A separate account of her remarks at Salesforce Connections on June 4, 2026, does show how her business developed across press, retail, publishing and digital media—and why broader reach has not removed the need for sustained work.
What the available account does—and does not—establish
The headline frames a specific claim as something Stewart shared in an exclusive interview. The available published account is instead a report by Stuart Lauchlan for Diginomica about her remarks at Salesforce Connections on June 4, 2026. It does not verify the exclusive’s wording or explain which parts of launching a brand she believes would be easier now. The distinction matters: the career examples below provide context, not a substitute for her answer in that interview. Read Diginomica’s event report.

How Stewart described building an audience and business
Publicity before an advertising budget
In the event remarks reported by Diginomica, Stewart recalled that newspaper coverage followed the launch of her catering business, first locally and then in The New York Times and People. She said she had no advertising budget at the outset and relied on press coverage. That account points to an early route to visibility, but it does not establish that the same path—or its reach and cost—would work for a new business today.

Stewart said she became a home-style expert and advisor to Kmart in the 1980s, working on sheets and towels. As reported by Diginomica, she recalled that the business exceeded $1 billion within two years and later reached almost $2 billion annually. Those are her recollected figures in an event report, not independently verified company statistics.

Publishing and the shift to digital
Stewart recalled that her magazine was designed on a Mac, saying, “When we started my magazine, we were the first, other than Wired, to design our magazine on a Mac.” She also described moving toward digital publishing as print advertising declined. In her account, first-year digital readership was about five percent, below her expectation of one-third: “I thought we’d maybe be a third digital [readership] in the first year. Nope, we were like five percent.” These figures are her reported recollection, not an independent audience measurement or an industry-wide benchmark.
Her current product business, in context
Stewart’s official blog introduced a 16-appliance Kitchen Electrics Collection in April 2026, describing five neutral colors and saying the collection would be exclusive to Amazon stores for the coming months. The post lists products including a countertop blender, French-door air-fryer toaster oven, waffle maker, slow cooker, rice cooker and stand mixer. It describes the blender as having six stainless-steel blades, a selector dial, a large pitcher and dishwasher-safe parts; the Rotating Waffle Maker has a 180-degree flip iron and an overflow tray. These are examples of her current product activity, not evidence about the conditions of her original launch. Availability, models and exclusivity can change. See Stewart’s collection announcement.

What remains difficult, even with new channels
Stewart’s event remarks do not provide a measured comparison of launch costs, speed, customer acquisition or odds of success across eras. They do offer a useful counterweight to any assumption that more ways to publish or sell make a business effortless. “It’s 12 hours, 20 hours a day, of work, it’s not a rocket ship. It’s a big slog, and, and yet, I like slogging,” she said, as reported by Diginomica.

- This best-selling cookbook originally inspired Martha Stewart's beloved PBS series of the same name and includes some of the recipes the show featured in its first seasons.
She also described “Need and want” as a constant in how she selects products and ideas. Taken together, her recollections emphasize audience attention, product choices, changing technology and persistence. They do not establish which specific modern tools or advantages she cited in the exclusive interview, or whether she meant that launching would be easier in every respect.
