If your gaming monitor is stuck at 60Hz or 144Hz, first check the selected display and resolution in Windows Advanced display settings. The highest available rate depends on the monitor, GPU, connection path, and the resolution you’re using—not just a setting in the game.
Why the refresh-rate option may be missing
A monitor’s refresh rate is the number of times its screen updates each second; Microsoft gives 60Hz as an example of 60 screen updates per second. The rate you can select depends on the display mode and the hardware connecting it. A monitor’s advertised maximum may not be available at every resolution or over every input, so check the specifications for both the monitor and GPU before assuming a cable or display is faulty.

Resolution and refresh rate work as a pair. Windows marks a refresh rate with an asterisk when it does not support the current resolution; choosing that mode changes the resolution to one that can use the selected rate. See Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guidance.
- Wrong display selected: In a multi-monitor setup, Windows applies the setting to the display currently selected.
- Resolution and rate do not match: The desired rate may be available only at a different supported resolution.
- Connection path limits the mode: A port, cable, adapter, dock, or KVM may affect which options appear.
- GPU or driver limits the list: Available controls and modes depend on the graphics hardware and driver.
- Monitor input or capability: The display may not support that mode through the input being used, or it may need attention if it fails on multiple systems.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If you have more than one display, select the gaming monitor in the display selector. Confirm it is the screen connected to the gaming GPU.
- Check the current resolution and the refresh-rate list. Select the highest rate shown that the monitor supports.
- If the target rate is missing or marked with an asterisk, check the monitor’s supported resolution-and-rate combinations and try a supported resolution.
These Windows steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft; that lifecycle date is not, by itself, a reason a monitor is limited to 60Hz. For a Windows 11 display that appears to run at a lower rate during a game, also check Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR): Microsoft says DRR requires a VRR-capable display with a refresh rate of at least 120Hz, and notes it can limit the maximum rate of some games. Microsoft suggests disabling DRR if a game appears to run at a lower rate. See the Windows refresh-rate guidance for details.

Check the NVIDIA Control Panel mode
If the PC uses an NVIDIA GPU, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution, select the intended display, and review its refresh-rate choices. NVIDIA notes that available options depend on hardware and driver settings, and that bandwidth limits can affect output options. Its documented color-depth example says lowering resolution or refresh rate may expose an option; that is not a guaranteed fix for every missing mode. See NVIDIA’s help pages for selecting a screen refresh rate and changing resolution.
Do not start with custom timings. They are an advanced control, not the first troubleshooting step. If you use a graphics card from another vendor, use its official documentation for any vendor-specific controls rather than assuming NVIDIA menu labels apply.

Isolate the cable, port, and intermediate devices
Before buying a cable or other hardware, simplify the connection path. Microsoft recommends removing accessories, trying another port, and testing the display with another cable or system when troubleshooting external-monitor problems. Follow this sequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Disconnect docks, dongles, KVMs, and adapters temporarily.
- Connect the monitor directly to a GPU output, if possible.
- Reseat the cable at both ends. If you have one, try a known-good cable specified for the target resolution and refresh rate.
- Try another GPU output or monitor input that supports the desired mode.
- If possible, connect the monitor to another computer and check whether the expected mode appears.
Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide covers cable, accessory, port, and alternate-system checks. If the expected mode is still absent on another system, check the monitor’s input settings and specifications, or consider a display fault. If it works on another system, focus on the original PC’s GPU output, connection path, or driver. That comparison helps narrow the cause but does not, on its own, identify a specific faulty component.

Confirm the exact supported connection
There is no universal rule that 144Hz always requires DisplayPort, or one cable version that works for every monitor and GPU. Verify the exact target resolution and refresh rate against the monitor’s input specifications and the GPU’s output specifications. Account for any adapter or dock in between; when the mode does not appear, a direct connection is a useful test. Replace a cable only when its specifications do not support the mode you need or testing shows the existing cable is the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Refresh rate is not the same as game FPS
A game’s FPS counter reports how quickly the game is producing frames; Windows’ display setting reports the selected monitor refresh rate. Changing an in-game graphics setting cannot make an unsupported display mode appear in Windows. Check the Windows or GPU control-panel mode first, then configure the game separately.
