Local AI runs at least part of a model on your laptop instead of sending every request to a remote server. That can make a feature feel slow or use more energy when the workload keeps the CPU, GPU or neural-processing hardware busy, especially on battery power. However, there is no universal battery-drain percentage or speed penalty: the result depends on the model, task, hardware, operating-system version, power mode and other work happening at the same time.
What “local AI” means on a laptop
A local, or on-device, AI feature performs some or all inference on the computer where you are working. The model may use a neural processing unit (NPU), an integrated or discrete GPU, the CPU, system memory and storage. Keeping computation on the laptop can improve privacy, reduce dependence on an internet connection and avoid a round trip to a server. It also means your own hardware has to supply the processing time and energy.

“Local” is not a single performance class. A small, quantized model on a recent NPU-equipped laptop is a different workload from a larger model running on a CPU. Some features also combine local and remote processing. Apple says Apple Intelligence evaluates whether a request can be handled on-device; more complex requests can be sent to Private Cloud Compute. Microsoft describes Phi Silica as a small, NPU-optimized language model designed to run entirely on supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Those are vendor-specific implementations, not a guarantee that every AI feature on every laptop is local.
Availability is also conditional. Hardware support, Windows or macOS version, language, region and the particular application determine which model is installed and where a request runs. Apple’s current Apple Intelligence setup guidance lists 7 GB of on-device storage, in addition to compatible hardware, software, language and region requirements. Microsoft’s Copilot+ documentation applies to supported PCs and now includes Windows 11 version 26H2 in its change log.

Why is my laptop slow when using AI?
The task may be larger than the hardware can handle comfortably
Generating a long response, summarizing a large document, transcribing audio or analyzing images can keep an accelerator or CPU occupied for an extended period. An NPU can be efficient for the operations it supports, but it does not make every model or every operation free. If a feature falls back to the CPU or GPU, response time and heat can rise sharply.
Memory pressure causes secondary slowdowns
AI models need memory for weights, intermediate data and the application hosting them. When available RAM is low, the operating system may move data to storage. That paging competes with the model and with ordinary applications, so the whole laptop can feel sluggish. Closing unused browser tabs, editors and virtual machines can help establish whether memory pressure, rather than the AI feature alone, is the limiting factor.
Heat can reduce clock speeds
A sustained inference workload produces heat. Once the cooling system reaches its limits, the laptop may reduce processor frequencies to stay within its thermal envelope. The first request can therefore feel quick while a long session becomes slower. Fan noise, a hot chassis and performance that improves after a pause are clues that thermal behavior is involved. A cooling accessory is not a universal solution; airflow, room temperature, firmware and the model’s actual power draw all matter.

On battery, many laptops favor lower energy use. The operating system can limit processor performance, delay background activity or choose a more conservative graphics setting. Those choices can make an AI feature appear slower even though the model has not changed. Compare the same task on battery and with the charger connected before concluding that an update or model is at fault.

Other work may be competing for the same resources
Cloud-sync, indexing, antivirus scans, video calls and operating-system maintenance can consume CPU, storage bandwidth or memory while an AI task is running. Correlation is not proof that the model caused all of the slowdown. Repeating the task after ordinary background work settles gives a cleaner comparison.
Why does AI drain my laptop battery?
Battery capacity is finite, and active computation converts more of that stored energy into work and heat than an idle desktop does. A local AI request can therefore reduce runtime when it keeps an accelerator, CPU, GPU, display or cooling fan active. The amount varies with the model, request length, number of requests, screen brightness, wireless activity, power policy and battery condition.
No comparable independent measurement establishes a typical percentage of laptop battery consumed by local AI, nor a universal slowdown figure. A claim such as “AI uses 20 percent of your battery” is incomplete unless it identifies the exact laptop, model, software build, request pattern, starting charge, display setting and test method. Microsoft’s descriptions of Phi Silica’s low latency and energy efficiency are design statements, not cross-device laboratory results.

It is also not correct to assume that a feature advertised as AI always uses the same path. Apple’s architecture is an explicit example: many Apple Intelligence requests are processed on-device, while requests requiring greater computational capacity may use Private Cloud Compute.

How to tell whether the AI feature is actually local
- Identify the exact feature and app. Record the feature name, application version, laptop model and operating-system version. “AI” in a product name does not specify where inference occurs.
- Check the vendor’s support requirements. Confirm compatible hardware, language and region. Apple publishes device and software requirements for Apple Intelligence; Microsoft specifies supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs for Phi Silica.
- Test connectivity cautiously. A feature that stops working offline may depend on a server, but an offline-capable feature can still use remote services for some requests. Treat this as a clue, not proof.
- Observe the workload. Note whether the delay happens only during generation or also while opening apps, browsing and typing. A system-wide slowdown points toward thermal, memory or background activity rather than one model operation.
A practical diagnosis for slowness and battery loss
1. Reproduce one controlled task
Use the same prompt, document or image twice. Record whether the laptop is on battery or power, the charge level, display brightness and which other applications are open. Consistent conditions are more useful than comparing unrelated AI tasks.
2. Separate speed from endurance
Ask two different questions: “Does the response take longer?” and “Does the battery percentage fall faster?” A task can be responsive but energy-intensive, or slow because of memory and thermal pressure without being the largest battery consumer. Test ordinary activities, such as web browsing or video playback, for comparison.
3. Watch resource and thermal behavior
Use the platform’s current activity and process views to see whether CPU, GPU, NPU, memory or a particular application remains busy. Labels differ between macOS and Windows versions, so follow the screens for your installed release rather than copying an iPhone guide onto a laptop. Sustained fan activity, a warm chassis and progressively longer responses suggest thermal limits; a nearly full memory graph suggests contention.

Repeat the task with the charger connected and, if available, with the system’s balanced and low-power settings. If performance changes substantially, the power policy is part of the explanation. Do not infer that the charger itself makes the model faster; it may simply allow the system to use a less restrictive policy.

5. Account for updates
If the problem began immediately after an operating-system update, background indexing, app optimization or other update-related work may still be running. Apple says on iPhone and iPad that update tasks can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance and recommends waiting a few days before reassessing. That guidance is for those devices, not a Mac menu procedure, but the timing is a useful diagnostic clue on any platform.
6. Check battery condition separately
A worn battery has less usable capacity, so the same workload produces a larger percentage drop than it did when the laptop was new. If the operating system reports poor battery health or a service recommendation, treat that as a battery-maintenance issue rather than evidence that the AI model suddenly became inefficient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mac power modes: which trade-off applies?
On supported Macs, Apple provides power modes that change the balance between energy use, performance and fan behavior. The exact menu and eligible models can change with macOS releases, so verify the current options for your model.
| Mode | Apple’s stated behavior | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Balances energy use and performance. | Routine work and mixed workloads. | No deliberate bias toward maximum battery life or maximum sustained performance. |
| Low Power Mode | Reduces energy use to increase battery life. | Long sessions away from an outlet when response time is acceptable. | Intensive AI work may take longer because the system prioritizes efficiency. |
| High Power Mode | Can permit higher fan speeds and may improve performance for very intensive workloads on specified Mac models. | Sustained, demanding work when connected to power or when performance matters most. | More fan noise and energy use; it is unavailable on models that do not support it. |
Apple’s guidance includes a narrow recommendation for certain 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations: a 96W USB-C adapter is recommended when using High Power Mode while charging. That is a model- and configuration-specific charging note, not a general requirement for running AI.

Windows laptops and Copilot+ hardware
Microsoft identifies Phi Silica as an NPU-optimized local language model for supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. An NPU can handle supported AI operations without assigning every operation to the general-purpose CPU, but “NPU-optimized” does not mean that every feature, prompt or application uses only the NPU. The application, model and Windows build determine the execution path.
For a Windows diagnosis, use the battery and power pages and the current Task Manager or equivalent activity view supplied with your installed Windows release. Look for the application that remains active, whether memory is near capacity and whether the system is on a battery-saver policy. Microsoft’s component documentation does not provide a universal battery percentage for Phi Silica, so measure your own repeatable workload instead of applying a generic number.
How to stop AI features from slowing down your laptop
- Reduce simultaneous load. Close unneeded applications and browser tabs before a long generation, transcription or image-analysis session.
- Use the appropriate power mode. Select a lower-power mode when endurance is the priority; use a performance-oriented mode only when your model and laptop support it and the extra heat and fan noise are acceptable.
- Keep software current, then allow settling time. Install supported operating-system and application updates, but do not judge battery life immediately after an update if background work is still evident.
- Improve the physical environment. Keep air vents clear and use the laptop on a hard surface. Heat reduction can prevent sustained throttling, but it cannot overcome an undersized model or insufficient memory.
- Shorten or divide the workload. Summarize a large document in sections, reduce unnecessary context and avoid repeatedly regenerating the same long response. This lowers total computation without changing system settings.
- Prefer power for sustained intensive work. If a session is expected to run for a long time, connecting the correct charger avoids repeatedly discharging the battery and may let the operating system use a less restrictive policy.
Choosing hardware for local AI without misleading comparisons
When buying or configuring a laptop for local AI, evaluate the workload rather than a single “AI PC” label. Check whether the exact application supports the NPU, the model’s memory requirement, the amount of system RAM, cooling capacity, storage space, operating-system and regional compatibility, and how the laptop behaves on battery under your own tasks.

Common mistakes when interpreting battery drain
- Assuming every AI request is local. Some systems route complex requests to a cloud service, while others use a mixture of local and remote processing.
- Turning a vendor design claim into a benchmark. “Low latency” or “energy efficient” describes intended design; it is not a measured comparison across laptops.
- Using an iPhone instruction on a Mac or Windows laptop. Apple’s battery-activity documentation for iPhone lists foreground and background use, but the exact screens and labels are not laptop directions.
- Blaming the model for an update-related spike. Background indexing or optimization can temporarily increase heat and battery use.
- Ignoring battery health. A degraded battery can make normal workloads look unusually demanding because its remaining capacity is lower.
When the behavior needs service rather than tuning
Stop troubleshooting the AI feature as the primary cause if the laptop overheats during ordinary work, shuts down unexpectedly, reports a battery service warning, shows swelling or cannot hold charge when idle. Those symptoms indicate a hardware, battery or cooling problem that power-mode changes cannot safely repair. Back up important data and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
The practical answer
Local AI can feel slow or reduce battery life because your laptop is performing computation that would otherwise happen elsewhere, and the cost depends on the model, hardware, power policy, temperature and competing workloads. There is no defensible one-size-fits-all battery percentage. Identify the exact feature, verify whether it is documented as on-device, reproduce one controlled task, compare battery and plugged-in behavior, inspect resource and thermal activity, allow post-update background work to finish, and check battery health separately. On supported Macs, Low Power Mode favors runtime while High Power Mode favors sustained performance with more fan activity; neither is an AI-specific cure.
