Memory, SSDs, CPUs, manufacturing capacity, existing inventory, competition and retailer pricing all interact. The most reliable buying decision comes from checking the exact configuration, delivered price, stock status and return terms at the time you purchase—not from assuming a market forecast applies to one listing.
What determines a laptop’s price?
A notebook is a bundle of costly inputs: processor, DRAM memory, SSD storage, display, motherboard, battery, chassis, wireless hardware, operating system, assembly, shipping, support and warranty service. A change in any major input can alter the manufacturer’s cost. The final price also reflects how much of that change the brand, distributor and retailer choose to absorb.

That is why two laptops with similar screen sizes can have very different prices. One may use a newer processor, twice the memory, a larger SSD, a brighter display or a stronger cooling system. During a supply squeeze, a lower headline price can also reflect a lower specification rather than a bargain.
Memory and SSD costs can move the whole price equation
DRAM (system memory)
DRAM is the working memory used by the operating system and applications. TrendForce’s March 2026 notebook analysis said memory supply had tightened from the start of 2026. In its modeled first-quarter scenario, DRAM and SSDs rose from roughly 15% of a notebook’s bill-of-materials cost under normal conditions to more than 30%. Those are TrendForce estimates for its model and period, not a measurement that applies identically to every laptop.

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
Because memory is installed in every configuration, a broad DRAM increase can affect entry-level, mainstream and premium systems at the same time. The effect will still differ by model: a machine with 32 GB starts with more memory exposure than one with 8 GB, and a design with soldered memory may require a completely different board configuration.
NAND flash and SSD storage
SSDs use NAND flash to retain data when the laptop is turned off. A higher-capacity drive contains more flash, so storage costs can have a larger effect on a 1 TB model than on a 256 GB model. Buyers comparing prices should match capacity and drive type before concluding that one seller is cheaper.
TrendForce’s March scenario grouped DRAM and SSD costs together and modeled their share rising above 30% of notebook bill-of-materials cost. The figure describes component cost pressure, not a guaranteed retail increase. A company can change the included capacity, absorb part of the increase or sell older stock before changing the ticket price.

CPU prices and platform supply create uneven shortages
Processors are another major input, and availability is often platform-specific. TrendForce reported in March 2026 that prices increased for certain Intel entry-level and older-generation notebook CPUs. It also described tighter availability for some lower-end platforms and possible shortages in parts of the entry-level AMD platform market.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
That does not mean every CPU was unavailable. A manufacturer may have plenty of one processor family while delaying a particular low-cost configuration. When a platform is constrained, the symptoms can include fewer choices, a substituted processor, longer lead times or a model being offered only in selected regions.
TrendForce’s September 4, 2026 outlook said CPU supply had markedly improved since the second quarter of 2026, allowing brands to gradually normalize procurement and manufacturing. Memory costs were still rising in that update. A shortage claim therefore needs a date and a component: “CPU supply improved” and “memory remains expensive” can both be true.
Why factories and technology transitions matter
Manufacturers cannot instantly add semiconductor capacity. HP explains that an advanced fabrication facility can cost between $10 billion and $20 billion and take three to five years from groundbreaking to production. That is broad manufacturing context, not a promise that a laptop shortage will last for that long.

Transport and assembly capacity matter as well. If components arrive late, a finished laptop can miss a production window even when the factory itself has room. Shipments may then move from one quarter to the next rather than vanish permanently.
Why a component increase does not produce an identical retail increase
Retail pricing is a chain of decisions rather than a simple addition of parts. Brands can accept lower margins, distributors can negotiate different terms, retailers can discount existing stock, or a manufacturer can alter the specification. Competition also limits how quickly a seller can pass on a cost increase.
TrendForce’s September 2026 analysis said advance procurement and lower-cost inventory had cushioned some pressure. That buffer declines as the older stock is sold and replaced with units built from more expensive components. Two identical-looking listings can therefore have different prices if one was sourced earlier.

In a separate benchmark, TrendForce said CPU, DRAM and SSD represented about 45% of total system bill-of-materials cost and had risen to 68% by the third quarter of 2026. It also modeled that a comparable product from the first quarter of 2025 would need an approximately 80% price increase by the third quarter of 2026 to maintain the earlier gross margin. That 80% figure is a margin-maintenance calculation, not a forecast that shops would charge 80% more.
How a shortage changes what shoppers see
- Fewer configurations: a popular memory, storage or processor combination may disappear while other versions remain.
- Longer fulfillment: a listing may accept an order but show a delayed delivery date while the seller waits for components or finished units.
- Substitutions: a seller may offer a different processor, SSD capacity or display specification at a new price.
- Uneven regional effects: allocation and logistics can make a model available in one country but absent in another.
- Quarter-to-quarter shipment shifts: delayed production can move units between reporting periods without proving a permanent stockout.
TrendForce and Gartner forecasts do not verify live inventory at a particular retailer or the stock status of a specific laptop. Treat a product page’s current configuration, seller, location and delivery estimate as the evidence for your purchase.
What the major 2026 forecasts actually say
| Source and date | Forecast or estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, March 2026 | Memory and SSD share modeled above 30% of notebook bill-of-materials cost, versus roughly 15% normally; a US$900 mainstream model could see a total increase approaching 40% when CPU and memory costs rise. | A dated scenario with margin assumptions, not a universal observed retail change. |
| TrendForce, September 4, 2026 | CPU supply improved from 2Q26; memory costs continued to rise; global notebook shipments forecast to fall 9.4% year over year in 2026. | A global notebook forecast, not a country-specific stock report or final result. |
| Gartner, February 26, 2026 | Combined DRAM and SSD prices forecast to rise 130% by the end of 2026 versus 2025; PC prices forecast to rise 17%; worldwide PC shipments forecast to fall 10.4%. | A separate global PC forecast with different assumptions from TrendForce’s notebook models. |
| HP, 2026 | Advanced fabrication facilities described as costing $10 billion–$20 billion and taking three to five years from groundbreaking to production. | General manufacturing context, not a laptop-specific supply-duration prediction. |
Gartner Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a future-facing Gartner forecast, not a statement that every sub-$500 laptop has already disappeared. Atwal also said higher prices would narrow device choice and encourage owners to keep devices longer; this describes Gartner’s forecast rather than a confirmed outcome.

Buy now when the need is immediate
- Your current laptop is failing, unsafe, unsupported or preventing work or study.
- You have found the exact processor, memory, storage and display configuration your workload requires at a price you can afford.
- The listing is genuinely in stock, has a clear delivery date and offers acceptable returns and warranty coverage.
Wait when your current laptop is adequate
- You are shopping for a discretionary upgrade rather than replacing a failing machine.
- The only available choices compromise on the specifications you need or have unusually long delivery estimates.
- You can monitor prices and stock without risking a deadline, such as a new job or school term.
Waiting is not a promise of lower prices: component costs, exchange rates, demand and retailer strategy can move in either direction. Buying immediately is not a guarantee of avoiding a future discount. Recheck the exact listing at the point of decision.
How to compare laptops during volatile pricing
- Normalize the configuration. Match processor class, RAM capacity, SSD capacity, display resolution and refresh rate, operating system and included accessories.
- Calculate the delivered total. Include shipping, taxes or duties shown for your location and any required upgrades.
- Verify fulfillment. Confirm that the exact configuration—not merely the product family—is in stock, and record the stated delivery date.
- Check the seller and terms. Read the warranty length, return window, restocking conditions, seller identity and refurbished or open-box status.
- Match specifications to the workload. Pay for capacity that improves your work, not for a higher tier that will remain unused.
- Save the listing details. Prices and availability can change; keep the model number and specification sheet so that a later comparison remains like-for-like.
| Workload | Priorities to compare | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Web, office and video calls | Comfortable keyboard, sufficient RAM, SSD capacity, battery and webcam quality. | Paying for a high-end graphics processor that everyday applications do not use. |
| Gaming | Dedicated graphics performance, cooling, display refresh rate, RAM and upgradeability. | Comparing CPU names while ignoring the graphics processor and thermal design. |
| Creative production | Processor performance, GPU acceleration, memory capacity, fast and large storage, color-accurate display. | Choosing the cheapest model with a large screen but inadequate memory or storage. |
| Software development | Processor cores, memory headroom, SSD speed and capacity, ports and support for required tools or virtual machines. | Assuming a low price is meaningful without checking the exact operating-system edition and memory. |
Is a refurbished laptop a sensible alternative?
Refurbished or second-hand equipment can reduce the upfront cost when new models are expensive, but the sources here do not establish current laptop-specific refurbished demand or endorse a particular used model. Inspect the battery health, warranty, return period, physical condition, charger, operating-system support and repair history. Confirm that the model’s memory and SSD can meet your needs before buying.
Do not assume an upgrade is possible. Laptop RAM may be soldered, and storage or memory compatibility varies by exact model. Check the manufacturer’s service manual and the part specifications before purchasing an upgrade.
What to do when the laptop you want is unavailable
- Search the same model number with a different memory or SSD configuration, then compare the full specifications.
- Check another authorized seller or the manufacturer’s store in your region, while confirming warranty coverage.
- Look for a current-generation alternative with the same workload requirements rather than choosing by brand name alone.
- Ask whether the delivery date is an estimate or a confirmed allocation; do not treat an order acceptance as proof of immediate stock.
- If you can wait, set a price and availability check and revisit the exact listing later.
A shortage is a reason to broaden equivalent configurations carefully, not to abandon the specifications your work requires. Keep the comparison anchored to performance, memory, storage, display, support and total cost.
