If your TV has a picture but no sound, first check mute, volume and the selected audio output. Then test the TV’s built-in sound, and isolate any streaming player, soundbar, receiver or cable in the signal path. This sequence helps distinguish a simple routing issue from a problem limited to one source or audio format.
First, identify where the sound disappears
Confirm the TV has a picture and is set to the intended input. If there is no picture either, you are dealing with a different problem. Note whether sound is missing from every source or only one app, channel, HDMI input or program. For Roku players, the no-sound guidance applies when the player’s picture is visible on the TV.

- Unmute the TV and raise its volume. Use the TV remote first so you know its own controls are not the cause.
- Check the TV’s audio output. Select the internal speakers or the connected audio system you intend to use. A TV can remain routed to an external speaker after that device has been disconnected. On Samsung TVs, the support instructions give Settings > Sound > Speaker Settings as an example path; check that TV Speaker is selected when you want the TV’s speakers. The exact path can vary by model.
- Check the connected device separately. A streaming player, set-top box, soundbar or receiver can have its own mute, volume and input selection. Make sure the audio system is set to the input receiving the TV or player’s sound.
LG’s TV audio troubleshooting guidance notes that Sound Out may still point to an external speaker when it is disconnected. Roku’s no-sound troubleshooting also calls for checking the TV’s mute and volume when a Roku player’s picture is visible.

Run the TV’s sound test
A built-in test can help separate a TV speaker or audio issue from a problem with an external source. Samsung documents Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Sound Test. LG instructs users to check Sound Out and run Sound Self-Diagnosis. These paths are examples, not universal menu instructions.
- If the test plays sound: Focus next on the connected device, input, cable or audio format involved in the silent source.
- If the test is silent: Follow the manufacturer’s support or service process. A silent test alone does not establish the cause.

Isolate a streaming player, receiver, soundbar or cable
If the TV test works but one source does not, check the signal path one link at a time rather than replacing cables or changing settings at random.
- Confirm the TV is on the input connected to the silent device.
- Check that device’s mute, volume and selected input. For a soundbar or receiver, verify it is listening to the connection carrying audio.
- Reseat the cable at both ends. If the device is connected through an AVR or soundbar, test a simpler direct connection to the TV if practical; this can help identify which device or link is involved.
- Try another known-working TV input or source. Change one cable at a time only when a cable or connection is suspect; use a cable suitable for the devices and connection, as specified in their manuals.
Roku’s player troubleshooting recommends checking connections and changing cables one at a time in relevant setups. LG also includes trying another HDMI cable among its troubleshooting options. For a Samsung HDMI audio-source test, Samsung describes connecting the device directly to the TV with an HDMI cable under 2 meters; that is Samsung-specific test guidance, not a general cable-length rule. Check ARC/eARC, HDMI control and audio format
For a soundbar or receiver connected over HDMI
Make sure the TV’s audio output is set to the external system and that the HDMI cable uses the TV port labeled ARC or eARC when that connection is required. Check HDMI-CEC control on the TV and audio system; manufacturers may use names such as Anynet+ or SIMPLINK. If ARC output is silent, Google’s audio troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the TV’s digital audio output setting. Available options and menu paths depend on the equipment.
If only surround-sound programs are silent
A format selected for a movie, show or device may not be supported by every component in the chain. Test stereo, or choose a format supported by the TV and the connected receiver or soundbar. Roku describes different considerations for direct HDMI, AVR or soundbar, and optical connections; for optical output, select a compatible digital output format. Restart devices, then escalate if needed
After checking output selection and connections, restart the TV and the connected audio or streaming devices. Check for available software updates for the TV and the connected device. Samsung includes restarting and checking for updates in its sound troubleshooting steps.
