-person Vestiaire Collective community survey who cited affordability as a key secondhand purchase motivation. It is not a survey of all luxury consumers.
- 40 of 42 brands, or 95%: the share assessed by Stand.earth in 2025 as offering some form of resale or repair program. The sample is cross-brand and not a luxury-only statistic; the assessment is available in its 2025 scorecard.
- 96,000 repairs: repairs Hermès reported its after-sales service carried out in 2025. The number is company-reported and does not describe every luxury brand.
- 1,160 services: GANNI’s 2024 report of SOJO services, including repairs and alterations.
- 660 of 2,000 returns, or 33%: damaged returns GANNI says it rescued and restocked during a six-month pilot.
These figures measure different things: market value, a consumer survey, a cross-brand assessment and company operating outputs. They should not be combined into a single industry success rate.
What happens when a customer uses a program
A typical repair journey
- Check eligibility. Use the brand’s official service page or store to confirm that the product, material and damage are accepted in your market.
- Submit details and images. The brand or partner may ask for photographs, proof of purchase, serial information or a description of the fault.
- Receive an assessment. The service center identifies the work, estimated cost and timing. Some repairs are free under a warranty; others are chargeable.
- Approve the work. Ask whether replacement parts will be original, whether the repair changes the item’s condition grade and what happens if additional damage is found.
- Inspect on return. Check the workmanship promptly and keep the service record for future maintenance or resale.
A typical branded resale or takeback journey
- Confirm what the program accepts. Programs may restrict product category, age, condition, country of purchase or proof of ownership.
- Obtain a valuation or offer. The amount may depend on demand, condition, completeness and current retail pricing; an offer is not the same as a guaranteed resale price.
- Hand over the item securely. Follow the stated shipping, store-drop-off or collection process and document the item’s condition.
- Wait for inspection and authentication. The program may reject an item, revise its offer or route it for refurbishment.
- Complete the transaction. Read when payment is made, what fees apply, and whether the item is sold with a guarantee or return period.
Environmental claims require care
Keeping products in use can support lower replacement demand, but repair and resale alone do not prove a reduction in total production or emissions. Transport to a service center, replacement materials, cleaning, packaging, storage and reverse logistics all have impacts. A resale platform can also encourage additional buying rather than replace a new purchase.
GANNI says its repair impact was calculated with SOJO displacement-rate calculations and that circular-business results were not yet included in its corporate carbon-footprint calculations. That makes the figures useful as a company-reported method and outcome, not independent proof of a net environmental benefit. The same caution applies to other brand claims unless they publish a transparent baseline, system boundary and accounting method.

What to check before choosing a service
- Geography: Is the service available in your country, and where will the item be shipped?
- Eligibility: Are vintage items, altered products, third-party repairs or missing accessories excluded?
- Price: Is the quote fixed, estimated or subject to change after inspection?
- Timing: Is there a stated turnaround range, and are seasonal delays possible?
- Authenticity: Who performs authentication, and what happens if the item cannot be verified?
- Condition: Does the listing disclose stains, wear, replaced parts and prior repairs?
- Guarantee and returns: What remedy is available if a repair fails or a resale item differs from its description?
- Data and records: Will you receive a service history, invoice or certificate that may help with later maintenance?
For routine care, follow the item’s own brand instructions. A general leather conditioner is not a substitute for authorized repair or restoration, and applying an incompatible product can make damage worse.
Where the expansion is heading
The direction is toward a mix of services rather than one standard luxury resale model. Brands with specialist workshops may emphasize repair and maintenance. Groups seeking secondhand reach may invest in or partner with established marketplaces. Others may test takeback, archive stores or regional repair partners before deciding whether a fully owned operation justifies its cost.
The durable strategic reasons are clear: longer product relationships, participation in resale, access to price-sensitive customers and a visible circularity program. The commercial and environmental results remain model-specific. A credible program therefore needs more than a resale label: it needs transparent acceptance rules, authentication, condition standards, service capacity and evidence about what happens to products after collection.
