A computer that suddenly becomes sluggish usually has a detectable bottleneck: a process consuming CPU, memory or disk; too many startup programs; insufficient storage; outdated software; malware; a disk problem; or hardware that no longer meets current demands. Check those causes in that order before resetting the computer. The early checks are reversible and cost nothing, while recovery, reinstallation and hardware replacement can remove data or require new equipment.

First, define exactly what is slow

“Slow” can describe several different problems. Write down what you observe and when it started before changing settings.

Slow during startup

If Windows takes a long time to reach the desktop, inspect startup applications first. A recent driver, update or newly installed program can also add work during boot. If the computer cannot start normally at all, skip to the recovery section and use Startup Repair or System Restore rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.

Slow everywhere

Sluggish windows, delayed typing and long waits in several programs usually indicate a system-wide CPU, memory, disk, storage or malware issue. Task Manager can show which resource is being exhausted.

Only one application is slow

An application-specific problem points toward that program’s update status, settings, files or add-ons rather than the whole computer. Close other programs, restart the affected application and check whether the slowdown remains. If other applications respond normally, do not disable system-wide services or reset Windows as a first response.

Only web browsing, gaming or video is slow

A browser problem can be isolated to tabs, extensions or cached data. Gaming and video workloads can expose limited RAM, graphics capability, storage speed or thermal limits that ordinary office work does not. Compare behavior in another application before making a system-wide change.

Sudden versus gradual slowdown

A sudden change after an installation or update deserves a review of recent software, startup entries and drivers. A gradual decline often reflects a nearly full drive, accumulating background programs, aging storage or hardware that no longer meets the demands of current software. A sudden and unexplained change accompanied by unusual resource use is also a reason to run a malware scan.

Why computers become slow

Microsoft identifies five broad categories that account for many Windows performance complaints:

  • Limited storage: A nearly full system drive leaves less working space for Windows and applications. It can also interfere with malware scanning.
  • Too many startup or background applications: Programs that launch with Windows consume CPU, memory and disk time before you open anything.
  • Outdated software or drivers: Updates can include bug fixes and performance improvements, while old drivers can cause instability or inefficient hardware operation.
  • Malware: Unwanted software can run continuously, use processor or memory resources and change normal system behavior.
  • Hardware that is past its practical limit: Older computers with limited RAM, a slow or failing drive, or unsupported components may not improve much through software cleanup.

These causes can overlap. For example, a full drive can make scanning slower, while a failing drive can look like a memory or application problem because every operation waits on storage.

Fix a slow Windows PC step by step

1. Measure the bottleneck in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. On Processes, select the CPU, Memory and Disk columns one at a time to sort by usage.
  3. Look for a process that remains at the top while the computer is slow. Note its name and whether the high use is continuous or ends after a task finishes.
  4. On Performance, watch CPU, memory and disk graphs for a minute while reproducing the delay. A single brief spike is less significant than a resource that stays saturated.

Do not end a process merely because its name is unfamiliar. Search for the program’s installed location or identify the application first; ending a Windows component can cause data loss or instability. Close a program normally whenever possible.

2. Reduce startup load without disabling essential software

  1. In Task Manager, open Startup apps.
  2. Review each entry’s name, publisher and Startup impact.
  3. Right-click only an item you recognize as nonessential and choose Disable. Leave security software, hardware utilities and work-critical sync tools enabled unless you know their consequences.
  4. Restart and compare boot time and responsiveness. Re-enable an item if a required feature stops working.

Microsoft’s example of a medium startup impact is 300 milliseconds–1000 milliseconds of CPU time or up to 3 MB of disk activity at startup. The label describes startup work, not a guaranteed delay on every computer, so use it to prioritize entries rather than as a promise of a specific speed gain.

3. Close unnecessary background work

Quit programs you are not using, especially launchers, synchronization tools, browsers with many tabs and media applications. Check Task Manager again after closing them. If memory use falls and the computer responds normally, reopen programs one at a time to identify the workload that creates the problem.

4. Install Windows and driver updates, then restart

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
  2. Check Advanced options > Optional updates for available driver updates, reviewing the device name before installing.
  3. Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it. Some fixes and driver changes take effect only after a restart.

Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, but a newly installed update can also coincide with a problem. If the slowdown began immediately afterward, note the update date and test again after a full restart before attempting recovery.

5. Free space with Storage Sense

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
  2. Review temporary files and other categories before removal. Delete only files you understand, and preserve downloads, project files and anything needed for recovery.
  3. Enable Storage Sense or run it manually according to your storage needs.

Windows can also offer temporary-file cleanup from the Storage page. A drive that is nearly full can slow ordinary work and leave too little space for security tools to quarantine detected files. Cleanup is low risk when every category is reviewed, but it is not a substitute for replacing a failing drive.

6. Scan for malware when the change is unexplained

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  2. Install available security intelligence updates, then start a scan. Use a fuller scan when the symptoms are persistent or unusual.
  3. Let the scan finish and follow Windows Security’s instructions for any detection. Do not run several real-time security products simultaneously.

Microsoft notes that scans use processor and memory resources and need disk space for quarantine. If a scan is unusually slow or fails, close other programs, restart Windows, update Defender, free storage and try again. A restart or offline scan may be necessary when active software prevents normal remediation. A very slow device can be a malware symptom, but slowness alone does not prove an infection.

7. Check the disk and startup path

Persistent freezes, file-operation delays, unexplained application errors or a drive that repeatedly reaches 100 percent activity justify a disk-health check. Back up important files before any repair that could make a failing drive worse. If Windows will not boot, use the recovery environment’s Startup Repair for startup faults. Use System Restore when a recent driver or software change appears responsible and a restore point exists.

Do not edit the Windows registry as a generic speed fix. Registry changes can prevent Windows or applications from starting; make a backup and have a clear recovery plan before changing a value for a documented reason.

Mac: reclaim startup-disk space and check the disk

Free space on the startup disk

When macOS reports low storage, move large files to another disk or external storage and remove files you no longer need from the startup disk. Check the space used by videos, installers, virtual machines and old backups, but verify each file before deleting it. A portable external SSD can provide additional capacity and a destination for backups; check capacity, encryption support, connection compatibility and backup software for the specific Mac.

Verify or repair with Disk Utility

  1. Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
  2. Select the startup volume or physical disk in the sidebar.
  3. Choose First Aid, read the warning and allow Disk Utility to verify and attempt repairs.
  4. If the startup volume cannot be repaired while macOS is running, start macOS Recovery and run First Aid there. Back up first when the Mac is still usable.

Disk Utility can address directory or volume problems; it cannot add RAM or make an aging, mechanically failing drive reliable. Continued errors after repair are a reason to preserve data and seek hardware service.

When recovery or reinstallation is justified

Recovery is an escalation step, not the first response to a high Task Manager reading. Before using it, copy personal files to a separate destination and confirm that you can reinstall required applications and access their credentials.

  • Startup Repair: Use for Windows that cannot start normally. It targets boot-related problems and is less disruptive than a clean installation.
  • System Restore: Use when a recent driver or software change caused the failure and an appropriate restore point exists. It can change system files and settings without being a general performance cleaner.
  • Reset or clean installation: Consider for persistent corruption or a malware-related case after backups. Recovery choices can remove files, applications or settings; read each screen carefully and choose the option that matches your backup.

A clean installation has the highest disruption. It should follow, not replace, diagnosis of failing hardware: reinstalling Windows will not repair a defective drive, insufficient RAM or incompatible components.

Choose the least disruptive remedy first

Remedy Best indication Risk and reversibility Cost or disruption Platform
Disable a recognized nonessential startup app Slow boot and high startup activity Low risk; re-enable in Task Manager No purchase; quick restart Windows
Review temporary files with Storage Sense Low free space or a nearly full system drive Low risk when categories are reviewed No purchase; cleanup time Windows
Move files to external storage Low startup-disk space or need for a backup destination Reversible if originals are retained and backups are verified Requires compatible external storage Windows or Mac
Windows Security scan Sudden unexplained slowness or unusual resource use May require restart or offline scanning No separate purchase; scan time Windows
Disk Utility First Aid Mac file errors, freezes or disk warnings Back up first; repair can expose a failing disk No purchase; may require macOS Recovery Mac
RAM or internal-drive upgrade Software checks do not help and hardware is the constraint Compatibility and installation risk; not available on every device New hardware and possible service Windows or Mac, device dependent
Startup Repair or System Restore Windows startup failure after a system or driver change Usually reversible, but restore changes system state Recovery time; backup recommended Windows
Clean installation Persistent corruption or a malware-related case after backup Highest data, application and settings loss risk Major setup and reinstallation effort Windows

Know when hardware is the limit

If CPU, memory and disk use look normal after cleanup, updates and a malware check, but the computer remains slow, the hardware may simply be underspecified for current software. Limited RAM causes frequent waiting when several applications are open. A slow or failing internal drive makes every file operation take longer. An older processor or unsupported graphics component can limit newer games, video workloads and operating-system features.

Check the device’s upgrade documentation before buying parts. Confirm the maximum supported RAM, the drive interface and physical size, whether the battery or storage is replaceable, and whether opening the case affects service coverage. An external SSD adds capacity and backup space but does not automatically make applications faster; it helps when low capacity or a demonstrably slow internal drive is the bottleneck. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps. In those cases, upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution.”

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder

  • Disabling everything in Startup apps: This can remove required security, accessibility, hardware or synchronization features. Disable only entries you recognize and test after each change.
  • Deleting folders at random: Remove reviewed temporary files, not unknown program or system folders.
  • Running several heavy scans at once: Concurrent scans compete for CPU, memory and disk and can make the computer appear even slower.
  • Resetting before backing up: Recovery can remove files, applications and settings. Confirm the backup opens on another device.
  • Assuming a speed claim is universal: No single cleanup step has a guaranteed percentage improvement. The result depends on the diagnosed bottleneck.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Record whether the delay affects startup, every application, one application, browsing, gaming or file operations, and whether it began suddenly.
  2. Use Task Manager to identify sustained CPU, memory, disk or startup activity.
  3. Disable only recognized, nonessential startup items and restart.
  4. Install Windows, driver and application updates, then restart again.
  5. Review Storage Sense or move unneeded files off a crowded startup disk.
  6. Run Windows Security when the slowdown is sudden, unexplained or accompanied by unusual resource use; retry correctly if the scan is slow.
  7. On a Mac, free startup-disk space and run Disk Utility First Aid.
  8. Back up before Startup Repair, System Restore, reset or clean installation.
  9. If software checks do not materially help, evaluate RAM, drive health, compatibility and the age of the computer before spending money.
