Your room can stay humid because drying clothes moves water from the fabric into the air; it does not remove that water from your home. If ventilation does not carry the moisture outside—or a dehumidifier does not collect it—the humidity can build up. Cool windows and walls make condensation more likely. Laundry may be part of the problem, but persistent damp can have other causes too.
Why drying clothes can leave a room humid
As wet clothes dry, their water evaporates into the room. Unless that moisture is then removed, it remains indoors. The UK Government’s ventilation guide for homes in England, updated 24 March 2026, identifies washing clothes as one of the everyday activities that adds moisture to indoor air. Aberdeenshire Council’s 2024 leaflet estimates that indoor clothes drying can add 10 to 15 litres of water a week. That is a local council estimate on a weekly basis, not a measurement for every household or each load.

Moisture can collect on cold surfaces: when moist air meets a cold window, wall, or pipe, condensation can form. Poor ventilation lets moisture accumulate, while cold rooms and surfaces make condensation more likely. Corners, cupboards, and spaces behind furniture may be affected more because air moves less freely there.
Drying clothes in a room with the door closed can limit how much moisture spreads through the home, but it does not remove moisture from that room. The drying space still needs ventilation to the outdoors or another way to remove moisture.

How to tell whether laundry is the only source
Humidity can also rise through ordinary activities such as showering, cooking, and dishwashing, as well as from moisture produced by people in the home. If the problem continues when no laundry is drying, consider those sources, whether ventilation is working, and whether there could be a leak or another building moisture problem. Window condensation is a useful warning sign, but it does not identify the source by itself.
No remote description can establish the cause in a particular home. Recurring damp or mould, or moisture that persists despite changes to drying and ventilation, deserves a broader investigation rather than being assumed to be a laundry-only issue.

What to do, in order
- Reduce moisture entering the room. Dry clothes outdoors when practical. Otherwise, use one separate room, such as a bathroom, rather than spreading wet laundry around the home. Avoid drying clothes on radiators.
- Ventilate the drying room. Close its door to limit moisture spreading, and open a window or run an extractor fan to move moist air outside. A closed door without ventilation can leave moisture trapped in the room.
- Keep intended ventilation routes clear. Do not block trickle vents or other ventilation openings. Run and maintain bathroom or kitchen extractor fans where relevant. The UK Government guide advises leaving trickle vents open even in winter; that guide applies to England.
- Clear visible condensation. Wipe it from windows and other surfaces. This removes the water sitting on those surfaces, but you still need to reduce the moisture source and improve moisture removal to address the cause.
- Check humidity instead of relying only on how the room feels. A humidity meter, also called a hygrometer, gives a relative-humidity (RH) reading. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping indoor RH below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50% if possible. Treat this as general guidance, not a guarantee against condensation: outdoor conditions and cold surfaces also matter.
- Use a dehumidifier if ventilation is impractical or not enough. Choose a mechanical unit suitable for the room and its operating conditions. It collects moisture after it enters the home; unlike drying clothes outdoors, it does not prevent that moisture from entering the room in the first place. The cited guidance does not endorse a particular model.
- Keep rooms evenly warm where feasible. This can reduce the number of cold surfaces where condensation forms, but heating is not a replacement for removing moisture.
- Investigate ongoing moisture. Check for leaks and consider other moisture sources or inadequate ventilation. Renters should report leaks and persistent moisture problems to the property owner or manager. Hidden or recurring problems may need qualified investigation.
Choosing the right fix

Condensation is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. If you continue to see damp or mould, or humidity remains high after changing how laundry is dried and improving ventilation, check for other sources and leaks rather than relying on a single remedy.
