Start with Hotel Chocolat’s basic checks: unplug the Velvetiser, let it cool, clean the jug and whisk, and make sure the whisk’s black plastic disc moves freely. If you have prepared drinks back to back, rinse the inside with cold water between cycles; Hotel Chocolat says this helps reset the temperature thermostat. Put the whisk in before adding milk and drinking chocolate. These steps can resolve residue, sticking or a temporary thermostat interruption, but they do not prove that a persistent heating failure is harmless. If the machine still will not heat, froth or stay on, stop using it and contact Hotel Chocolat support for your exact model and country.
First identify the symptom
“Not heating or frothing properly” can describe three different faults. Separating them prevents you from repeating a cleaning step when the appliance actually needs service.

Make the appliance safe before troubleshooting
Unplug the Velvetiser and allow it to cool fully before touching the jug, whisk or interior. Remove the jug from its power base. Never investigate a stuck whisk or chocolate buildup while the appliance is connected to electricity.

For routine cleaning, use a soft sponge or cloth, warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid. Wash the lid and whisk separately, wipe the handle with a soft damp cloth, and dry every part before storage. Hotel Chocolat says to avoid harsh detergents, bleach and abrasive cleaners, which can damage surfaces or leave residues.

If the Velvetiser switches off or will not start
Try the current back-to-back-drink reset
- Finish the current cycle and unplug the appliance.
- When it is safe to handle, rinse the inside of the jug with cold water. Hotel Chocolat USA describes this as a way to help reset the temperature thermostat after drinks have been made consecutively.
- Empty and dry the jug, then inspect the area beneath the whisk for chocolate buildup.
- Remove residue gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not scrape with a sharp or abrasive tool.
- Reassemble in the prescribed order: insert the whisk first, add milk next, then add Hotel Chocolat drinking chocolate.
- Reconnect the appliance and test one cycle. If it still will not power on or stops after a few seconds, contact customer service rather than repeatedly restarting it.
A cold-water rinse is a troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis. A Velvetiser that repeatedly shuts down, remains cold or trips protection needs model-specific support.
Older printed instructions may describe a different reset
Some older printed troubleshooting instructions describe another thermostat procedure: unplug the unit, fill it to the maximum line with cold clean water, remove the whisk and brush the black plastic coil, wait ten minutes, and then return the whisk. Because the instructions differ by generation, do not combine this procedure with the current USA guidance or perform both as a routine. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact model, or ask Hotel Chocolat support which procedure applies.
If the drink is not hot enough
First determine whether the appliance completed its cycle. A completed cycle that produces a merely warm drink is different from a unit that stops after a few seconds. Check that the jug was not overloaded, that the whisk was fitted before the ingredients, and that the machine was not used repeatedly without the recommended cooling rinse.

Hotel Chocolat’s US product FAQ says the ALL-NEW Velvetiser heats drinks to “154 – 158 degrees.” The captured FAQ passage does not specify whether that figure is Celsius or Fahrenheit, so it should not be converted or treated as a universal target for every generation or country. The UK FAQ includes a question about a drink not being hot enough, but the answer text available here does not establish a separate temperature specification.
If a correctly loaded cycle consistently produces an under-heated drink after the relevant reset, stop treating it as a frothing issue and contact the regional support team. Do not open the appliance or attempt an electrical repair.
If the whisk is not spinning or sounds noisy
Check the magnetic whisk and black disc
Hotel Chocolat explains that the whisk has a magnetic base that can become stuck. Chocolate residue, or a whisk stored while damp, may interfere with movement.

- Unplug and cool the Velvetiser.
- Remove the whisk and wash it in warm soapy water with a soft cloth.
- Inspect the black plastic disc at the base. Press it upward gently and confirm that it moves freely rather than remaining stuck.
- Clean any residue around the jug’s whisk area with a soft cloth.
- Dry the whisk completely before putting it back.
- Run a normal cycle with the whisk installed first. If it remains noisy or does not spin, contact support.
Do not bend the whisk, dismantle its magnetic base or substitute an unverified part. Persistent noise can indicate a component problem that cleaning cannot correct.

If frothing or mixing is weak
Frothing depends on the whisk moving through the liquid. Confirm that the whisk is present, clean, dry and able to move freely, and that the ingredients were loaded in the required order. A whisk that is stationary, intermittently spinning or scraping should be treated as a whisk fault, not as a request for a different recipe.
The available official guidance does not establish one milk type as a universal solution, a guaranteed foam volume or a maximum foam level for every recipe. Changing milk may change the result, but it is not a repair for a Velvetiser that cannot drive its whisk. Similarly, buying a generic frother will not fix a fault in this appliance.

Use ingredients the maker says are compatible
Hotel Chocolat says its own hot chocolate flakes are formulated for the Velvetiser. Its official guidance warns that other chocolate may not work properly, could damage the appliance and, in the company’s words, “for this reason it would invalidate your warranty.” This is the manufacturer’s product guidance, not an independent test of every other chocolate.
For a troubleshooting test, use the loading sequence specified by the maker: whisk first, milk second and drinking chocolate third. Adding powder before the whisk or allowing residue to accumulate underneath it can make mixing harder and obscure the original symptom. Ingredient compatibility does not explain every heating failure; a machine that remains cold with the recommended ingredients still needs support if cleaning and the appropriate reset do not help.

Clean the Velvetiser without damaging it
- Unplug the unit, remove it from the power base and let it cool.
- Wipe the inside of the jug with a soft sponge or cloth, warm water and a little washing-up liquid.
- Wash the lid and whisk separately in warm soapy water.
- Wipe the handle with a soft damp cloth.
- Rinse away soap residue and dry all parts completely before storage.
- Do not use bleach, harsh detergents or abrasive pads.
- Do not immerse electrical parts or pour water into the power base.
- Do not use a sharp object to dig chocolate from beneath the whisk.
No specialist cleaning purchase is required by the maker’s instructions; a soft cloth or sponge, warm water and washing-up liquid are the specified materials.

Model and country differences matter
Support instructions are not identical across Velvetiser generations. The current USA article recommends a cold-water rinse between consecutive drinks, while an older printed document describes filling to the maximum line, brushing the black plastic coil and waiting ten minutes. Use the procedure supplied for your model rather than assuming that a reset published for another generation applies to yours.
Before contacting support, note the model or generation, your country, what happens when you press start, whether the whisk moves, and whether the fault appears only after consecutive cycles. This information helps the regional team give the correct reset, parts and guarantee advice.
When to contact Hotel Chocolat
Contact support if the Velvetiser remains cold after the correct procedure, switches off repeatedly, will not power on, or has a whisk that stays noisy or stationary after careful cleaning. Do not continue operating an appliance that shows electrical damage, a damaged cord, burning smells or liquid around the power base.
The UK ALL-NEW Velvetiser FAQ states a two-year guarantee. The available information does not establish eligibility, exclusions or terms for every country and generation, so check the guarantee for your model with the regional support team. Keep your proof of purchase and model details available.
Replacement whisk questions
A replacement whisk is relevant when the original is lost or physically damaged, not as a first response to a heating fault. Hotel Chocolat says it can help with lost or damaged components, but compatibility between Classic and ALL-NEW generations, a current part number and seller return terms are not established here. Ask support for the exact whisk for your model before ordering; a part that looks similar may not fit or operate correctly.
A concise troubleshooting checklist
- Unplug and cool the appliance before cleaning.
- Clean the jug, lid and whisk with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
- Check that the black plastic disc on the whisk moves freely.
- After back-to-back drinks, use the cold-water rinse recommended by Hotel Chocolat USA.
- Insert the whisk before milk and drinking chocolate.
- Use the maker’s recommended chocolate when testing compatibility.
- Follow only the reset procedure supplied for your model and country.
- Escalate persistent heating, shutdown or whisk-noise problems to Hotel Chocolat support.
Cleaning and a thermostat reset can address residue, a stuck magnetic disc or a temporary over-temperature condition. They cannot guarantee a repair for a failed heater, control circuit or motor, so persistent symptoms should be handled as a support or guarantee case.
