PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your TV picture works but the soundbar is silent, start with the simple causes: make sure the TV, soundbar and playback source are powered on; clear mute and raise volume on both devices; select the soundbar’s actual input; and set the TV’s audio output to the external speaker. Then check the connection itself. HDMI audio return works only through ports labeled ARC or eARC, optical requires the correct digital output and input, and Bluetooth requires an active pairing. If those checks do not restore sound, cross-test the soundbar with another source or compatible TV before buying accessories or arranging service.
Menu names and procedures differ by television model, region and software version. The paths below use manufacturer examples, not a universal menu map.

Start with a two-minute sound check
Work through these checks in order. They eliminate configuration mistakes before you disturb cables or reset equipment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm power. Check that the TV and soundbar are both on, not in standby. If a separate streaming box, game console or set-top box supplies the programme, confirm that it is awake and playing content that should contain audio.
- Clear both mute controls. Press mute on the TV remote and on the soundbar remote or control panel. Raise the volume on each device far enough to hear a change. A TV can show a volume indicator while the bar remains muted, or the reverse.
- Verify the source. Play a known audio source, such as a programme or app that normally produces sound. A paused stream, silent channel or source with its own mute setting can make a working soundbar appear defective.
- Match the soundbar input to the cable. Choose HDMI ARC/eARC when the cable is in the ARC/eARC port, Optical or D.IN for an optical connection, and Bluetooth when the wireless link is being used. A bar can be connected correctly but listening to a different input.
- Look at the TV output setting. Select the connected external speaker or the corresponding HDMI, optical or Bluetooth output instead of Internal TV Speakers.
- Check for a response. Watch the soundbar display or indicator while changing inputs. A source name that never changes, or a bar that immediately returns to another input, points to an input-selection or connection problem rather than a programme problem.
Official troubleshooting guidance from Samsung US Support and LG USA Support starts with these power, volume, playback and input checks for the same reason: they are quick, reversible and commonly responsible.

Identify the connection before changing settings
Look at the cable and the labels beside the ports on both products. Your next step depends on whether the system uses HDMI ARC/eARC, optical or Bluetooth.
| Connection | Physical requirement | Soundbar input | TV setting to verify | Typical diagnostic clue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Both endpoints must support the same ARC/eARC function; the cable must be in the ports labeled ARC or eARC | HDMI ARC/eARC; some Samsung procedures begin on D.IN and change to TV ARC | External speaker/HDMI ARC output and, where required, HDMI-CEC | No audio when the cable is in an ordinary HDMI input, or the bar never changes from D.IN to TV ARC |
| Optical | TV optical/digital audio output connected to the soundbar optical input; plugs fully seated in the correct orientation | Optical | Optical or digital audio output | The cable is lit or connected but either device remains set to another source |
| Bluetooth | Soundbar and TV support Bluetooth audio and are actively paired | Bluetooth | Paired Bluetooth speaker selected as output | The bar is missing from the list because it has reconnected to a nearby phone or tablet |
There is no universal “best” connection for every combination. Availability depends on the ports, compatible standards and menu choices on both devices. If ARC/eARC is not supported at one end, Sony’s compatibility guidance identifies optical or another supported audio cable as the fallback.
Set the TV to use the soundbar
Hearing the TV’s built-in speakers is a useful clue: the television is producing audio, but it may still be routing that audio internally. Open the sound settings and change the output to the connected external device.

On many LG televisions, the general path is Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out. Choose the relevant HDMI ARC, optical or Bluetooth device. LG notes that the exact menu and Bluetooth path vary across models and software generations, so use your model’s manual if the labels differ. The current LG USA external-device guide describes this as a model-dependent setting rather than a single path that applies to every TV.
Other television brands
Look for labels such as Sound Output, Audio Output, Speakers, External Speaker, Receiver, HDMI ARC, Optical or Bluetooth Speaker. Select the output that matches the connection in use. Do not assume that selecting “HDMI” means ARC; on many sets only one HDMI socket has the return-audio function.
When the TV speakers work but the bar does not
Keep the TV playing and switch temporarily between Internal Speakers and the external output. If internal speakers work immediately while the external option is silent, concentrate on output selection, port labeling, input selection and cable or pairing status. If neither output produces sound, troubleshoot the source or TV audio first.

Fix HDMI ARC and eARC connections
HDMI return audio is the most common source of confusion because an HDMI plug can fit several sockets while only a specially labeled port carries TV audio back to the soundbar. LG states: “To send audio from the TV to the soundbar through an HDMI cable, you must use an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port.” This wording appears in LG USA Support’s “No Sound from a Connected External Device (Sound Bar, Bluetooth Earbuds) on Your LG TV,” dated August 18, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Confirm compatibility and port labels
Check the specifications or labels on both devices. The TV must have an HDMI ARC/eARC output and the soundbar must have a matching ARC/eARC input. Connect the cable from the TV socket labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the soundbar socket with the same function. A regular HDMI input is not a substitute for the TV’s return-audio port.
2. Enable HDMI-CEC when the equipment requires it
ARC handshaking often depends on HDMI-CEC, the control feature that lets connected devices communicate. Manufacturers use different names: Samsung calls it Anynet+ and LG calls it SIMPLINK. Turn on the relevant CEC option in the TV’s connection or general settings and on the soundbar if its menu provides one. The exact location is model-specific.
3. Select the soundbar’s ARC input
Choose HDMI ARC/eARC on the bar. In Samsung’s described flow, selecting D.IN is part of the setup; when the ARC link succeeds, the source should change to TV ARC. If it stays on D.IN, the TV and bar have not completed the expected connection sequence. Recheck the labeled sockets, CEC setting and TV audio output before assuming the bar has failed.
4. Reseat the cable safely
Turn both devices off, unplug them from power if necessary, remove and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends, then power them back on. Inspect for a loose fit or visible damage. If the source still does not change to TV ARC, try a known-good HDMI cable. This is a diagnostic substitution, not proof that every no-sound problem requires a new cable.
5. Isolate a TV-versus-soundbar fault
Connect the soundbar to another compatible TV with ARC, or test another known-working ARC soundbar on the original TV if one is available. Samsung’s troubleshooting flow uses another ARC-capable TV as a cross-test. A bar that works on the second TV shifts attention to the original TV, its settings or its cable. A bar that remains silent with another compatible source justifies manufacturer support or service.

Fix an optical connection
Optical is a separate digital-audio path; selecting HDMI ARC or Bluetooth on either device will not make an optical signal audible.
- Connect the cable from the TV’s optical or digital audio output to the soundbar’s optical input. Verify that both products actually have those ports.
- Check the connector orientation and push each plug fully into place. Optical plugs can appear inserted while still sitting at an angle or against a protective cap.
- Set the TV’s sound output to Optical or Digital Audio Out.
- Set the soundbar source to Optical. Watch for its optical indicator or source label.
- Play a known audio source and raise volume on both devices. If the TV offers a digital-audio format choice and one setting is silent, consult the TV and soundbar manuals for the formats they support rather than guessing.
Optical is a practical fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable or incompatible, provided both endpoints include the required ports. Sony’s support information recommends using optical or another supported connection when the products cannot use ARC/eARC.
Fix Bluetooth soundbar pairing
Bluetooth has no cable to inspect, so the important checks are discoverability, the selected output and competing nearby connections.
- Put the soundbar into its Bluetooth pairing mode. The button or remote command differs by model; the bar should show a pairing indicator or message.
- Open the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device list and select the soundbar. Accept the pairing request if the TV displays one.
- Choose the paired bar as the TV’s sound output, not merely as a saved device.
- If the bar does not appear, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones and tablets. A previously paired device may have connected automatically, making the bar unavailable to the TV.
- Once paired, play audio and check volume and mute on both products. If the connection drops, move the previously paired device away or disable its Bluetooth until TV listening is finished.
Bluetooth menu labels vary by LG webOS generation and by other TV platforms. Use the model-specific instructions if the television’s list or pairing controls do not match these descriptions, as advised in LG’s external-device support page.
Power-cycle and reconnect without losing track of the diagnosis
A restart can clear a failed HDMI handshake or a stale Bluetooth session, but do it methodically so you know what changed.
- Stop playback and turn off the TV, soundbar and external source.
- Disconnect the HDMI or optical cable at both ends. For an HDMI issue, leave the devices powered down while you inspect the labels and cable fit.
- Reconnect the same cable to the correct ports, without changing the connection type at the same time.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar, then the external source. Allow each device to finish starting before changing inputs.
- Select the corresponding soundbar source and TV output, then test with a known audio programme.
LG’s soundbar guidance recommends unplugging and reconnecting the cable, then powering the devices back on. If a restart restores sound only temporarily, record which input and output were selected; an intermittent setting or handshake problem is more useful information for support than a general report that “it stopped working.”

Use cross-tests to locate the failing part
When basic settings are correct, change one variable at a time. This avoids buying a cable or replacing a soundbar before you know which component is responsible.

| Play another source through the same soundbar input | Second source has sound | Soundbar and that input can produce audio; the original TV or source is the likely problem | Check the original source’s output, mute and cable path |
| Play another source through the same soundbar input | Both sources are silent | Input selection, cable, compatibility or soundbar hardware remains suspect | Repeat the port and cable checks, then test with another compatible device |
| Test the soundbar on another compatible ARC TV | Sound works | Original TV settings, ARC port or TV-side hardware is implicated | Review the original TV’s ARC/CEC and output settings or contact its support |
| Test the soundbar on another compatible ARC TV | Still silent | The bar, its cable or its compatibility is implicated | Contact the soundbar manufacturer or arrange authorized service |
Samsung and LG both recommend this kind of source or TV cross-test. It separates a configuration fault from a component fault without relying on a single indicator light.
Choose between available connections intelligently
If more than one connection works, compare the actual capabilities of your equipment rather than assuming one method is universally superior.
- Use HDMI ARC/eARC when both products support it, the labeled ports are available and the TV and bar offer the required output and input settings.
- Use optical when ARC/eARC is absent, incompatible or difficult to establish, and both products have optical ports.
- Use Bluetooth when wireless placement is important and both devices support Bluetooth audio, while remembering that nearby paired devices can capture the connection.
Before purchasing anything, read the port labels and specifications for the exact TV and soundbar models. The support information from Sony, LG and Samsung establishes compatibility and settings as the deciding factors; it does not establish a single connection as best for every setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a replacement cable is justified
A different cable is a sensible diagnostic step only after compatibility, port selection, output settings and seating have been checked. For HDMI, Samsung specifically recommends trying another cable when the soundbar does not transition from D.IN to TV ARC. Use a cable known to work in a comparable setup if possible, and keep the original cable for a later comparison.
An optical/TOSLINK cable is relevant only when the TV and soundbar both have compatible optical ports or when you are deliberately using optical as the fallback connection. The available support guidance does not establish a required brand, length, price or certification, so verify the ports before buying.

Symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Most useful checks |
|---|---|
| The TV speakers work, but the soundbar is silent | Select the external output, match the bar’s input, then verify the ARC/eARC, optical or Bluetooth path. |
| The soundbar says D.IN and never changes to TV ARC | Confirm ARC-labeled ports, enable Anynet+ or SIMPLINK if required, reseat the HDMI cable and test another known-good cable. |
| An HDMI cable is connected but there is no TV audio | Move it from an ordinary HDMI socket to the TV and soundbar sockets labeled ARC/eARC, then select the matching output and input. |
| The optical cable is connected but silent | Check orientation and full insertion, select Optical on both devices and verify that both endpoints have optical ports. |
| The Bluetooth bar is not listed | Enter pairing mode and disable Bluetooth on nearby phones or tablets that may have reconnected automatically. |
| Sound stops after changing apps or sources | Check whether the TV changed its output or whether the bar changed input; retest with a known audio source. |
| Sound fails with multiple sources and a second compatible TV | Stop buying accessories and contact the soundbar manufacturer or arrange authorized service. |
When to contact support or service
Escalate after you have confirmed power, volume, playback, the selected input, the TV output and the correct physical connection, then completed at least one cross-test. Give support the exact TV and soundbar model numbers, connection type, port labels, selected inputs and outputs, whether HDMI-CEC is enabled, and the result of the second-source or second-TV test. That information lets the manufacturer distinguish a settings issue from a compatibility or hardware fault.
Do not continue purchasing cables or adapters when the soundbar fails with more than one known-good source and a compatible TV. That pattern points away from a single TV setting and toward the soundbar, cable or compatibility itself. Use the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized technician, especially if the unit powers off, overheats or shows physical damage.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Write down which TV socket is labeled ARC/eARC and which soundbar input carries TV audio.
- Leave HDMI-CEC enabled when your equipment depends on it, and note the manufacturer’s name for that feature: Anynet+ on Samsung or SIMPLINK on LG.
- Keep the optical cable fully seated and avoid sharply bending it near the connectors.
- After pairing Bluetooth, prevent nearby phones and tablets from automatically reclaiming the soundbar when you want TV audio.
- If you change connection type, update both the physical cable and the TV output and soundbar input; changing only one side creates a silent but apparently connected system.
- Save the model-specific manual or support page, because menu labels and procedures can change with software versions and regional models.
Most silent soundbars are restored by matching the TV output, soundbar input and physical connection. When those three agree and a cross-test still fails, the evidence is strong enough to seek manufacturer help rather than guessing at another setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any HDMI socket on the TV for soundbar audio?
No. TV audio return requires the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC, connected to the soundbar’s corresponding ARC/eARC input; an ordinary HDMI input does not provide that return path.
Why does my soundbar show D.IN instead of TV ARC?
In Samsung’s ARC setup flow, D.IN should change to TV ARC after a successful handshake. If it does not, check the ARC-labeled ports, HDMI-CEC setting, TV output selection and cable, then cross-test with another compatible TV.
Is optical usable if my TV and soundbar do not support ARC?
Yes, if both devices have the required optical ports. Connect the TV’s optical output to the bar’s optical input and select Optical on both devices.
Why can my phone connect to the soundbar but my TV cannot?
A nearby phone or tablet may have reclaimed the bar’s Bluetooth connection. Turn Bluetooth off on those devices, put the soundbar into pairing mode and select it from the TV’s Bluetooth list.
