Shoebridge did not explicitly label Jewish people “good” or “bad,” Burns acknowledged, but Burns said the answer risked isolating some community members.
What did Shoebridge say?
The exchange followed Shoebridge’s selection as Greens leader on 30 September 2026. Asked whether he would “mend the bridges” between the party and the local Jewish community, he rejected the premise that the relationship needed repair.
Shoebridge said the Greens had “really strong connections” with “much of the Australian Jewish community,” particularly people he described as opposing genocide and speaking for values the party shared. He said the party would champion their voices and urged the media: “Listen to their cries for justice like we do.” These remarks were reported by ABC News on 1 October 2026.
Why did Josh Burns call the answer prejudiced?
Burns, the Labor MP for Macnamara, said it was “pretty shocking” for Shoebridge to frame the Greens’ connection with Jewish Australians around those who agreed with his perspective on the Middle East. Burns argued the answer should have affirmed that all Jewish Australians deserve to feel safe and included in political life, regardless of their views on the conflict.

“The Jewish community should not be put into categories of good and bad based on their views on what is happening in the Middle East; that is not progressive leadership,” Burns said. He described Shoebridge’s approach as “prejudice.”
Burns also acknowledged that Shoebridge had not explicitly called Jewish people “good” or “bad.” His criticism was that the emphasis on one part of the community could imply that those with different views were outside the relationship the Greens valued. Burns said he hoped to have a constructive relationship with the new leadership team.

How did Shoebridge’s spokesperson respond?
A spokesperson for Shoebridge said the question came from a News Corp journalist who did not publish it. The spokesperson defended the focus on progressive Jewish voices, saying: “Members of the progressive Jewish community consistently tell us their opposition to genocide and their deep cultural history of humanism and peace is being deliberately ignored by journalists.”
The disagreement is about both the words Shoebridge used and what they conveyed. His spokesperson presented the remarks as recognition of Jewish Australians whose views and traditions the spokesperson said were overlooked. Burns argued that emphasizing those who shared Shoebridge’s position was not an inclusive answer to a question about the relationship with the wider community.

What was the political context?
Shoebridge became leader after Larissa Waters resigned because of illness. In a rare contested ballot, he defeated Sarah Hanson-Young and Mehreen Faruqi; ABC News reported that Shoebridge received seven votes to Faruqi’s four. Steph Hodgins-May was elected deputy leader. Faruqi said she was disappointed that party members did not choose the leadership. ABC News reported the leadership result on 30 September 2026.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he looked forward to constructive engagement with the new Greens team, while criticizing the party’s focus on replacing Labor and saying the threat from One Nation deserved attention. Shoebridge blamed Labor for One Nation’s rise and said the Greens could counter Pauline Hanson. These are competing political claims, not established explanations or forecasts.

What the “prejudiced” charge does—and does not—mean
“Prejudiced” was Burns’s assessment of Shoebridge’s answer, not Shoebridge’s own description and not an explicit statement by Shoebridge that Jewish people belong in “good” or “bad” categories. Burns’s argument was that the answer singled out Jewish Australians who opposed genocide and shared the Greens’ values, without addressing whether those who disagreed with Shoebridge’s views were equally included.
Shoebridge’s spokesperson, in turn, defended drawing attention to progressive Jewish voices and said they were being marginalized. The exchange therefore concerned how a political leader should speak about a diverse community: whether to emphasize allies whose views align with the party, or to make an unqualified assurance of inclusion across differences of opinion.
