Your Samsung phone’s storage is full when the space for photos, downloads, apps and other files or app data is nearly used up. The cause varies, so first check your phone’s storage breakdown; then remove only items you recognize and no longer need. Back up anything you want to keep before deleting it.
What “storage full” means
Storage is the phone’s capacity for files and app data. It is different from memory (RAM), which apps use while they run. A storage warning can result from photos and videos, downloaded files, apps and their data, or other local files; there is no single culprit that applies to every Galaxy phone. Google explains the difference and how to inspect storage categories in its Android storage guide.

Find what is using space on your Samsung phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care, then Storage. The exact labels and available options vary by model, software version and country. Samsung describes the storage breakdown and care tools in its Device care guide.
- Look for the largest categories, such as images, videos, audio, documents, apps, Trash, unused apps or duplicate files. Categories and suggestions are not identical on every phone.
- If you do not see that path, open My Files and look for Analyze storage, or review folders such as Downloads. Samsung notes that My Files screens and features vary by model and country in its Galaxy file-management guide.
Free space in order of risk
Review large files and downloads
In My Files, inspect large videos, old downloads and documents. Downloads saved by a browser or another app can occupy internal storage. Open or preview a file before deleting it, and remove only files you recognize and no longer need. Samsung’s storage cleanup instructions cover large files and downloads.
Check Trash before emptying it
Some Galaxy phones send deleted items to a Trash or Recycle bin rather than immediately removing them. Review its contents before emptying it: permanent deletion ends the opportunity to restore those files. Trash is not available on every model; on supported devices Samsung says items are permanently deleted after 30 days. See Samsung’s My Files guidance.

Uninstall apps you no longer use
Remove apps you recognize and no longer need. Some supported Galaxy phones show an Unused apps suggestion under Storage, but do not expect every model to offer it. If an app contains information you need, check its own backup or export options before uninstalling.
Handle duplicate files carefully
My Files may identify duplicate files for review. Do not select and delete every item in a duplicate group: Samsung warns that deleting all of them can also remove the original. Keep the copy you want and delete only files you have verified are redundant. Samsung explains the warning in its duplicate-file guide.

Clear cache, not app storage, unless you understand the consequence
An app’s cache is temporary data. Clearing it may reclaim some space, although the app may run more slowly the next time it opens while it rebuilds cached information. Clear storage or Clear data is different: Google says it permanently deletes all data saved by that app. Prefer deleting unneeded content from inside the app first, and make sure you understand what is stored locally before using Android’s clear-storage option. Keep wanted files and still reclaim local space
Copy wanted files to a computer or external storage before removing their local copies. Google documents transferring files to a computer by USB in its Android storage guide. Samsung also describes moving files to an SD card or connected external storage in its My Files guide.

- Choose the destination and copy the files you want to keep.
- Open the destination copy to confirm it works before deleting the phone’s copy.
- Delete the local file only after you have verified the backup or transfer.
If your photos are backed up with Google Photos, Google says backed-up content can be accessed in the app when the phone is connected to the internet. Confirm that upload or backup has completed before removing local copies.
Can an SD card or USB drive add storage?
External storage can hold files moved off the phone, freeing space on internal storage after you verify the transfer. It does not increase the phone’s built-in internal capacity. Samsung says most, but not all, Galaxy phones offer an SD-card option; check the specifications for your exact model before buying a microSD card. A USB-C flash drive may be another option, but confirm the phone’s connector and file-transfer compatibility. The amount and type of data you need to move, and whether you have a verified backup, also matter.

If the phone still reports low storage
Recheck the Storage screen after cleanup and allow time for the displayed breakdown to refresh. If the warning remains, return to the category breakdown rather than deleting files indiscriminately; another category or app may still be using space. Samsung’s US low-storage troubleshooting page also directs users to storage cleanup through Device care. Menu names and available actions vary across Galaxy devices.
