Fast battery loss usually has a specific cause: demanding screen use, a background app or system task, weak cellular coverage, heat, a recent update or setup, or an aging or damaged battery. Start with your phone’s built-in Battery usage screen before closing every app or resetting the device. It shows whether the charge is being spent on the display, an app, signal searching, notifications, or background activity.
First, confirm what kind of drain you have
There is no universal “normal” percentage loss per hour. Gaming, navigation, video recording, 5G coverage, screen brightness, refresh rate, temperature, battery age and recent setup all change runtime.
- Heavy-use drain: charge falls during gaming, streaming, navigation, camera use, hotspot use or video calls.
- Idle drain: the phone loses a substantial amount while the screen is mostly off.
- Sudden drain: the change follows an update, new app, network change or temperature event.
- Short runtime from an old battery: the phone behaves consistently but lasts much less than it did when new.
These patterns point to different fixes. A game using a lot of power while open may be normal; a little-known app using power in the background while the phone is idle is more suspicious.
Find the process using the battery
iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Battery.
- Review any Suggestions or Insights above the chart.
- Inspect Daily Usage, compare the current day with the previous seven days where available, and tap View All Battery Usage or an activity for details.
- Look for Background Activity, No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal, repeated notifications, high screen use, or an app installed or updated when the problem began.

Android
- On many phones, open Settings → Battery → Battery usage.
- On some Samsung Galaxy models, use Settings → Battery and device care → Battery.
- On supported Pixel phones, open Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics and choose Battery draining too quickly when offered.
- Review foreground use, background use, screen, mobile network, location and system entries. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Google notes that some Pixel troubleshooting steps require Android 14 or later and that diagnostics vary by model: Pixel battery-drain help. Android’s general battery guidance is available at How to save battery life.
How to read the battery screen
- Screen or Display: expected to be high after extensive screen-on time. Brightness, always-on display and high refresh rates increase it.
- An open game, camera or streaming app: high use can be legitimate rather than a fault.
- Background activity: more concerning when it is high while the screen is off or the phone is warm.
- No mobile coverage or low signal: indicates that the modem is working hard to maintain service; it does not by itself prove a bad battery.
- Notifications: frequent alerts can repeatedly wake the phone.
- System, OS or setup: may rise temporarily after an update, restore, migration or indexing process.
Compare the result with your own normal pattern. A percentage alone cannot distinguish normal heavy use from abnormal idle activity.
Fast, reversible fixes
Reduce display power
- Turn on automatic or adaptive brightness and lower brightness when practical.
- Shorten Auto-Lock or screen timeout.
- Disable always-on display if you do not need it.
- Use adaptive or lower refresh rate where your phone provides that option.
- Dark mode may reduce power on some OLED screens, but savings vary by display technology and app.
Apple specifically recommends Auto-Brightness, Auto-Lock and reducing high brightness when its Battery screen identifies them as relevant.
Use a temporary power-saving mode
On iPhone, use Settings → Battery → Power Mode → Low Power Mode. It reduces or disables features such as Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh and some visual effects, and turns off automatically after the phone charges above 80%. On Android, enable Battery Saver or the manufacturer’s power-saving mode. These modes can delay synchronization, reduce performance or limit background activity, so treat them as practical short-term tools rather than proof of a fault.

Restart and update
Restart the phone, install pending operating-system updates and update apps. A restart can end a stuck process; an update may fix a known app or system bug.
Fix a runaway app
An app is a stronger suspect when drain began after it was installed or updated, its background use is unusually high, or the phone stays warm while idle.

- Update the app.
- Force-close it on iPhone, or use Settings → Apps and Force stop on Android, as a one-time diagnostic.
- Review its background-data, location, notification and sync permissions. Restrict background activity for a nonessential app if your phone offers that control.
- Reinstall it if its usage remains abnormal.
- Uninstall it temporarily and compare idle drain. If the problem disappears, contact the developer or use an alternative.
Do not routinely force-close every app. A high-use app may simply reflect how much you used it, and aggressive restrictions can delay notifications, location sharing, widgets or synchronization.
Weak signal, 5G and network searching
Drain often worsens in basements, rural areas, airports, large buildings and while traveling. Maintaining a connection in weak coverage can use more energy than a strong connection, even when the screen is off.

- Move to a location with stronger reception.
- Turn on Airplane Mode temporarily when cellular service is unavailable and you do not need calls or mobile data. You can enable Wi-Fi separately.
- Turn off hotspot when finished.
- On a compatible iPhone, choose Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data → 5G Auto. Supported devices include iPhone 12 models and later, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and 5G-capable iPads.
- Test Wi-Fi Calling if your carrier and device support it.
5G is not automatically a battery problem. The effect depends on the modem, carrier, signal conditions, workload and settings. Apple’s battery guidance explains the relationship between Wi-Fi, signal strength and 5G Auto.
Location, camera, hotspot, streaming and games
GPS navigation, continuous location tracking, video recording, mobile hotspot, cellular video calls, large cloud transfers, high-volume audio and 3D games are legitimate high-power activities.
- Set location access to While Using unless an app genuinely needs continuous access.
- Download maps or media for offline use when practical.
- Use Wi-Fi for large downloads and streaming.
- Reduce game graphics, frame rate or resolution when available.
- Stop navigation, recording and hotspot sessions when finished.
- Turn off Bluetooth only when it is not needed; Bluetooth alone is not always a major drain.
If the drain started after an update or setup
Updates, restores and migrations can continue indexing files, syncing photos, rebuilding search data and completing other background work. The phone may be warm and show elevated system activity even when no ordinary app is responsible.
- Install any follow-up system and app updates.
- Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi when appropriate.
- Restart it and recheck Battery usage after the background work has finished.
- If the phone otherwise behaves normally, allow several days before concluding that the update permanently reduced battery life.
- Escalate through the manufacturer’s diagnostics if severe drain continues.
Apple explicitly recommends waiting and checking again after update-related activity. Android behavior differs among Pixel, Galaxy and other manufacturers, so do not assume every model settles in the same way.

Check battery health and age
iPhone indicators
For iPhone 15 and later, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. For iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. A Service message, repeated unexpected shutdowns or a substantially reduced capacity indicates that replacement should be considered. Apple’s service information is at Battery Service and Recycling.
Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% at 1,000 cycles, under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not a universal replacement rule or guarantee for an individual phone.
Android indicators
Android battery-health reporting and replacement thresholds vary by manufacturer. Use Pixel Battery Diagnostics where supported, or the battery and device-care tools supplied by your phone maker. A phone that shuts down at 20% or 30%, remains poor after software and signal checks, or powers off shortly after startup may have an aged or damaged battery. Samsung’s symptoms and support steps are listed at Galaxy phone or tablet is not staying on or holding a charge.
Battery health and runtime are separate diagnoses: a healthy battery can drain quickly during gaming or weak-signal use, while a worn battery can provide poor runtime even when no app is misbehaving.

Heat accelerates long-term battery degradation and can trigger temporary performance or charging restrictions. It may also signal intensive processing, poor reception, a charging problem or battery damage. Move the phone out of direct sun or a hot car, stop demanding apps and let it cool naturally. Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer.
Cold can cause a temporary percentage drop or shutdown; behavior may improve after the phone returns to a normal temperature. Google warns that high temperatures can quickly degrade battery health in its Android battery guidance.

Separate charging problems from short runtime
A phone can discharge quickly because its capacity is worn, or it can fail to charge properly because of the cable, charger, port or wireless-charging setup.
- Try a known-good, standards-compliant cable and charger.
- Inspect the charging port for visible debris. Clean only carefully and without metal tools or liquid.
- If wireless charging is unreliable, test wired charging and ensure the phone is aligned correctly.
- Check whether the percentage rises while the phone is idle. Heavy use during charging can make it appear not to charge.
- Stop charging if the device becomes abnormally hot, swells or smells unusual.
Lithium-ion batteries have finite cycle life. Overnight charging does not automatically destroy a modern phone, but heat, age and sustained high charge can affect long-term health. Device-specific optimized-charging or charge-limit features are optional longevity tools, not immediate cures for active drain. See Apple’s general battery information at Apple Batteries.
Use this symptom-based decision tree
Drain mainly while the phone is in use
Check display brightness and refresh rate, demanding apps, hotspot use, cellular data and signal. Compare one normal-use day after changing the most obvious factor.
Drain while idle or overnight
Review background activity, notifications, location and synchronization. Test Airplane Mode overnight as a diagnostic: a large improvement points toward cellular searching or network conditions. Check whether the phone remains warm and run battery-health diagnostics.
Shutdown at a nonzero percentage
Suspect battery aging, damage, inaccurate reporting or extreme temperature. Do not repeatedly drain the battery to zero as a “calibration” cure; arrange professional service if the behavior repeats.
Swelling, smoke, leakage or dangerous heat
Stop using and charging the phone. Do not puncture, press, freeze or attempt an unqualified battery removal. Move away from heat and arrange manufacturer or qualified repair service; smoke or fire is an emergency.

When to replace the battery or the phone
Choose battery service when diagnostics indicate poor condition, the phone otherwise meets your needs and the repair is reasonable for its age. Check the exact model, warranty, AppleCare or carrier protection and the US service location; repair prices vary.
Consider replacing the phone when it needs several repairs, no longer receives security updates, has serious water, display, charging-port or motherboard problems, or a battery replacement would not solve its main limitation. Apple directs users to Apple or authorized providers for built-in battery service. Pixel and Galaxy owners should use their manufacturer’s diagnostics and support before paying for a replacement.
What not to do
- Do not install task-killer, cleaner or “battery booster” apps as a default remedy; they can add background activity.
- Do not assume 5G always causes drain or Bluetooth is always a major cause.
- Do not treat every battery below 80% as requiring immediate replacement, especially on Android.
- Do not blame every software update; temporary post-update work and model-specific bugs are different situations.
- Do not factory-reset before backing up photos, messages, authenticator data, passwords, eSIM details and app data. A reset is a last resort and cannot restore worn battery capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my phone lose battery overnight?
Check Battery usage for background apps, notifications, synchronization, location and low-signal activity. An Airplane Mode overnight test can distinguish cellular searching from other causes; also check battery health and whether the phone stays warm.
Should I drain the battery to zero to calibrate it?
No. Repeated full-discharge cycles are not a general fix for sudden drain and add wear. Use the phone’s battery-health diagnostics and seek service for repeated shutdowns at nonzero percentages.
Does closing every app save battery?
No. Investigate the app identified by Battery usage instead. Force-stopping or restricting one abnormal background app can help, but routinely closing everything is inconvenient and may not reduce drain.
Is a factory reset worth trying?
Only as a last resort after updates, app testing, signal checks and battery diagnostics. Back up all important data first, confirm account credentials and test the phone before restoring every app.
