A Samsung Chromebook can feel slow because of an update waiting to finish, heavy CPU or memory use, browser tabs or extensions, or a slow internet connection. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Start with a ChromeOS update, then use Diagnostics and Task Manager to check what is happening on the device. If only websites, streaming, or downloads are slow, troubleshoot the network separately.
First, tell device slowness from internet slowness
Notice what is slow: the launcher, Settings, and local apps, or mainly websites, streaming, and downloads. If local parts of ChromeOS also respond slowly, check the device’s update status and resource use. If only online activity is affected, examine the connection; a slow network by itself does not show that the Chromebook’s processor or memory is failing. Check ChromeOS for an update
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates, if the option is available.
- If an update installs, restart when prompted so the installation can finish.
ChromeOS updates automatically when the device is connected, but a restart may be needed to complete one. The update schedule shown in Settings is specific to that device; do not infer it from the Samsung brand or the Chromebook’s apparent age. If a school- or work-managed Chromebook cannot apply an update, ask its administrator. Google’s update instructions explain how to check the device’s schedule.
Check CPU and memory use
Use Diagnostics
Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. The app can check CPU, memory, battery, and connectivity. Review the CPU graph for applications using substantial processing resources and run the memory test. A failed CPU or memory test is a reason to contact the Chromebook’s manufacturer; it is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis of the cause. Use Task Manager to identify active processes
Press Search + Esc to open Task Manager. Inspect the apps or processes using memory, then close only items you do not need. Samsung also recommends closing unused tabs. Avoid running a CPU stress test as a first step for ordinary browsing: it can make normal use difficult while the test is active. Samsung’s troubleshooting steps include the Task Manager shortcut.
Reduce browser resource use
Close tabs, apps, and windows you are not using. If tabs repeatedly reload, memory pressure may be involved; Google recommends reducing open tabs and reviewing extensions. Turn off extensions you do not need, restart the Chromebook, and check whether the behavior changes. Treat that as a test, not proof that an extension caused the slowdown. Google’s guidance for repeated tab reloads covers these steps.

If only websites or downloads are slow, check the connection
Check whether the Chromebook is connected to the intended network and whether network speed is also poor on other devices. Samsung’s connection guidance also points to Drive sync, DNS settings, open tabs, and Task Manager as factors to consider. These are checks for connection problems, not a guaranteed fix for every kind of system slowness. Samsung’s network troubleshooting page provides its recommended connection checks.

When to contact support or reset
Contact Samsung support if the basic steps do not resolve persistent slowness, or if a Diagnostics CPU or memory test fails. A Powerwash restores the Chromebook to its default settings, so back up important data before using it. A reset is not the first step for an unexplained slowdown: check updates and resource use first. Google likewise recommends contacting the manufacturer if troubleshooting does not resolve a slow Chromebook.
