Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) ingest, so a stream showing only 1080p does not automatically mean YouTube has imposed a platform-wide cap. The first things to check are the resolution reaching your encoder, the encoder’s actual output, the stream key’s settings, and whether your upload connection can sustain the stream. Work through those checks before buying new hardware.
1. Confirm that your encoder is sending 4K
A 4K camera, game, or desktop source does not guarantee a 4K livestream. The encoder may be scaling its output to 1920×1080, or the source itself may be delivering 1080p.
- Check the source: Confirm that the camera, capture source, game, or desktop scene is outputting 3840×2160 at the frame rate you intend to stream.
- Check the encoder output: Inspect the encoder’s streaming output resolution. It must be set to 3840×2160; a 4K input can still be encoded and sent at 1080p.
- Check the feed arriving at YouTube: YouTube detects the resolution and frame rate selected in the encoder by default. If the incoming feed is 1080p, a 4K-capable source upstream will not make the live stream 4K.
For YouTube’s platform-side controls, see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
2. Check whether the stream key is limiting resolution
YouTube recommends automatic resolution detection by default. If you use a custom stream key, review its stream-resolution settings: a manual selection can limit the incoming stream even when the encoder is configured for 4K.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Go live.
- Open the stream’s settings and inspect the selected stream key.
- If that key uses manual settings, check whether Turn on manual settings is enabled under stream resolution and whether the chosen resolution is below 2160p.
- Use automatic detection unless you specifically need manual settings; if you do, select a resolution that matches the encoder output.
Changing a key’s setting will not turn a 1080p encoder output into 4K. The outgoing signal and the key must both allow the intended resolution.
3. Verify protocol, codec, and encoder settings
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS and the H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 codecs. Your encoder must support and actually send the protocol and codec you select. For a standard SDR stream, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the maximum recommended interval is four seconds.

- Bitrate mode: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and protocol: Confirm the encoder is sending a combination supported by YouTube, not merely that the software offers it in a menu.
YouTube’s H.264 live bitrate recommendations for 2160p
The following are YouTube Help’s live ingest recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. They are for H.264; YouTube’s AV1 and H.265/HEVC recommendations use separate ranges in its live encoder table.
| Live output | H.264 bitrate recommended by YouTube |
|---|---|
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Use the current YouTube live encoder settings table for the exact codec and frame-rate combination you intend to use. Do not substitute YouTube’s upload bitrate figures for live recommendations: its separate upload guidance lists 35–45 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 4K uploads and 53–68 Mbps for high-frame-rate 4K uploads, which are figures for uploading videos, not live ingest settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

4. Test upload capacity and stability
A connection can test fast enough in a brief speed test yet struggle during a sustained livestream. Test the actual upload connection before the event, account for the stream’s total bitrate, and leave room for variation and other traffic.
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection and computer or encoder you will use for the event.
- Compare the available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate. If sending primary and backup streams, count both.
- Leave at least 20% upload headroom, as YouTube’s streaming tips recommend. Avoid a heavily shared or unstable connection where possible.
- Before the event, test with audio and motion similar to the real program, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while live.
Guidance: YouTube streaming tips.
5. Account for 4K latency and HDR separately
4K uses normal latency
YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p live streams; 4K uses normal latency. If the event depends on near-real-time audience interaction, weigh that trade-off against the benefit of 4K before choosing the output resolution. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

HDR is not a fix for an SDR stream stuck at 1080p
HDR live streaming is a separate workflow. YouTube’s HDR instructions specify HLS output, HEVC, 10-bit video, and compatible HDR color metadata. Those requirements apply when you are setting up HDR; they are not a general remedy for an SDR feed that is only reaching YouTube at 1080p. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions.

| What you see | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The source is 4K, but the stream is 1080p | The encoder output is scaled to 1080p. | Set the encoder’s streaming output to 3840×2160 and verify the actual outgoing feed. |
| The encoder is set to 4K, but YouTube receives 1080p | The selected custom stream key may have manual resolution settings, or the encoder may not be sending its configured output. | Inspect the key’s manual-resolution setting and confirm the encoder’s live output and selected key. |
| The stream becomes unstable at 4K | Upload capacity may be insufficient or variable for the total bitrate. | Test the connection, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, include any backup stream bitrate, and monitor stream health. |
| 4K is available, but audience interaction feels delayed | 4K uses normal latency; YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable at 2160p. | Decide whether 4K detail or lower latency matters more for this event. |
| You are considering new streaming hardware | The current encoder may not support a suitable 2160p output, but settings or network limits may be the actual problem. | First verify the source, encoder output, key settings, supported codec, and upload capacity. Replace or add hardware only if the current encoder cannot send a suitable 2160p stream after those checks. |
7. Keep a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream running without a home computer
If your real goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than stream a camera or live production, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera, and it is not a way to send a live camera feed.
