It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown does not objectively outrank A Charlie Brown Christmas. But it has one clear advantage: Halloween is built into nearly every part of its story, from costumes and trick-or-treating to Linus’s pumpkin-patch vigil. That concentrated seasonal identity makes it the more distinctly Halloween special.
Where to watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in 2026
In the United States, Apple announced a free streaming window for nonsubscribers on October 17–18, 2026. The date range is specific to this year; the free windows change from year to year. Apple TV subscribers can watch the Peanuts specials through Apple TV, while Lee Mendelson Film Productions says nonsubscribers can also watch during limited free windows on certain dates. What gives the Halloween special its distinctive edge
Halloween is the story’s setting and its engine
The special moves through recognizably Halloween activities: Charlie Brown attends a party, the children go trick-or-treating, and Linus waits in a pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin. Halloween is not merely the backdrop for a separate lesson; its rituals shape what the characters do and what Linus believes.
#1 Best Overall
Linus’s vigil gives the holiday a childlike mythology
Linus’s faith in the Great Pumpkin gives the special a seasonal legend of its own. He waits earnestly for an imaginary visitor, while Snoopy’s Red Baron fantasy adds another layer of playful make-believe. Together, the pumpkin-patch vigil and Snoopy’s aerial adventure make the Halloween world feel specific to this story.
The Christmas special has a different center
A Charlie Brown Christmas focuses on Charlie Brown’s unhappiness with commercialism and his effort to direct a holiday play. Its unexpected tree and Linus’s lesson turn the story toward meaning and belonging. The Peanuts specials share familiar characters and Vince Guaraldi’s music, but their story engines differ: Halloween rituals and belief drive Great Pumpkin, while the Christmas special centers on a play and Charlie Brown’s search for purpose.

Is it actually better than A Charlie Brown Christmas?
That depends on what a viewer wants from a holiday special. If the measure is how completely the setting, activities, and fantasy are tied to one holiday, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown has a persuasive case. That is a comparison of seasonal focus, not proof that it is universally better. The available evidence does not establish a reliable head-to-head verdict from audiences, critics, or ratings.
Why the viewing dates are worth checking each year
The specials’ streaming home does not mean their free dates stay the same. Apple’s 2025 announcement listed that year’s windows for Great Pumpkin, the Thanksgiving special, and the Christmas special; those dates are historical, not a schedule to reuse. For 2026, Apple announced October 17–18 as the US free window for Great Pumpkin. Check the local Apple TV listing for current availability, particularly outside the United States.
