Note your operating system and laptop model, and distinguish a slow but ultimately successful startup from a freeze, crash, error, or failure to boot. Those symptoms need different troubleshooting paths.
Find which part of startup is slow
Watch the next startup rather than treating every delay as a boot-time problem. Note when the laptop begins responding normally: before the sign-in screen, while signing in, or after the desktop loads. If it reaches the desktop but takes a while to become usable, background apps or resource use may be more relevant than the time it takes to reach sign-in.
Also record the laptop model and whether it runs Windows or macOS. A successful but slow startup is different from a device that freezes, crashes, displays an error, or never loads the operating system. Microsoft groups Windows startup failures into crashes or bug checks, no-boot situations, and freezes; those call for its startup troubleshooting guidance, not just routine performance tuning.
Fix a slow Windows startup
Start with reversible checks built into Windows. They can uncover common causes, but Microsoft does not promise a particular reduction in startup time from any one step. Its guidance notes that “Apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.” See Microsoft’s startup-app guidance.

Disable only nonessential startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the list and disable apps you do not need to launch automatically. Leave unfamiliar or essential items alone until you know what they do.
- Restart and see whether the delay changes.
Check storage, updates, and security
- Check available storage. If space is low, use Windows Storage Sense or another built-in cleanup option to remove temporary files.
- Install available Windows updates. Consider optional driver updates when they are appropriate for your laptop.
- Run a malware scan with Windows Security.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use.
These are first-line checks, not guaranteed fixes. Several factors can contribute to slow startup, so change one thing at a time where practical and observe the result.
Look for a resource bottleneck
In Task Manager, review CPU, memory, disk, and startup-app activity. High or sustained use can help identify what is keeping the laptop busy after startup. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes just because they appear in the list; doing so can disrupt Windows or an app.

Use a clean boot to investigate background conflicts
If ordinary checks do not explain the delay, a clean boot can help determine whether a third-party service or startup app is involved. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure carefully:
- Open System Configuration and, on the Services tab, select the option to hide all Microsoft services before disabling third-party services.
- Disable the remaining services, then disable startup apps in Task Manager.
- Restart and test whether startup improves.
- If it does, re-enable items systematically to identify the conflict. Testing half the items at a time can reduce the number of restarts needed.
- When testing is complete, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions.
Clean boot changes system behavior while you troubleshoot. On a managed computer, network policies or workplace rules may affect these steps; follow your IT department’s guidance.

Fix a slow Mac startup
Test login items if the delay is around sign-in
Apple notes that login items can cause startup problems. Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, record the listed items, and remove them for a test. Restart. If the problem is gone, add the items back one at a time, restarting as needed, to find which one is associated with the delay. Apple’s instructions are at Add or remove login items on Mac.
Check the startup disk if the delay happens earlier
If the delay occurs before login, or the Mac shows a flashing question mark, open System Settings > General > Startup Disk and check that the intended startup disk is selected. A progress bar beneath the Apple logo can mean macOS is checking the disk. Apple explains these signs and next steps in If your Mac starts up to a question mark.

Test connected accessories
Disconnect USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and other accessories, then start the Mac again. If startup is normal, reconnect one device at a time, restarting between tests. If one accessory brings the delay back, consult its manufacturer. Apple includes peripherals among the possible causes in its startup troubleshooting guidance.

A laptop that repeatedly freezes, crashes, or fails to boot needs recovery or support guidance for that specific symptom—not repeated startup-app cleanup. Before using Windows recovery, back up important files if possible and check what the selected option will keep or remove. Resets and reinstalls differ in whether they retain files, apps, and settings; reinstalling Windows from installation media may remove data. Start with Microsoft’s recovery options and read the consequences of the option you choose. A recovery USB is a fallback when normal recovery is unavailable, not a general speed-up tool.

For a Mac that cannot start normally, use Apple’s support guidance for the exact screen or error rather than applying the login-item steps as a substitute for recovery.
When software changes do not help
Software cleanup may not materially improve an older laptop or one limited by its hardware. The evidence here does not establish a general RAM or SSD upgrade as the right remedy. Check the laptop model, current configuration, and actual resource bottleneck before considering hardware changes; compatibility and benefit depend on the specific device.
