The usual causes are a disabled or dimmed backlight, the wrong shortcut, a lighting-control or driver problem, or a TUF A15 configuration that does not have a backlit keyboard. Check the exact model and its manual first, then try the model-specific shortcut. If the keyboard lights before Windows loads but goes dark after sign-in, focus on ASUS software or Windows lighting controls; if it never lights after the software and reset steps below, arrange a hardware diagnosis.
First, confirm your exact TUF A15 model has a backlight
“TUF A15” covers multiple generations and configurations, including FA506 and FA507 variants. Keyboard lighting can be absent, white, single-zone RGB, or controlled with more advanced RGB effects. Do not assume every gaming-laptop configuration includes it.
Find the full model identifier in Settings → System → About, MyASUS, BIOS, on the bottom-panel label, or on the original box or invoice. Then use that identifier to find the manual and specifications on the ASUS support page for your model. Check the manual for a keyboard-backlight hotkey and inspect the function keys for a lighting symbol. ASUS notes that shortcuts vary by model and that a manual without a backlight hotkey may indicate the feature is unsupported (ASUS keyboard hotkey guidance).
If the exact configuration has no backlit keyboard, software cannot add one. Stop here rather than reinstalling Armoury Crate or Windows.

Try the correct backlight shortcut
On many ASUS gaming notebooks, Fn + Up Arrow raises keyboard brightness and Fn + Down Arrow lowers it; repeated presses may turn it off. Try the combination several times, and try the arrow key alone if your function-key behavior allows it. The exact control depends on the model and function-key-lock setting, so follow the manual for your A15 rather than assuming Fn + F7 works on every version.
Brightness and effects are different controls. A shortcut may change brightness while Armoury Crate or Aura controls colors and effects on supported models. Some models have a separate Aura key, but its location and behavior are model-specific. A FA507NUR example manual describes Aura lighting; use your own model’s manual for its controls.
Use the symptoms to choose the next step
- No light at any time: Reconfirm backlight support, then try a full shutdown and the reset steps below. A dark keyboard at startup is a clue, not proof, of a hardware failure.
- It lights before Windows but goes dark after sign-in: Suspect an ASUS service, driver, Armoury Crate, or Windows lighting-control conflict.
- Brightness changes but colors or effects do not: The lighting may be working while its RGB control software is not, or the model may not support the effect you want.
- It is stuck on one color: Check Armoury Crate and, on supported Windows 11 RGB systems, Dynamic Lighting.
- Only part of the keyboard lights, or some keys also fail: A keyboard, cable, LED-zone, or other hardware issue becomes more plausible.
To compare startup behavior, connect the AC adapter, restart, and watch for lighting before Windows loads. Also perform a true shutdown—choose Start → Power → Shut down, wait several seconds, then power on—rather than relying on sleep or closing the lid. If the backlight works at startup but fails only once Windows has loaded, troubleshoot software before considering repair.
Check Armoury Crate for RGB and lighting-effect problems
Armoury Crate is ASUS’s control software for lighting on supported TUF gaming devices. Basic brightness may work through the hardware shortcut without it, so a missing app is not automatically the cause of a completely dark keyboard.
- Open Armoury Crate from the Start menu.
- Select the TUF A15 device and open Lighting, Aura Sync, or the equivalent control shown for that model.
- Check that device lighting is enabled and that the application detects the laptop without a service or device error.
- Open Settings → Update Center and install available Armoury Crate-related updates, then restart Windows and test again.
ASUS describes lighting control for supported TUF devices in its Armoury Crate lighting guidance and explains updates in the Armoury Crate installation and troubleshooting guide. Aura Creator is not a universal prerequisite; it is for compatible devices and effects, not a required fix for basic keyboard brightness (ASUS Aura Creator compatibility information).

Check Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting if your model supports RGB
On some newer RGB-equipped A15 systems, Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting can manage device lighting or compete with another lighting application. It is not a likely explanation for every A15: older, non-RGB, or unsupported keyboards may not appear there at all.
- Open Settings → Personalization → Dynamic Lighting.
- Check Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices and choose whether Windows or Armoury Crate should control the keyboard.
- If Armoury Crate should control it, inspect Background light control and move Armoury Crate above competing lighting apps if the setting is available.
- Reopen Armoury Crate and test the keyboard again.
Windows labels can vary by build. ASUS identifies newer TUF A15 RGB systems as relevant to Dynamic Lighting (ASUS Dynamic Lighting guidance); its Dynamic Lighting FAQ also discusses application priority.
Reset the embedded controller, then restore BIOS defaults if needed
A controller state can interfere with hardware functions such as lighting. ASUS recommends an EC/RTC/hard reset early in its keyboard-backlight troubleshooting sequence. Because the procedure can vary by model and battery configuration, follow the instructions for your specific A15 rather than using a generic power-button hold time.

- Follow ASUS’s model-appropriate EC, RTC, or hard-reset instructions, including any requirements about disconnecting power or peripherals.
- Reconnect power if the instructions require it, start the laptop, and test the backlight.
If the problem followed a BIOS change or persists after the reset, try restoring BIOS defaults. ASUS’s guidance uses this as a subsequent step.
- Turn the laptop off.
- Hold F2 while pressing the power button and continue holding F2 until BIOS setup appears.
- Choose the BIOS version’s option to load default settings, then save and exit.
- Start Windows and test the keyboard.
Record custom boot or firmware settings first: restoring defaults can change them. Do not interrupt a BIOS update or install firmware intended for a different FA506/FA507 submodel.

Update Windows and the correct ASUS drivers
Updates are worth checking if the issue began after a Windows reinstall, a system update, or a change to ASUS utilities, or if Armoury Crate does not detect the laptop. Follow the exact model’s support page and use this order:
- Install available updates through Windows Update.
- Check MyASUS for system updates, if installed and available.
- On the exact model’s ASUS support page, check its BIOS and driver listings; install only files intended for that model.
- Install the model’s ASUS system and chipset drivers and ASUS System Control Interface driver.
- Update Armoury Crate and its related components, then restart and test.
A newer BIOS is neither a guaranteed cure nor automatically the cause. Firmware availability and applicability depend on the exact model and hardware revision. Avoid third-party driver sites.

ASUS System Control Interface is a system driver used for ASUS notebook functions, including hardware controls and hotkeys. If it is missing, corrupted, or incompatible, the keyboard can still type while its lighting shortcut stops working.
- Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand System devices.
- Right-click ASUS System Control Interface and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers an option to remove the driver, select it; then restart or install the correct driver from your exact model’s ASUS support page.
- Test the backlight shortcut again.
This is part of ASUS’s official backlight troubleshooting sequence. Do not substitute a driver downloaded from an unrelated site.

If Armoury Crate will not detect the laptop or its lighting controls fail, a clean reinstall may help. ASUS provides a dedicated uninstall tool; a standard Windows uninstall may not remove every ASUS lighting component.

- Download the Armoury Crate Uninstall Tool and official installer from ASUS.
- Run the uninstall tool and restart when prompted.
- Install Armoury Crate using ASUS’s installer, then restart Windows.
- Open the app, check that the device is detected, and test its lighting controls.
ASUS advises using a stable internet connection and avoiding VPN interference or software that blocks Armoury Crate processes during installation. If uninstalling or installing fails, restart and run the tool again. Follow the same ASUS troubleshooting guide for MyASUS or related application problems; do not assume installing MyASUS alone will repair a physical lighting fault.
Know when to seek hardware service
Contact ASUS or an authorized repair center if the exact model includes a backlight and it still fails after the model-specific shortcut, reset, BIOS-default, driver, and software steps. Hardware becomes more likely if the keyboard never illuminates before Windows loads, only a section stays dark, or the failure followed liquid exposure, impact, overheating, or work around the keyboard or palm rest. Startup behavior is an indication, not a definitive diagnosis.
Do not open the laptop just to reseat a cable unless you are qualified to do that repair. ASUS service documentation for an A15 keyboard-module repair includes disconnecting power and the battery, making it more than a casual software check (ASUS service guide example). Use ASUS support to arrange a diagnosis if the troubleshooting steps do not restore the light.

Can Armoury Crate turn on a TUF A15 keyboard that has no backlight hardware?
No. If the exact configuration was not fitted with a backlit keyboard, software cannot add one.
Will reinstalling Windows fix the backlight?
