Their readings depend on the pollutant, sensing method, temperature, humidity, airflow, placement, data processing, maintenance and age. A device can track changes consistently while remaining biased high or low, and a correction that works in one room or season may fail elsewhere.
What a low-cost air-quality sensor is actually telling you
Most inexpensive monitors estimate a pollutant or environmental condition from a small sensor and software. The displayed number is therefore an estimate made under particular conditions, not a laboratory result automatically valid everywhere. Before judging a reading, identify exactly what the instrument measures, where it is intended to operate and how its data are processed.

Accuracy and precision are different
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes accuracy as closeness to the actual concentration in air. Its consumer guidance puts it this way: “Accuracy is measure of closeness to what is actually in air.” Precision describes repeatability—whether repeated measurements under the same conditions agree with one another.
| Property | What it means | Example of a misleading result |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | How close the reading is to the true concentration | A monitor consistently reports 18 µg/m³ when the reference value is 12 µg/m³. |
| Precision | How closely repeated readings agree | The monitor repeatedly reports about 18 µg/m³, even though that value is biased high. |
A precise but inaccurate sensor can still be useful for observing trends—such as whether particles rise during cooking—provided you do not mistake its number for a verified concentration.

There is no single accuracy percentage for the category
EPA consumer guidance does not publish one accuracy percentage that applies to every current low-cost monitor. Performance can differ between manufacturers and even between units from the same manufacturer. EPA also says, “There are currently no widely accepted indoor performance criteria used for most low-cost air pollutant monitors.” Treat claims such as “accurate to X percent” as product- and test-specific unless the maker identifies the pollutant, conditions, reference instrument, averaging period and method used.
Why readings can diverge from actual conditions
Humidity changes the sensor response
Relative humidity can alter a sensor’s electrical, optical or chemical response. High humidity may also cause water to interact with particles or create condensation. The size and direction of the resulting error depend on the device and the pollutant; there is no universal humidity correction that makes every model reliable.
Temperature extremes affect components and chemistry
Very hot or cold conditions can change sensor sensitivity, airflow and the behavior of the sampled air. EPA specifically identifies temperature extremes and high relative humidity as conditions that can produce inaccurate results. A monitor moved from a heated room to a cold porch may therefore show a shift that reflects the environment around the instrument rather than a real pollutant change.

A sensor may react to substances other than the pollutant named on its display. If a device is not sufficiently selective or sensitive, gases, particles or vapors in the mixture can influence its signal. For example, a reading labeled for one pollutant may rise because another contaminant affects the sensing element. Without evidence showing how the model behaves in realistic mixtures, the displayed value should be treated as an indicator.

Placement and airflow determine what the inlet samples
A monitor beside a cooking pan, fireplace, open window, air purifier outlet or exhaust fan samples a local plume, not necessarily the room average. Shelves, walls and enclosures can restrict airflow. Sunlight or a nearby heater can create a local temperature and humidity different from the rest of the room. Outdoor siting has the same issue: a unit near a road, wall or obstruction may not represent conditions across the site.
EPA field-testing guidance calls for unrestricted airflow and similar inlet heights when sensors are compared with a reference monitor. Those requirements illustrate why a small change in siting can change the result; they are test conditions, not a guarantee for every household installation.
Processing and averaging can make two devices appear to disagree
Monitors may average readings over different intervals, smooth spikes, apply internal corrections or report a delayed value. A one-minute result and a one-hour average will not respond to a short cooking event in the same way. When comparing datasets, align the time period, timestamp, units and data-handling method. Otherwise, an apparent sensor error may simply be a difference in processing.
Sensors age and need maintenance
Sensing elements, filters and fans can degrade. Dust buildup, blocked inlets, depleted reagents or a failing fan may reduce responsiveness or increase noise. EPA notes that low-cost monitors have limited lifespans and can become less reliable. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement instructions, record the installation date and check the stated service life. A device that once tracked trends well should not be assumed to perform identically years later.

Evidence from one environment does not automatically transfer to another
An outdoor field evaluation does not establish indoor performance. Indoor spaces have different pollutant mixtures, ventilation patterns, humidity cycles and source locations. Select evidence for the pollutant and setting that matter to you; a test of outdoor particulate matter in dry weather cannot by itself validate indoor readings during humid cooking events.
How to check whether a reading is meaningful
1. Confirm the pollutant and intended setting
Read the technical specifications and identify whether the unit measures particulate matter, a specific gas, carbon dioxide or only environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Confirm whether it is designed for indoor use, outdoor use or both. Do not assume that outdoor-only equipment is suitable for a bedroom, office or school.
2. Find independent test details
Look for evaluations that name the pollutant, concentration range, temperature, relative humidity, averaging period and reference instrument. Stronger studies explain how sensors were colocated and how data were adjusted. EPA’s Evaluation of Emerging Air Sensor Performance resources describe comparisons with reference instruments and the statistical treatment needed to interpret them.

3. Compare under shared conditions
For a serious check, place the low-cost sensor beside a reference monitor that is appropriate for the pollutant and test purpose. EPA protocols use Federal Reference Method (FRM) or Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) monitors as references in their prescribed evaluations. Keep the instruments exposed to the same air for comparable time periods, and document temperature, humidity, airflow and any enclosure.

4. Understand the siting numbers in EPA protocols
EPA’s air-sensor field-testing guidance specifies conditions for its evaluation work:
| Protocol detail | Value or condition | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate relative humidity condition used in PM2.5 protocol guidance | 40% RH | A chamber test condition, not a promise that a consumer device is accurate at 40% RH. |
| Elevated relative humidity condition | 85% RH | A protocol condition; humidity above this level can be difficult to reproduce and may cause condensation. |
| Cold-temperature concern | Below 20°C | EPA notes that colder conditions can be difficult to reproduce in chambers. |
| Horizontal separation in the prescribed field evaluation | Within 20 m of the reference monitor | Test-siting guidance, not a general installation guarantee. |
| Difference in inlet heights | Within 1 m | Used to make the compared samples more alike during testing. |
The protocol conditions come from EPA’s performance-testing protocol guidance. They define a controlled comparison; they do not certify every product at those values.
5. Treat calibration as local and limited
Field calibration can improve agreement with a reference at a particular site and time. EPA describes calibration as potentially useful, but a calibration derived in one environment is not proof of universal accuracy. A relationship learned during a dry season, for one pollutant mixture and one unit, may change when humidity, sources or sensor age changes. Keep the original data, document the reference instrument and conditions, and avoid applying a single correction factor indefinitely.
6. Investigate unusual values before deleting them
A sudden spike may be a real short-lived event, a local plume, condensation, an obstruction or an instrument fault. Check what happened in the room, inspect the inlet and compare with a second instrument or reference where possible. EPA cautions that questionable data points and systematic bias can occur. Flag and investigate anomalous data rather than silently removing every inconvenient result.

What to examine when choosing or comparing monitors
EPA does not endorse a specific indoor monitor. Compare evidence rather than relying on a feature count or a large display. The following questions expose the differences that matter:
- Pollutant: Does the device measure the contaminant you need, and is its sensitivity appropriate for the concentrations expected?
- Setting: Is the evidence from indoor, outdoor or both environments? Are the source patterns and ventilation similar to yours?
- Reference: Was it compared with an FRM, FEM or another documented reference instrument?
- Conditions: What temperature and humidity ranges were tested? Were high-humidity or cold conditions included?
- Time basis: Are results reported as instantaneous values, short averages or long averages?
- Metrics: Does the report separate accuracy from precision and disclose systematic bias?
- Adjustment: Was calibration performed, and is the correction tied to a particular site, season or unit?
- Care: What cleaning, filter or replacement steps are required, and what service life does the manufacturer state?
- Installation: Does the monitor need weather protection, an enclosure or a specific inlet orientation?
Use the EPA Air Sensor Guidebook for broader advice on planning, operating and interpreting sensor projects.
How to use a low-cost monitor responsibly at home
Use trends to guide investigation
Repeated rises and falls can help you identify activities worth investigating: cooking, cleaning, ventilation changes, combustion or outdoor smoke. Pair the graph with a log of events and weather. A trend can support a decision to improve ventilation or seek professional testing, but it does not by itself establish a regulatory exceedance or a medical risk threshold.

Keep the inlet representative
Place the monitor where people breathe, away from direct sources and blocked airflow. Do not hide it behind furniture or place it directly in an outlet stream. Keep placement consistent when comparing days, and record changes such as a new filter, open window or moved appliance.
Respond to persistent, plausible changes
If readings remain high across comparable periods, verify the instrument’s age and maintenance, check temperature and humidity, and compare with another suitable monitor or a reference service. If only one device shows an implausible value, treat it as a troubleshooting signal rather than proof of a dangerous concentration.
How long does a low-cost air-pollution monitor last?
There is no single lifespan for the category. Service life depends on the sensing technology, exposure, contamination, fan and filter condition, duty cycle and the manufacturer’s design. EPA advises that monitors have limited lifespans and may become less reliable. Use the model’s stated replacement interval, follow maintenance instructions and watch for drifting baselines, slow response, unstable values or repeated failures. A calibration performed early in the device’s life should not be treated as permanent validation.
The practical standard for trusting a number
Trust a low-cost reading most when the pollutant is clearly identified, the device is intended for the setting, the environment falls within tested conditions, the inlet is properly placed, the data interval matches the comparison and independent evidence shows agreement with a suitable reference. Even then, regard the result as context-specific. Low-cost sensors can reveal useful patterns, but their numbers require environmental context, documented validation and ongoing care before they support a precise claim about what is in the air.
