In a brief July 2024 Google Trends comparison, searches for “JD Vance couch” overtook searches for “Trump shooting” by July 23, according to Futurism. That was a time-bound crossover in relative search interest—not a tally of exact searches, a judgment about the events’ importance, or evidence that the couch phrase stayed ahead.
What did the Google search comparison show?
Futurism reported on July 26, 2024, that Google Trends showed the phrase “JD Vance couch” overtaking “Trump shooting” by July 23. Its account described a seven-day snapshot and noted that a longer date range changed the picture. The result therefore depends on the period and the exact phrases being compared; it should not be read as a general ranking that holds across all dates.

Google Trends comparisons show relative interest rather than publishing exact query totals in this reporting. The headline captures a moment in online attention, not a lasting shift in what people searched for.

The phrase referred to a false rumor about J. D. Vance’s 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. A social media user posted the joke on July 15, 2024, shortly after Donald Trump announced Vance as his running mate. The post falsely presented the claim as something Vance had written about in the book. Contemporary coverage traced the meme’s spread and explained that the story was not an event described in the memoir; see NDTV’s account.

The rumor’s popularity as a search phrase is evidence that the joke circulated—not that the underlying claim was true. The distinction matters because search interest measures attention to words and topics, not whether the claims behind them are accurate.
What happened with the Associated Press fact-check?
The Associated Press published and later deleted a fact-check article about the rumor on July 25, 2024, according to contemporary reporting. The deletion became part of the online conversation, but it does not confirm the rumor. A removed article is not evidence that its subject occurred, and the couch story remains a false claim about Hillbilly Elegy. The Daily Dot also covered the deletion and the meme’s circulation in its report on the jokes.

How does this fit with broader 2024 search trends?
Google’s 2024 U.S. Year in Search listed Vance as the third-trending person and Trump as the second-trending search. Those are separate year-end rankings, not a confirmation or extension of the short July comparison: they use different categories and a much wider time frame.
The two measures answer different questions. Futurism’s report concerned a short-lived comparison between two specific phrases. Google’s year-end recap placed people and searches in broader trending lists. Neither ranking indicates that one topic mattered more than the other.

What the headline does—and does not—mean
- It means: Futurism reported that “JD Vance couch” had higher relative search interest than “Trump shooting” by July 23, 2024, within the comparison window it described.
- It does not mean: Google disclosed exact search counts for the phrases, that the couch query led across every time range, or that the meme was more significant than the July 13 shooting at Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The meme continued to draw public jokes after the crossover. On August 6, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made a “get off the couch” joke about Vance during a Philadelphia speech, as The Daily Dot reported. That later reference shows the meme remained in circulation; it does not establish that its search interest stayed above the phrase “Trump shooting.”
