If Wi-Fi is fast on other devices but slow on one, start by checking that device’s connection, band, location, adapter and software. Compare it with a faster device on the same network and in the same place, then try the slow device on another trusted Wi-Fi network. These tests help narrow down whether the problem follows the device or is specific to your home network; neither result alone proves the cause.
First, make sure the comparison is fair
Test the slow device and a faster one on the same Wi-Fi network, in the same location and at roughly the same time. Use the same speed-test service if possible. Otherwise, differences in distance, network load, access point or Wi-Fi band can make the comparison misleading. Microsoft recommends comparing with another device on the same network, while Ofcom notes that both the device and its location can affect Wi-Fi performance.

Check whether the problem follows the device
- Move it near the router. Run another test with fewer walls and obstructions between the device and router. If performance improves, signal strength or interference may be contributing.
- Try another trusted Wi-Fi network. If the device is still slow elsewhere, focus on its settings, Wi-Fi adapter, drivers or software. If it works normally elsewhere, investigate the home router, its settings, placement, firmware or local interference.
These results narrow the possibilities but do not identify a single cause by themselves. A device and router can also interact differently, so one slow device does not automatically clear the router.

Check the Wi-Fi band and device capability
Routers may offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router has separate network names for different bands, try another one the device supports. Microsoft says 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput than 2.4 GHz. 6 GHz can deliver high performance near the router, but both the router and device must support it. A higher-frequency band is not automatically faster at every distance: range, walls and congestion still matter.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If a band is unavailable or does not work well on the slow device, check the device’s Wi-Fi specifications or adapter settings. A device may not support a band or capability that the router offers.
Rule out distance, walls and interference
Wi-Fi can slow down when a device is far from the router or separated from it by walls, metal or other obstructions. Nearby electronics can also interfere. Apple lists microwaves, power cables, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras and cordless phones among possible sources. Move the device closer to the router and, if practical, away from these sources before testing again. Ofcom also identifies distance, walls and interference as factors in Wi-Fi performance.

Check device software and settings
Windows
- Run the Windows network troubleshooter.
- Check whether the Wi-Fi adapter supports the frequency used by your network.
- Follow the computer or adapter manufacturer’s guidance for driver updates.
- Save a network reset for later: Microsoft notes that it may require networking software, such as a VPN client, to be reinstalled or configured again.
iPhone and iPad
Apple recommends checking whether the problem occurs only on one Wi-Fi network, confirming that the router supports the device and has current firmware, and testing another available frequency. VPN or third-party security software can also affect network connectivity. If the device is managed by a workplace or school, do not remove its security settings without consulting the responsible IT administrator.
Decide what to do next
- Slow on multiple networks: If the device remains slow after checking its band, software and settings, contact its manufacturer or a repair provider. A limited or faulty Wi-Fi adapter is one possibility, not a conclusion based on slowness alone.
- Slow only on your home network: Check router placement, supported bands, firmware and settings. If several devices are slow, or this device works normally elsewhere, contact the router maker or your internet provider.
A compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter may be an option for a laptop if checks point to its built-in adapter. Confirm that the adapter supports the laptop’s operating system, port and required Wi-Fi standard. It is not a general fix for phones or tablets, or for problems caused by router placement, interference or network settings.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Ofcom’s advice is for the UK; readers elsewhere should consult their local regulator or internet provider for region-specific help.
