LLM agent bills spike when the system performs more paid work than your headline answer suggests. A single user request can trigger several model calls, long context replays, reasoning tokens, retries, subagent handoffs, tool charges, and sandbox compute. The reliable diagnosis is to start with aggregate provider usage data, locate the affected project or workflow, then follow the most expensive runs through detailed traces. Fix one measured driver at a time and compare representative runs for total cost, latency, and task quality.
What actually makes an agent run expensive?
Agent cost is the sum of every billable operation involved in completing a task, not merely the final response shown to a user. OpenAI’s agent observability guidance states: “An agent may make several model calls while completing a task.” Each call can have its own input, cached input, output, and reasoning usage. The run may also invoke paid tools, delegate to subagents, retry failed work, or consume sandbox resources.

More model calls
The most common hidden multiplier is call count. A planner call, a tool-selection call, a result-evaluation call, and a final-answer call are four model requests even if the user sees one response. Handoffs between specialist agents add calls as well. Count successful and unsuccessful attempts; a failed request can still consume tokens.

Input tokens include system instructions, tool definitions, conversation history, retrieved documents, and tool results sent back to the model. An agent that preserves session history may feed earlier turns into later requests. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation notes that retained history can therefore increase input-token counts on subsequent runs. A short final answer does not offset a large prompt.

Output and reasoning tokens
Generated text, hidden reasoning, structured tool arguments, and other output all affect usage according to the provider and endpoint. OpenAI explicitly says, “Reasoning tokens are billed as output tokens.” A concise visible answer may follow extensive internal reasoning, so output length alone is an unreliable cost proxy.
Retries and recovery work
Timeouts, rate limits, malformed tool arguments, validation failures, and application-level retry policies can repeat an otherwise expensive call. Exponential backoff changes latency, not the number of billed attempts. Inspect retry counts and the exact error that triggered each retry before calling the behavior a loop.
Tool, subagent, and compute charges
Search, code execution, databases, browsers, hosted functions, and third-party APIs can have their own prices. A subagent may make several additional model calls. Sandboxed code may consume metered CPU, memory, storage, or execution time. Include these non-model charges when reconciling the provider invoice with application totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCache behavior
Prompt caching can reduce the price of eligible repeated prefixes, but only when the provider’s matching and lifetime rules are met. A changing system prompt, tool list, tool order, or earlier prefix can cause a miss. Cache writes may cost more than ordinary input, while cache reads may use a separate lower rate. The correct question is not “Is caching enabled?” but “Which requests read or write cache tokens, at what rate, and what is the resulting total cost?”
Read usage data before changing the agent
Separate API usage from the final invoice. Subscription commitments, scale tiers, regional pricing, taxes, credits, and third-party charges can make a bill differ from raw token multiplication. Keep the provider and model attached to every usage record so the correct rate is applied; token fields and names differ by endpoint.

| Dimension | What to compare | What a change can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Requests, tokens, retries, and cost by minute, hour, and day | A deployment, traffic surge, or scheduled job may align with the spike |
| Project or organization | Usage grouped by project, API key, or environment | One application or staging job may be responsible |
| User or customer | Runs and tokens by tenant, account, or internal user | A single workload or abusive integration may dominate |
| Workflow and agent | Run count, call count, input, output, and tool activity | A prompt, routing rule, or agent version may have changed |
| Model | Model-specific input, cached input, output, and reasoning usage | Traffic may have moved to a more expensive model |
| Execution | Retries, handoffs, subagent calls, tools, and failures | Recovery behavior or orchestration may be multiplying work |
A repeatable diagnostic workflow
1. Confirm the time window and scope
- Choose the exact interval in which the invoice or internal alert rose. Record the organization, project, environment, and currency.
- Align provider dashboard timestamps with application logs. OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard reports in UTC; its one-minute interval view is for usage data such as token throughput, not billing data.
- Check that the dashboard filters include every relevant project and model. A missing project can make an application log appear inconsistent with provider totals.
- Write down any mismatch between the dashboard’s usage window and the invoice or run window. Do not treat non-overlapping totals as a failed reconciliation.
2. Establish a representative baseline
Select a normal period with comparable traffic, model mix, and task types. Compare request count, input tokens, cached input, cache writes, output tokens, reasoning tokens, retry count, tool calls, and total cost. A rise in requests points to traffic or scheduling; a rise in tokens per request points to context, output, or reasoning changes.
Keep endpoint-specific field names intact. OpenAI documents different usage structures for Chat Completions and Responses, and other providers expose different names again. Normalize data for analysis only after retaining the original record and model identifier.
3. Find the changed dimension
Break the affected period down by project, user, workflow, agent version, model, and short time interval. Look for a step change after a deployment, a gradual increase as sessions grow, or a narrow concentration in one customer or job.
- Request count up, tokens per request stable: investigate traffic, duplicate submissions, polling, scheduled jobs, and client retries.
- Input tokens up: inspect history retention, retrieval payloads, tool definitions, and oversized tool results.
- Output or reasoning tokens up: inspect model choice, reasoning settings, verbosity, and tasks that now require more planning.
- Retries up: inspect timeouts, rate-limit responses, schema validation, and retry limits.
- Cached tokens down or cache writes up: inspect prefix stability, cache lifetime, and model-specific eligibility.
- Tool activity up: inspect tool selection, pagination, repeated calls, and the size of returned data.
4. Follow an expensive run through its trace
Rank runs by total cost or token usage, then open the highest-cost examples. A useful trace shows timestamps, model and provider, request and response usage, parent and child calls, tool arguments and results, retries, errors, handoffs, and session identifiers.
Look for repeated model calls with nearly identical inputs, a growing message history, the same tool invoked after an unchanged failure, a handoff chain that never resolves, or a large result copied into every subsequent prompt. LangSmith describes trace and dashboard views that expose token usage, latency, error rates, and cost breakdowns, with integrations for multiple SDKs and OpenTelemetry. Treat that as a capability description, not a guarantee of performance or a requirement to adopt the service.

Do not label a workflow a loop solely because it is expensive. Demonstrate repetition in the trace: a high call count, a retry sequence, repeated tool steps, or back-and-forth handoffs. One large but intentional retrieval or coding task may be costly without being stuck.

5. Account for session history and context growth
Compare prompt size at the first and last calls in a run and across successive sessions. Check whether the application resends all prior turns, tool schemas, retrieved files, and raw tool output. Preserve only the history needed for the current task, summarize older turns where quality permits, and truncate irrelevant tool output before it reaches the model.
Measure these changes rather than assuming a shorter prompt is better. Removing context can lower cost while increasing tool calls, corrections, or failed answers, which may raise the total run cost.
6. Inspect cache diagnostics
For cache-eligible workloads, record cache-read tokens, cache-write tokens, uncached input, and total cost for each request. Verify that the reusable prefix is byte-for-byte stable where the provider requires it. OpenAI’s current cache guidance identifies changes to tools and their ordering as cache-sensitive differences; stable reusable prefixes can improve reuse subject to model-specific behavior.
Anthropic’s 2026 pricing documentation distinguishes cache writes from cache reads. Its documented default examples list a five-minute cache write at 1.25 times the base input price, a one-hour cache write at 2 times, and a cache read at 0.1 times the base input price. The same page lists cache-read multipliers of 0.025 times for Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, and 0.05 times for Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5. These are provider-published examples accessed on October 13, 2026, not universal rates; verify current model and region pricing before using them.

7. Test one targeted change
- Choose the strongest measured driver, such as an unlimited retry policy or an oversized tool response.
- Change one variable where practical: cap calls or retries, trim tool output, remove irrelevant history, stabilize a cacheable prefix, route simple tasks to an appropriate lower-cost model, or stop after a repeated tool failure.
- Replay representative workloads, not just the cheapest test case.
- Compare total cost, input and output tokens, cached and cache-write tokens, latency, success rate, correction rate, and task quality.
- Keep the change only if it improves the required quality and reliability at an acceptable cost.
OpenAI’s cache-diagnostics guidance recommends sending representative requests after a change and comparing cached tokens, cache-write tokens, and total cost across several requests. One unusually cheap run can be a cache warm-up artifact or an atypical task.

Use the least complex tool that can answer the current question, then add detail when aggregate data stops being conclusive.
| Method | Best for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Provider usage dashboard | Finding when usage changed and which project or model is involved | Usually cannot explain a particular agent step or tool cycle |
| Per-request usage records | Reconciling input, cached input, output, and reasoning fields | May lack parent-child execution context |
| Run-level instrumentation | Aggregating all model calls, retries, tools, and subagents for one task | Requires consistent run and correlation identifiers |
| Span-level tracing | Finding the exact handoff, tool result, retry, or prompt that added cost | Records sensitive prompts and needs retention and access controls |
| External observability platform | Dashboards across SDKs, providers, latency, errors, and cost | Requires integration, current pricing metadata, and policy review |
LangSmith’s documentation describes cost calculation based on token usage paired with provider, model, and applicable pricing, and trace views for token usage, latency, errors, and cost. Before adopting any platform, confirm current SDK support, OpenTelemetry behavior, retention, regional processing, redaction, role-based access, and whether historical rates can be preserved for invoice reconciliation.
Common spike patterns and their fixes
A prompt change doubled input usage
Compare the serialized system prompt, tool definitions, and retrieved context before and after deployment. If a large policy or schema was inserted into every turn, move stable material into a cacheable prefix where supported, remove unused definitions, or send only the tools relevant to the current phase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A tool returns too much data
Measure result size and downstream prompt size. Add server-side filtering, pagination, field selection, summaries, or a maximum result limit. Preserve identifiers so the agent can request details deliberately instead of receiving an entire dataset repeatedly.
Best Value
Retries hide behind a successful answer
Inspect all attempts, not only the final successful span. Set bounded retries with reason-specific policies: a transient rate limit may merit backoff, while a deterministic schema error needs correction or termination. Log the error class and attempt number.
A handoff chain keeps growing
Record parent and child agent IDs and the handoff reason. Add explicit completion criteria, a maximum delegation depth, and a shared budget. Return control to the parent when a specialist cannot make progress rather than handing the same task to another specialist.
Cache reads disappeared
Compare prefixes, tool ordering, model names, cache lifetime, and request spacing. A small dynamic value placed before a large stable prefix can invalidate reuse. Restructure the prompt so dynamic instructions follow the reusable section when the provider’s rules permit it.

A cheaper model increased total cost
Calculate cost per completed task, not cost per call. A lower-priced model that needs more retries, tool calls, or human correction may be more expensive overall. Compare quality and latency alongside token price.
Operational safeguards that prevent surprises
- Assign every user request a run ID and propagate it through model calls, tools, retries, and subagents.
- Store provider, model, endpoint, token categories, cache fields, latency, status, and cost-rate version with each request.
- Set per-run limits for model calls, retries, delegation depth, tool executions, and wall-clock time.
- Alert on both absolute spend and changes in cost per successful task.
- Keep separate budgets for production, staging, tests, and scheduled batch jobs.
- Sample or redact prompt and tool payloads according to privacy requirements while retaining enough metadata to diagnose repetition.
- Review provider pricing and cache documentation whenever a model or region changes.
A concise incident runbook
- Freeze the affected deployment or reduce traffic only if the spend rate threatens the budget.
- Confirm the UTC window, organization, projects, models, and invoice scope.
- Compare request count and every token category with a representative baseline.
- Rank runs by cost and inspect traces for calls, retries, handoffs, context growth, tools, and cache behavior.
- Identify one evidence-backed driver and apply a bounded change.
- Replay representative workloads and record cost, latency, quality, failures, and cache metrics.
- Document the cause, affected version, measured impact, and a monitor that will detect recurrence.
What to remember when the next bill jumps
The visible answer is only the endpoint of an agent workflow. Diagnose the complete execution: every model call, token category, retry, handoff, subagent, tool, cache operation, and compute charge. Aggregate dashboards tell you when and where the increase occurred; run traces tell you why. A fix is credible only after representative workloads show lower total cost without unacceptable losses in quality, reliability, or latency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I estimate an agent bill from the final answer length?
No. Input, cached input, output, and reasoning tokens can all contribute, and reasoning tokens may be billed as output. Count every model call in the run and include retries, tools, subagents, and compute.
Does a high-cost run prove the agent is stuck in a loop?
No. Use a trace to show repeated calls, retries, tool steps, or handoffs. A deliberate task with large context or extensive reasoning can be expensive without looping.
Why did caching fail after I enabled it?
Cache reuse generally requires an eligible matching prefix and provider-specific lifetime rules. Changes to prompts, tools, tool order, model, or request timing can produce misses. Check cache-read and cache-write fields rather than assuming caching reduced cost.
