Local AI translation can produce fluent text and still get a financial concept, number, or label wrong. Reduce that risk by giving the system context-rich terminology, using finance-aware controls when available, checking every material figure against the source, and having a qualified bilingual finance reviewer assess consequential documents. There is no established universal accuracy percentage for local AI translation of financial terms.
Why financial terms need more than a word-for-word glossary
A financial term gets its meaning from the product, document, jurisdiction, and surrounding text. A bare source-to-target word list may not tell a translation system which concept is intended—or tell a reviewer why one equivalent is preferred over another. The right rendering can vary by context, language, and financial usage, so disputed terms need domain-qualified review.

ISO 12616-1:2021 addresses basic translation-oriented terminology collections. Its workflow covers collecting, researching, documenting, using, and maintaining terminology; the standard’s preview also describes recording terms found during translation so related documents remain consistent. See ISO 12616-1:2021 and its preview.
How to improve a local AI translation workflow
1. Build a context-rich glossary
List the terms that carry financial meaning: product and account names, acronyms, regulatory concepts, and labels used in tables. For each entry, record:
#1 Best Overall
- The source term and approved target-language equivalent.
- A definition or short concept note.
- An example or context showing how the term is used.
- Any alternative wording that should not be used, and why.
Ask a finance subject-matter reviewer to resolve disputed equivalents. Reuse and maintain the collection across related documents instead of rebuilding it each time.
2. Preserve context around the text
Keep headings, surrounding sentences, tables, and footnotes with the material being translated whenever possible. Tell the translator or model and reviewer the jurisdiction, document type, audience, and relevant product or accounting context. These details help clarify what a term and its figures refer to; they are practical safeguards, not a tested prompt recipe for local models.

3. Use finance-aware settings when they fit
Some translation services expose domain settings or glossary controls. For example, the European Commission’s eTranslation resources list a Finance style and the ability to upload a glossary. The Commission describes coverage of all 24 official EU languages and some others, and eligibility for specified user groups based in EU or Digital Europe-affiliated countries. This is an example of a hosted service, not evidence of offline operation; check current access and data-handling terms before using it for sensitive material. Details are on the European Commission eTranslation page.

It supports the use of expert input in glossary work, not a general accuracy claim. See the DG FISMA final-report page.

4. Verify figures and their labels
Do not assume numbers survived translation just because the prose reads smoothly. Compare each material amount, currency, percentage, date, decimal or grouping marker, and table relationship with the source. Confirm that the figure is attached to the correct account or reporting category and still means, for example, gross rather than net or owed rather than paid.
A 2019 financial-services machine-translation case study identifies number localization as a relevant issue, alongside terminology. Its available summary does not quantify how often number errors occur, so it does not justify an error-rate estimate. See “Machine Translation in the Financial Services Industry: a Case Study”.
5. Match human review to the consequences
Prioritize output that could change a payment instruction, balance, rate, fee, obligation, disclosure, or regulatory interpretation. Have a qualified bilingual reviewer with financial-domain knowledge check those passages and record approved corrections in the glossary. ISO 5060:2024 covers evaluation of human translation, post-edited machine translation, and unedited machine output; it also addresses evaluator qualifications and sampling. It offers a framework for evaluation, not a finance-specific risk-ranking rule. See ISO 5060:2024.
6. Check data handling before uploading
For a hosted translation service, review current data-handling, retention, and contractual terms before submitting financial documents. OECD identifies input ownership and privacy, as well as legal responsibility for consequences of translation mistakes, as challenges in high-stakes machine-translation settings. See OECD’s Not lost in translation (2023).

What is—and is not—established about accuracy
The cited material does not establish a universal accuracy rate for local AI translation of financial terminology, a model-by-model or language-pair failure rate, or a validated accuracy comparison between local and hosted translation. The financial case study flags terminology and number localization but the available details do not support a quantified conclusion. Treat accuracy as something to evaluate for your own language pair, document type, and risk level—not as a percentage that can be assumed in advance.
