What’s actually slowing this PC down?

PlayStation Network sign-in usually fails for one of five reasons: a PSN service interruption, a wrong or unverified sign-in ID or password, a passkey or 2-step verification problem, an account restriction or recovery issue, or a console or home-network fault. The quickest way to find yours is to work through them in order. Check PSN status first, then test whether your account works online, and only then change console or network settings.
Work out which branch you’re on
PlayStation Support’s own guidance says you need two things to sign in: an account and an internet connection. Those two requirements split the problem in half. Either the account side is failing (credentials, verification, restrictions) or the connection side is failing (PSN itself, your console, your network). These questions tell you which:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Scope: Does PlayStation’s status page show an outage, or is only your account or console affected?
- Account versus device: Can you sign in to Account Management in a browser or on another device?
- Failure stage: Does it stop at the password or passkey, at the 2-step code, or at a network step?
- Error code: Is there a code such as WS-116329-2 on screen? Write it down exactly.
- Connection type: Does a wired connection behave differently from Wi-Fi?
These are diagnostic questions, not a ranking. PlayStation’s official sources give no figures on which cause is most common, so none are claimed here.
Step 1: Check whether PSN is down
Open PlayStation’s official service status page and look at the service you’re trying to use. Status changes quickly, so use the live page, not a search snippet or an old report saying “all services running.” If a service is flagged, no setting on your side will fix it. Wait for PlayStation to report recovery, then try again.

- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
Step 2: Check your sign-in ID and password
- Verify the sign-in ID email. PlayStation’s sign-in guide says to confirm the email is verified. Search that inbox, including spam, for the PlayStation verification email.
- Reset a forgotten password or unusable passkey. Use PlayStation’s password reset or account recovery guide rather than guessing repeatedly.
- Use the Online Assistant for harder cases. PlayStation directs you there if you forgot the sign-in email, can’t access that email, forgot your account verification information, or see account details changed without your permission.
On PS5, the error reference describes WS-116329-2 as a sign-in ID or password mismatch, so that code points here.
Step 3: Fix 2-step verification problems
Treat a missing verification code as its own problem:

- Select Resend Code and wait a few minutes.
- Restart your phone.
- Make sure airplane mode is off and you have mobile signal.
- Enter the code promptly. It is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.
- If you saved backup codes, use one. PlayStation says there are 10, and each works only once.
If you have neither the phone number nor backup codes, contact PlayStation Support. There is no legitimate way to bypass verification yourself. WS-117224-7 is described in the PS5 error reference as a possible 2-step verification setting problem.

Try signing in to Account Management online. If that fails too, the problem is the account, not your console. PlayStation notes that a suspended account can’t sign in, so follow its account recovery guidance. If someone changed your account details without permission, or you’ve lost access to the linked email, you need support-assisted recovery. Console tweaks won’t help.

- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Step 5: If the account works online, check the console and network
- Restart the console and your router.
- Confirm the console reports an internet connection.
- Install any available system software update.
- If you’re on Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection. PlayStation suggests this as a test. Any standard Ethernet cable will do, and the official source recommends no particular brand.
Code-specific example: WS-115338-1
PlayStation’s page for WS-115338-1 says to check PSN status first. If PSN is active, reset the console’s network settings and test again. If that fails, turn off the modem and router for five minutes before restarting them. The five-minute wait belongs to this code’s instructions, not to every sign-in failure.

| Code | What PlayStation’s PS5 error reference says | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| WS-116329-2 | Sign-in ID or password mismatch | Step 2 |
| WS-117224-7 | Possible 2-step verification setting problem | Step 3 |
| NW-102417-5 | Network timeout | Step 5 |
Look up your own code in PlayStation’s current error-code listing and follow its instructions. Don’t apply one code’s fix to an unrelated error.
