Why IT, FMCG and banking stocks can fall together—and what it means for investors

IT, FMCG and banking shares can decline at the same time because a market-wide shock—such as foreign-portfolio selling, a repricing of expensive shares, geopolitical uncertainty or weaker earnings expectations—can overwhelm the differences between their businesses. The common fall shows that the portfolio is exposed to shared equity-market risk; it does not prove that all three sectors have identical fundamentals or that a recovery is imminent.

Use the drop as a prompt to separate the broad market force from each company’s earnings, valuation and balance-sheet outlook. Then judge any change to your holdings against your investment goal, time horizon, liquidity needs and tolerance for loss.

Why very different sectors can move down together

A common-factor shock reaches many stocks

Every listed company has its own revenue drivers, but its share price also responds to factors that affect the market as a whole. Investor risk appetite, domestic and global economic news, interest-rate expectations, geopolitical events and the availability of capital can all change the price investors are willing to pay for equities. When that common factor turns negative, IT exporters, consumer-goods companies and banks may fall together even though their operations differ.

The National Stock Exchange of India explains that diversification removes much of the noise unique to individual companies, while a factor affecting the entire market remains. Diversification therefore reduces concentration in one company or sector; it cannot eliminate a broad equity-market decline.

Portfolio flows can create simultaneous selling

Large institutional investors often adjust country or regional exposure across many holdings at once. A decision to reduce Indian equities can put selling pressure on technology, consumer and financial shares in the same session. Index funds, exchange-traded funds and risk controls can reinforce that effect because they trade baskets rather than selecting one company at a time. The result is co-movement that reflects portfolio plumbing and liquidity, not a sudden change in every business.

Valuation resets affect sectors with different profits

A market can fall because the valuation multiple investors apply to future profits contracts. If risk-free yields rise, uncertainty increases or investors demand a larger risk premium, expensive shares can lose value even when near-term earnings have not changed. A bank, an IT service provider and a packaged-food maker may therefore be repriced together. The size of the fall will still depend on each stock’s starting valuation, earnings durability and liquidity.

What the October–November 2024 correction shows

The Reserve Bank of India’s State of the Economy bulletin dated November 20, 2024 provides a dated Indian example. It described a correction driven by cumulative pressures rather than one sector-specific event.

Measure RBI finding How to read it
Sensex performance Down 8% from the end of September through November 14, 2024; it closed at 77,580 on November 14. A historical broad-market correction, not a current 2026 reading.
Foreign portfolio flows About ₹1.2 lakh crore of cumulative net FPI equity outflows from late September through November 14; RBI called this the highest in absolute terms at that point, while noting it was modest relative to total market capitalisation compared with some earlier episodes. Shows how sizeable cross-market selling can be without proving that every company’s fundamentals deteriorated.
October 2024 flows US$11.0 billion of net FPI outflows from Indian capital markets, driven mainly by equities; selling appeared widespread among emerging markets. Indicates an international allocation decision, not a diagnosis of one Indian sector.
Sectors with the largest October outflows Financial services, oil, gas and consumable fuels, and FMCG recorded the highest sectoral FPI outflows among the sectors discussed. Supports the possibility of cross-sector selling during that episode; it does not establish present performance for IT, FMCG or banking stocks.
Other pressures cited Geopolitical uncertainty, high valuations, weaker-than-expected second-quarter FY2024–25 earnings and higher October CPI inflation. Several common and sector-linked concerns operated at the same time, so no single cause should be assumed.

This example demonstrates a transmission mechanism, not a permanent relationship. It does not show that IT, FMCG and banking indices fell by the same percentage, nor does it provide a current correlation. No current 2026 sector-return or rolling-correlation figure is established here.

Different businesses still require separate analysis

IT companies

IT services businesses commonly depend on clients’ technology budgets, the global business cycle, project delays, discretionary spending and overseas revenue. A broad risk-off move can lower their valuation multiples, while a company-specific change in deal wins, utilisation, margins or client concentration can move one IT stock differently from the sector. A simultaneous fall is therefore not evidence that every IT company faces the same demand outlook.

FMCG companies

FMCG results are tied to household consumption, volume growth, pricing power, input costs, rural and urban demand and distribution. Defensive consumer brands may still decline when investors sell equities broadly or when high valuations are reset. The relevant questions are whether volumes are improving, margins can absorb commodity costs and the price already discounts optimistic growth—not simply whether the sector fell with banks.

Rank #3

Banks

Banks are assessed through credit growth, deposit funding, asset quality, capital adequacy, net interest margins and provisions. Their shares can react to economy-wide growth expectations and funding conditions, but an individual lender may have a very different exposure to unsecured credit, a particular industry or a stressed borrower. A market-wide decline should not substitute for reading the bank’s disclosures and financial statements.

How to diagnose a simultaneous decline

Use this sequence before deciding whether a holding needs action:

  1. Identify the news window. Check whether the move began after a global risk event, domestic macro release, policy announcement, earnings season or large foreign-flow reversal. A shared timestamp suggests a common catalyst, but does not prove causation.
  2. Separate market, sector and company levels. Compare the broad index with the relevant IT, FMCG and banking indices, then compare each holding with its sector. If the market and all sectors fell, start with common risk; if one stock lagged sharply, investigate company-specific information.
  3. Examine earnings and valuation. Review revenue or loan growth, margins, asset quality, cash generation and management guidance. Compare the current valuation with the company’s own history and with appropriate peers; a lower share price is not automatically cheap.
  4. Check the portfolio concentration. Add exposures across direct shares, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and employee or family holdings. Several funds can own the same large companies, leaving more concentration than the account labels suggest.
  5. Match the decision to your horizon and cash needs. Money needed soon cannot take the same equity risk as money invested for a long goal. Consider whether a loss would force a sale during another decline.
  6. Write down the thesis and disconfirming evidence. State why you own the security, what would invalidate that reason and what information would justify a review. This reduces decisions driven only by the latest price move.

Does diversification still work when the whole market falls?

Yes, but its job is narrower than many investors expect. Holding companies from different sectors can reduce the damage from a product failure, fraud, regulatory action or weak demand confined to one industry. It cannot remove a shock that affects most listed shares, so a diversified equity portfolio may still record a substantial temporary loss.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India’s investor guidance recommends considering investment horizon, risk appetite, diversification, asset allocation and periodic portfolio review. Diversification across asset classes—rather than only across equity sectors—can change how much of a broad equity decline reaches the total portfolio. The appropriate mix depends on personal objectives and is not a guarantee against loss.

Sector diversification versus asset allocation

Approach What it can reduce What it cannot remove
Several companies within one sector Single-company events, such as an accounting problem or product failure. Sector-wide demand, regulation or valuation shocks.
IT, FMCG and banking together Some sector-specific earnings risks. A common equity-market repricing or broad foreign selling.
Equities combined with other asset classes Dependence on one asset class’s return pattern. Losses in the equity portion and the possibility that assets decline together in a crisis.

Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a signal that a falling sector must be bought or sold. A review can restore the allocation to the target chosen for your goals, provided taxes, costs and liquidity are considered.

Macro explanations that need careful qualification

Interest rates and inflation

Higher inflation can pressure household purchasing power and business costs, while changing rate expectations can affect valuation multiples and bank funding conditions. Those channels are plausible explanations for a joint move, but a claim that rates or inflation caused a particular day’s decline requires dated evidence linking the event to the prices.

Currency movements

The RBI states that India’s exchange rate is market-determined and that it uses two-sided foreign-exchange intervention to contain excessive volatility and maintain orderly conditions, not to target a particular exchange-rate level. Currency changes can influence export-oriented IT earnings, imported inputs for consumer companies and banks’ foreign-currency exposures, but the available framework does not establish a currency move as the cause of a current joint fall.

Global and geopolitical risk

Geopolitical tension can reduce risk appetite across emerging markets and prompt investors to move money into perceived safer assets. It can also affect oil, supply chains, client spending or credit quality differently by sector. Treat it as a possible common trigger, then test the company-level effects rather than assuming a uniform impact.

Common mistakes when sectors fall together

  • Calling every decline a buying opportunity. A lower price may reflect lower expected earnings or a still-excessive valuation.
  • Assuming diversification failed. Diversification is intended to reduce relative concentration risk, not guarantee a positive return in every market session.
  • Using one sector’s explanation for all three. A bank’s credit risk, an IT company’s client demand and an FMCG maker’s input costs require different evidence.
  • Reacting to a headline without checking the holding. Index-level news may not apply to a company with a different geography, product mix or balance sheet.
  • Ignoring liquidity needs. Selling long-term assets to meet a near-term expense can convert a temporary market loss into a permanent one.
  • Treating past performance as a forecast. SEBI cautions that historical returns provide context but do not guarantee future returns.

What investors can reasonably conclude

A synchronized fall is a signal to investigate common exposure and liquidity, not proof that IT, FMCG and banking stocks have become one business. The 2024 RBI episode shows how foreign selling, valuation pressure, macroeconomic news and earnings disappointment can reach several sectors at once. It does not rank these sectors for today, predict a rebound or establish a 2026 correlation.

Make the next decision from two separate files: a market-level assessment of flows, valuations and macro risk, and a company-level assessment of earnings, balance-sheet strength and valuation. Keep the resulting allocation consistent with your objective, time horizon, cash requirements and ability to tolerate further declines.
