1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn Epson EcoTank that feeds paper but prints a completely blank sheet usually has a problem in one of four places: the document or print settings, ink supply, clogged or missing printhead nozzles, or paper handling. Work through those possibilities in that order. First inspect print preview and the selected printer, then check the visible tank levels, print a nozzle-check pattern, clean the printhead only when that pattern shows missing lines, and finally verify the paper and feeding conditions.
The exact maintenance names and menu paths differ between EcoTank generations and regions. Use the instructions for your model—such as the ET-3850, ET-4850, ET-2988, ET-5150/5170 or L4260—rather than assuming that one control-panel sequence or cleaning limit applies to every printer.

Start with the symptom: what is actually blank?
“Blank page” can describe several different failures. Identifying the pattern prevents you from cleaning a printhead when the real problem is a document setting, or buying ink when the printer is not receiving a printable page.

| Pages from every application are blank, and the nozzle-check pattern is also missing or empty | Check tank levels, then run the model’s nozzle check and follow its head-cleaning procedure if lines are missing | A poor pattern indicates an ink-delivery or nozzle issue, but the exact cause still requires the model’s maintenance instructions. |

| A printer status page or test pattern prints, but a particular file does not | Return to the application’s preview, page range and printer selection | The printer can produce output, so the file or its print settings deserve priority. |
Use the sequence below even if you think you already know the cause. A tank can be full while a document is configured incorrectly, and a perfect document cannot print correctly through blocked nozzles.

1. Check the document and print settings
Epson’s blank-page guidance starts with the source file and print dialog because a printer may be doing exactly what it was asked to do. A blank page in the file, an excluded page range or a different printer selected in the dialog can look like a hardware failure.
Inspect print preview
- Open the document in the application that created it.
- Choose Print and look at the application’s preview, not just the physical sheet.
- Move through every page in the preview. If the preview itself contains a blank page, inspect page breaks, hidden content and the selected print range in the document.
- If only some pages are blank in preview, print a range containing a page that visibly has content. This separates a source-file problem from a printer-wide problem.
Preview labels differ among word processors, PDF viewers and graphics programs, but the useful test is the same: determine whether the application is sending content for the page that comes out blank.
Confirm the destination printer
In the print dialog, make sure the intended Epson EcoTank is selected. Computers often retain old printer queues, another network printer or a virtual PDF printer. A job sent to the wrong queue can finish without the EcoTank ever receiving the expected page.

- Set the paper size to the size loaded in the tray.
- Choose the intended orientation, portrait or landscape.
- Check the layout, pages-per-sheet and scaling options. An unusual layout can place content outside the printable area or create apparently empty pages.
- Review the page range and copies setting so that the application is not sending unintended blank pages.
Print a single known-good page after correcting these settings. If that page is still blank, continue to the printer-side checks rather than repeatedly resending the same job.
2. Check the EcoTank’s visible ink levels
Look directly at each ink tank and compare the level with the model’s marked range. Epson lists low ink as one possible cause of blank output. If a tank is low, refill it only with a bottle identified as compatible with the exact EcoTank model.

Why a refill is not a universal cure
Adding ink cannot correct a blank page caused by a wrong printer selection, a blank source page or an unsuitable paper setting. It also does not automatically clear a blocked nozzle. Check the file and settings first, and run a nozzle check after verifying the tanks.
Use the model number when selecting ink
EcoTank bottles are not interchangeable by appearance alone. Read the model number on the printer and match the bottle to that model’s documentation. The relevant support material covers different families, including the ET-3850, ET-4850, ET-2988, ET-5150/5170 and L4260; their consumables and instructions may differ. Do not buy a generic bottle or rely on a listing that omits your exact model.
If the levels look adequate, do not treat the tanks as ruled out forever, but move to the nozzle check. The pattern provides more useful evidence about whether ink is reaching the page.
3. Print a nozzle-check pattern before cleaning
A nozzle check is the safest diagnostic step for separating an ink-delivery problem from a document problem. It prints a built-in pattern independent of your document. Missing lines, broken segments or an empty pattern indicate that the printer is not delivering ink through all expected nozzles.
Find the nozzle-check command
Use the printer’s maintenance menu or the Epson printer utility on your computer. The wording may be Nozzle Check, Print Head Nozzle Check or a similar label, and the location varies by model and region. If you cannot find it, open the support documentation for the exact model instead of following a sequence from another EcoTank generation.

- Load the paper type and size specified for ordinary printing in your model’s instructions.
- Open the maintenance or utility menu and select the nozzle-check function.
- Print the pattern and examine every grid, line or color segment under good light.
- Compare the result with the example shown in your model’s manual or on-screen instructions.
Interpret the result
- Complete, unbroken pattern: The nozzles are producing the expected pattern. Return to the document, printer selection and print settings; a blank document job is more likely than a blocked nozzle.
- Gaps, broken lines or missing colors: Follow the model’s printhead-cleaning instruction, then print another nozzle check.
- Almost no pattern or a completely blank pattern: Verify that the tanks contain ink and use the exact model’s maintenance guidance. Do not assume that repeated cleaning cycles or a refill alone will solve it.
4. Clean the printhead only when the pattern calls for it
Epson’s troubleshooting directions pair the nozzle check with printhead cleaning when the pattern shows missing nozzles. Cleaning uses ink, so it should be a response to the diagnostic pattern rather than the first action for every blank page.
Follow the exact model procedure
Select the built-in head-cleaning function from the printer’s maintenance menu or Epson utility. Models vary in their button names, prompts and follow-up instructions. The cited Epson material does not establish one universal cleaning-cycle limit or one control-panel sequence for every EcoTank generation, so do not apply a number copied from another model.
- Start the model-specific cleaning command.
- Allow the printer to finish; interrupting the cycle can leave the maintenance operation incomplete.
- Print another nozzle-check pattern when the instructions tell you to do so.
- Compare the new pattern with the previous one. If lines remain missing, use only the next step permitted by that model’s documentation.
Avoid unapproved cleaning products
The Epson guidance cited for these models directs owners to the built-in nozzle check and cleaning utility. It does not call for generic printhead-cleaning liquids, syringes or other tools. Introducing fluids or tools not specified for the printer can create a separate failure and may damage the ink system.
If the pattern does not improve after following the exact instructions, stop escalating the cleaning on your own. A persistently poor pattern needs model-specific support rather than unlimited cycles.

Paper usually cannot explain a perfectly blank page when the printer’s own nozzle-check pattern is healthy, but unsuitable or badly handled paper can contribute to feeding and output problems. Confirm that the stock is supported for your EcoTank and is dry.

Paper checks that apply especially to the ET-2988
The ET-2988 FAQ advises replacing damp paper, fanning the sheets and trying one sheet at a time if feeding problems continue. It also calls for placing the printer on a stable, flat surface. These are model-specific instructions, not a guaranteed universal checklist for every EcoTank.
- Remove paper that feels damp, curled or otherwise unsuitable and load a fresh stack supported by your model.
- Fan the sheets to separate them before loading.
- If the printer still misfeeds, try feeding one sheet at a time, as the ET-2988 guidance recommends.
- Make sure the printer sits flat and stable, and that guides are positioned as described in the model manual.
After changing paper, print a small test or nozzle check. If the test pattern is normal but a document remains blank, return to the application’s settings rather than continuing to adjust the paper.
Use the evidence to choose the next step
| Evidence | Next action | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Blank output occurs only from one application or file | Inspect preview, page range, layout, paper size, orientation and selected printer | That the printhead is clogged |
| All jobs are blank and tank levels are visibly low | Obtain a bottle matched to the exact EcoTank model, then run a nozzle check | That refilling will repair a settings error or nozzle blockage |
| Nozzle check has missing segments | Use the model’s built-in cleaning function and print the pattern again | That repeated cleaning is unlimited or identical across models |
| Nozzle check is complete but the document is blank | Recheck the source document and print dialog | That the printer hardware has failed |
| Feeding is inconsistent and paper is damp or sticks together | Replace the paper, fan it and test one sheet at a time; follow model-specific guidance | That every EcoTank uses the ET-2988 procedure |
Why menu instructions differ between EcoTank models
EcoTank is a product family, not one identical printer. The official material for the ET-3850, ET-4850, ET-2988, ET-5150/5170 and L4260 overlaps on the core diagnosis—settings, ink, nozzle check and cleaning—but the screen labels, utility layout and maintenance prompts are not guaranteed to match.
Before pressing a maintenance button, identify the complete model number from the printer’s label or its status screen. Then use that model’s user guide or support page. Also account for regional variations: a menu translated for one market may use different wording from an otherwise similar printer sold elsewhere.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Epson
Escalate when a nozzle-check pattern remains poor after you have followed the exact model’s maintenance instructions, or when the printer continues to produce blank sheets despite a correct file, correct printer selection, adequate ink and suitable paper. Epson support can provide the procedure for that specific model and identify whether service is appropriate.
Have the full model number and a description of what you observed ready. The most useful details are:
- Whether the blank page came from one file or every application.
- Whether print preview showed content.
- The visible ink levels and the bottle model used for any refill.
- The result of the latest nozzle-check pattern.
- Whether the paper was dry, supported and feeding normally.
The available Epson guidance does not establish a universal repair price or a single service threshold for all EcoTank printers. If built-in checks do not resolve the problem, use Epson’s exact-model support channel or an authorized repair provider rather than guessing at a part replacement.
Quick Recap
A concise recovery checklist
- Open print preview and confirm that the source page contains content.
- Verify paper size, orientation, layout, page range and the selected EcoTank.
- Inspect the tanks and refill only if the level is low, using ink matched to the exact model.
- Print a nozzle-check pattern.
- If the pattern has gaps, run the model-specific head-cleaning utility and print another pattern.
- Use supported, dry paper; replace damp sheets, fan the stack and try one sheet at a time when the model’s instructions call for it.
- Contact Epson support for the exact model if the pattern stays poor or blank pages continue despite these checks.
