Links normally open in the browser your operating system has selected as its default. If every app sends links to the unexpected browser, correct that system setting. If only one app does it, inspect that app’s own link-opening preference. On Windows, also check individual web-link associations. On iPhone, an app associated with a web address can open through Universal Links even when the browser default is correct.
What “default browser” actually controls
Your default browser is the application the operating system uses when another application asks it to open an ordinary web address. Installing several browsers does not prevent you from choosing one as the default. Email, messaging, document, calendar and other applications generally hand an HTTP or HTTPS link to the operating system, which then routes it to that browser.

That system rule is only one part of the process. A source application can override it with its own setting, Windows can store separate associations for web-related file and link types, and iPhone can hand a web address to an installed app through Universal Links. The right fix therefore depends on whether the behavior is system-wide, limited to one app, or caused by an associated mobile app.

- Every app opens the same unexpected browser: the operating system’s default browser or its web associations are probably responsible.
- Only one app opens a different browser: look for that app’s link-routing preference.
- Only certain iPhone websites open an installed app: the site may be using a Universal Link rather than the browser-default route.
- The behavior occurs only in a work or school account: an administrator may be enforcing the app’s preference.
Also note the platform and software version before following a menu path. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android expose similar choices in different places, and Android manufacturers can rename or move the relevant setting.
Fix the default browser on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Windows allows defaults to be assigned from an application page or individually by file type and link type. If selecting a browser appears not to stick, inspect the web associations as well as the browser selection.
Set a browser from Default apps
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search field to find the browser you want to use.
- Open that browser’s defaults page and choose the option to make it the default where Windows presents it.
- Review the listed web-related file and link types. Confirm that the browser is assigned to the HTTP and HTTPS entries and to any other web association relevant to your test.
The exact presentation differs between Windows versions and configurations. Microsoft documents both application-level defaults and assignment by file type or link type, so the association list is the authoritative check when a browser choice does not affect links.

A browser can appear selected on an application page while a particular link type still points elsewhere. For example, a link opened through one protocol may follow a different association from another web link. Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps, inspect the browser’s entries, and test a normal HTTP or HTTPS link after each change.
Use the browser’s own Windows prompt when available
Some browsers provide a shortcut into Windows’ default-apps page. If the browser offers a Set default control, use it, then verify the resulting HTTP and HTTPS assignments in Windows. A prompt inside the browser is not a separate routing system; it ultimately changes Windows’ associations.
If the setting changes back
- Check the relevant HTTP and HTTPS entries again instead of relying only on the browser name shown at the top of the page.
- Repeat the test from more than one source application to distinguish a Windows issue from an app-specific override.
- If this is a managed computer, ask the organization’s administrator whether default-app policies are being applied.
- Record which link type fails. A problem with one association is narrower than a problem affecting all web links.
Fix the default browser on macOS
Apple moved the setting in macOS Ventura 13. The correct path depends on whether the Mac runs Ventura or a later release, or an older version of macOS.
macOS Ventura 13 and later
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Find Default web browser and select the browser you want.
Close and reopen the source application before testing another link if it was already running when you changed the setting. Test links from at least two applications so you can tell whether the system-wide choice took effect.
Earlier macOS releases
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
- Select General.
- Use Default web browser to choose the browser.
Do not follow the Ventura path on an older release: older versions use System Preferences and place the control under General.
Fix the default browser on iPhone
On a current iPhone, the browser choice is in the Default Apps section of Settings. The alternative browser must support Apple’s default-browser feature; an installed browser that does not support it cannot be selected for this purpose.

After changing the choice, test a plain web link from an email or message. If it opens an installed app instead of the selected browser, the default setting may be working normally and the link may be an associated Universal Link.
Understand Universal Links on iPhone
Universal Links are a separate mechanism from the default-browser setting. iOS can recognize that a web address is associated with an installed app and open that app directly. This can happen even when another browser is correctly selected as the default for ordinary HTTP or HTTPS links.
How to tell which mechanism is involved
- Try a different, ordinary web address. If it opens in your selected browser, the browser default is likely correct.
- Compare the behavior of the same domain in Safari or another browser with the behavior when tapping the link in the source app.
- Notice whether the destination is a service for which you have an installed app. A handoff to that app points toward an associated-link behavior rather than a broken browser preference.
Changing the browser default does not necessarily disable an app’s association with its web addresses. Treat Universal Links as a link-target decision made by iOS, not as evidence that the browser setting failed.
Set the browser on Android
Google’s Android help directs users to choose the browser used as the default in the device’s Settings so tapped links open there. Android menu names and paths vary by manufacturer and software version, so there is no single sequence that applies to every phone.
Open the device’s Settings and search for default browser, browser app or default apps. Choose the browser you want, then tap a link from another app to verify the result. If the search does not reveal the control, use the Settings search field rather than assuming that a menu path from another Android phone will match yours.
When only one app opens links in the wrong browser
An application can choose its own link destination instead of delegating every link to the system default. This is the most likely explanation when links from one app consistently open in a different browser while links from other apps behave correctly.

Outlook Mobile example
Outlook Mobile documents an Open Links With preference. In Outlook, open its settings and choose Settings > Open Links With. The available choices include Microsoft Edge or the system default browser.
- Open Outlook Mobile.
- Open the app’s settings.
- Tap Open Links With.
- Select System Default Browser if Outlook should follow the phone’s choice, or select the other offered option if that is what your organization requires.
- Return to a message and test a link.
This preference explains why changing the operating system’s browser may appear to do nothing inside Outlook: Outlook can continue using its own selection until you change the app-level control.
Other apps
Look in the affected app’s settings for wording such as Open Links With, Open links externally, Use in-app browser or a named browser. The label is app-specific, so the absence of one exact phrase does not prove that no routing control exists.

For Outlook Mobile, Microsoft notes that an organization administrator can manage the link-opening setting for a work or school account. In that situation, changing the preference locally may be unavailable, may be reversed, or may affect only a personal account.
Compare the behavior of a personal account and the managed account, if both are present. If only the managed account ignores your choice, contact the organization’s administrator or help desk and provide the app version, device platform and exact link behavior. Do not treat an enforced preference as a damaged browser installation.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use the following order so that each test answers a specific question instead of changing several settings at once.
- Classify the scope. Test links from two unrelated apps and from the app where the problem was first seen.
- Confirm the intended browser is installed and selectable. A browser cannot be used as the default if the platform does not list it as a supported choice.
- Check the operating-system default. Use the Windows, macOS, iPhone or Android procedure for the device.
- On Windows, inspect associations. Verify the HTTP and HTTPS entries and any link type implicated by the failed test.
- Re-test outside the original app. If links now open correctly elsewhere, the remaining issue is probably inside the source app.
- Inspect the source app’s link setting. Choose its system-default option or the browser you actually want.
- Check for account management. A work or school administrator may control the app preference.
- On iPhone, rule out Universal Links. Compare an associated service’s link with an ordinary web address that has no installed companion app.
- Document the result. Note the device, operating-system version, source app, link type and destination. This distinguishes a reproducible association problem from a general default-browser problem.
Common mistaken fixes and what they overlook
Changing the browser inside the browser
A browser’s own “make default” button normally opens or changes the operating system’s setting. It cannot override an app that has its own link-routing preference, and it does not remove an iPhone Universal Link association.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Changing the system default when one app is the exception
If links from every other app already use the desired browser, repeatedly changing the system default will not correct an app-level choice. Go directly to the affected app’s settings.
Assuming the browser name proves every association is correct
Windows can assign defaults by application, file type or link type. Inspect the individual web associations when one class of link behaves differently.
Assuming every iPhone link should open in a browser
An associated app can legitimately receive its web address through Universal Links. Test an ordinary address before concluding that the browser default is broken.
How to verify that the fix held
- Test at least two links from different source apps.
- On Windows, test both HTTP and HTTPS links if the issue involved associations.
- On iPhone, test an ordinary web address and a link belonging to an installed service.
- In Outlook Mobile, test the account that showed the problem, especially if it is managed by an organization.
- Record whether the link opened the selected browser, an in-app browser, or an associated app. Those are different outcomes and require different settings.
Quick decision table
| What you observe | Most likely control | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Links from every app use the same unexpected browser | Operating-system default browser | Windows Default apps, macOS Desktop & Dock or General, iPhone Default Apps, or Android device Settings |
| Only one app uses another browser | App-level link preference | The app’s settings, such as Outlook Mobile’s Open Links With |
| Only one Windows link type behaves differently | File or link association | Settings > Apps > Default apps, then the relevant web entry |
| An iPhone link opens an installed service app | Universal Link association | Test an ordinary web address to separate it from the browser default |
| A work or school account ignores your app choice | Organization-managed preference | Ask the account administrator or help desk |
When to escalate the issue
Ask for platform or app support when the documented setting is unavailable, the selected browser is not offered, a Windows association immediately changes back, or a managed account prevents a change. Include the platform, operating-system version, app name and version if known, the exact source of the link, and whether the destination was a normal web page or an associated app. That information lets support target the correct layer instead of treating every case as a generic browser problem.
