The usual causes are an unsuitable app or browser, a capture region that includes a scrollbar or floating controls, non-default zoom, extensions or security software, and content that changes while it is being captured. Make the target simpler, capture at 100% zoom with smooth one-direction scrolling, and switch to a native full-page feature or another browser when stitching still breaks.
What a “scrolling capture failed” error means
Desktop scrolling capture normally takes overlapping screen images while it scrolls, then joins them. A failure can occur before scrolling starts, during movement, or while the images are being aligned. TechSmith uses the literal message “Scrolling Capture Failed” for one Snagit macOS case, but the underlying problem is broader: the software cannot find stable visual overlap or cannot control the target window.
That is different from a normal completion. A phone may stop because it reached the bottom, a page may have no more content, or a device may have reached its own height limit. Treat the result as a limit or completion only after checking the captured endpoint.
First identify the target and platform

A full webpage capture is not equivalent to capturing any scrollable application. Browser tools can request the page directly; desktop and phone tools often stitch what is visible on screen. The latter are more sensitive to movement and visual changes.

Fix desktop scrolling capture in a reliable order

Simplify the selection
Maximize the browser or application window. Select only the content that must appear, keep the scrollbar outside the selection, and remove blank margins, side rails, and unrelated ads. A smaller, cleaner rectangle gives the stitcher more stable overlap.

Remove moving controls
Close floating toolbars, accessibility bubbles, chat launchers, newsletter prompts, video controls, and other overlays. If an overlay cannot be closed, exclude it from the capture region.

Return to default zoom
Set the target application to 100% (its default zoom). Browser zoom, operating-system display scaling, and page-level magnification can change the apparent overlap between frames.

Scroll smoothly in one direction
Use a steady downward movement. Do not zigzag, reverse direction, pause over animated areas, or drag the scrollbar. Irregular motion makes matching consecutive frames harder.

Retry in a clean browser session
Use another supported browser or an incognito/private window. A private window usually disables third-party extensions, which is a quick way to test whether an extension is intercepting scrolling or changing the page.

Test other interference
Unsupported applications or browsers, third-party utilities, endpoint-security software, and hardware drivers can intercept window control or screen capture. Follow your security vendor’s procedure if you test with protection temporarily changed, and restore normal protection immediately.

Change capture mode
If automatic scrolling still fails, try panoramic capture or a browser’s native full-page command. Panoramic mode can help with an application that does not expose a normal scroll surface, but parallax pages can still defeat it.

- A Chrome change can require enabling Allow JavaScript from Apple Events for the documented automation path.
- In Mail, scrolling arrows can disappear when the pointer moves from the message header into the message body.
- Panoramic capture is an alternative when auto-scroll fails, although parallax websites may remain difficult.
Menu names and behavior can change with current macOS, Chrome, Mail, and Snagit releases, so use the support instructions for your installed versions rather than assuming these cases apply to every Mac.
Fix scrolling screenshots on a phone
Use the phone’s native control first
Native capture knows more about the phone’s display pipeline than a generic stitching app. On Xiaomi, take a screenshot, tap Scroll, set the endpoint, and save. Xiaomi notes that Gallery Editor permissions may be needed to view and save the result. Supported labels and locations vary by software version.
On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, take a screenshot and use Scroll Capture from the screenshot controls. The option is not present on every model, app, or software release.
Interpret an early stop correctly
An early stop can mean the tool reached the bottom, the app refused further scrolling, or stitching became unreliable. HONOR states that its Scrollshot stops at an approximate 14,000-pixel height. That is an HONOR-specific threshold, not a universal Android or browser limit.

HONOR also identifies floating windows, dynamically refreshed content, and large amounts of similar content as interference. Close floating windows, wait for the page to finish refreshing, and try a shorter capture segment when the same pattern repeats for a long distance.
When native scroll capture is unavailable
- Check the phone model’s current manual for a scrolling or full-page option.
- Try the same content in a supported browser if the original app does not expose scroll capture.
- Capture several ordinary screenshots and join them manually when the content changes too often for automatic stitching.
Use a browser’s full-page feature for webpages
For a webpage rather than an arbitrary app window, Microsoft documents an Edge Screenshot tool that can capture a full webpage. Availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. If the command is missing, update Edge where permitted or use another browser’s current full-page feature.
Browser-level capture can avoid visible scrolling, but it is still affected by lazy-loaded images, scripts that refresh content, fixed headers, and pages that use parallax effects. Let the page settle before capturing, and verify that images and embedded sections actually loaded.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Capture never starts
Confirm that the target app or browser is supported, the selection is inside the window, and no security utility is blocking control. Retry in a private window or another browser.
The result stops halfway
Check whether the page actually ended or a device-specific height limit was reached. Remove floating controls, wait for dynamic content to settle, and split unusually tall content into sections.
The image has seams or duplicated lines
Restore 100% zoom, exclude the scrollbar, slow the scroll, and keep movement in one direction. Repeated rows and animated regions may require shorter segments.
Only one website fails
The page may use parallax, aggressive lazy loading, a live feed, or an extension-specific layout. Test a private window, disable extensions, wait for all images, and try the browser’s native full-page tool.
Phone capture omits the Scroll button
The model, app, or current software may not support scrolling capture. Check the manufacturer’s instructions, try the content in a browser, or use several normal screenshots.
Reliability, quality, and cost choices
- For a one-off phone conversation or document: use native scroll capture and verify the endpoint.
- For a normal webpage: prefer a browser full-page command when available; it avoids manual stitching.
- For an unsupported desktop app: simplify the selection and use panoramic capture, then split the result if it becomes too tall.

FAQ
Is a long screenshot the same as a PDF?
No. A long screenshot is one raster image, while a PDF can preserve pages, paper sizes, margins, and page ranges. Choose the format based on whether the reader needs a continuous image or a printable document.
Can I recover content that was never captured?
No. If a dynamic section failed to load or a device stopped at its limit, recapture after fixing the cause or capture smaller sections; stitching cannot restore missing pixels.
Should I disable security software permanently?
No. Only follow the security vendor’s controlled troubleshooting procedure, then restore normal protection. Prefer a clean browser session or different capture mode first.
