If a voice describes what is happening on screen, your show is probably playing an audio-description track. Open the program’s audio or language controls and choose the same language without “Audio Description” or “AD.” If the voice instead reads menus and buttons aloud, check your TV or streaming device’s accessibility settings for a screen reader or voice guide.
Identify what the voice is describing
The kind of narration—and where you hear it—usually points to the setting responsible.

If narration occurs only in one show or app, begin with that player’s audio track. If menus are spoken too, or narration persists across different content, check the device-level accessibility controls as well. The controls vary by TV, streaming device, and provider; there is no single menu path that applies to every setup.

Turn off audio description in the show
- Start the episode or movie and open the player’s audio, language, or Audio and Subtitles menu.
- Choose the desired language track without “Audio Description” or “AD” in its label. If several tracks have similar names, select one explicitly marked without AD.
- Resume playback and check whether the scene narration has stopped.

- Netflix: choose a playback audio option without “Audio Description.” The feature may not be available for every season or episode.
- Apple TV 4K: select a non-AD track in playback audio options when one is available. The setting is also listed under Settings > Accessibility > Audio Descriptions.
- Max: open Audio and Subtitles in the player and choose another audio language or track.
- Disney+: use the player’s audio-language controls to choose a standard track when available.
- PBS: check the app’s Audio Description option if you are watching in the PBS app; live or broadcast programming may use DVS/SAP instead.
Audio-description tracks are not available for every title, episode, device, or region, so the options you see can differ.
Check screen-reader and voice-guide settings
If the voice announces menus or keeps speaking after you select a non-AD program track, check Accessibility settings on the device you use to watch. Look for a screen reader, VoiceOver, voice guide, or text-to-speech setting. Names and paths differ across manufacturers and devices, so use the device’s own settings menu rather than assuming the option is inside the streaming app.

Check SAP or DVS for live TV and cable
If the narration occurs on a broadcast or cable channel rather than only inside a streaming app, open the audio settings on the TV, cable box, or receiver. Switch from SAP or descriptive-video audio to the regular program audio. The relevant control may be on the receiving device rather than the television, and its name depends on the equipment and provider. PBS describes DVS as an option associated with SAP. If the voice keeps coming back
- Check the currently playing episode. If the setting seems off but scene narration continues, reopen that episode’s audio menu and choose a track without AD. Track availability and labels can vary by title and episode.
- Separate player audio from device narration. The program track controls narration describing scenes; Accessibility settings control screen readers that speak menus.
- Identify where you are watching. For a streaming title, start in the app’s player. For live TV or cable, check the TV or receiving device’s audio selection.
- Use the right device’s settings. A cable box, receiver, TV, and streaming device can each have their own audio or accessibility controls, so the setting that matters may not be on the screen currently showing the program.
If you need device-specific steps, identify the TV or streaming device, the app or channel, and whether the voice describes scenes or reads menus. Those details determine which audio control to check.
