Move a laptop to a hard surface, save your work, shut it down before cleaning, and investigate the cause rather than continuing to run it hot.
How to tell normal heat from overheating
Fans becoming louder and the case becoming warm during gaming, 3D rendering, video editing, large file processing, or system updates can be normal. Those tasks make the processor and graphics chip produce more heat, so the cooling system increases fan speed. A problem is more likely when heat appears at idle, the fan runs at maximum with no demanding application open, performance suddenly falls, the computer freezes or restarts, or it shuts down to protect itself.

When a processor or graphics chip reaches a high temperature, the system can reduce its clock speed to lower heat output. This protective behavior, called thermal throttling, feels like stuttering, slow exports, dropped game performance, or an otherwise hot-and-slow computer. Loud fans, slow performance, freezes, restarts, and shutdowns are all documented overheating symptoms.
- Warm during a heavy task only: first check airflow and workload, then determine whether the behavior stops when the task ends.
- Hot at idle: look for a runaway process, unwanted startup activity, blocked vents, a failed fan, or a firmware and power-profile problem.
- Immediate shutdown, burning smell, or a swollen chassis: stop using the computer and arrange professional service. Do not continue troubleshooting a possible battery or electrical fault while it is powered.
What to do immediately
- Save open work. If the system is responsive, close the demanding game, editor, browser tab, virtual machine, or update task. If it is too hot to operate normally, shut it down from the operating system; use the power button only when a normal shutdown is impossible.
- Move a laptop to a hard, flat surface. A desk or table allows the intake to breathe. Do not use it on a blanket, pillow, bed, clothing, paper, or another soft material that can cover an intake vent.
- Clear the exhaust path. Keep the rear, sides, underside, and monitor hinge area—where applicable—away from walls, books, bags, and other objects that can trap hot air. A desktop should have clear space around both front or bottom intakes and rear or top exhausts.
- Reduce the load temporarily. Pause rendering, game downloads, large updates, or data processing until you identify why temperatures rise. This limits throttling and reduces the chance of an emergency shutdown.
- Let the computer cool while powered off. Do not spray liquid, open a hot system, or immediately restart it after a protective shutdown.
These actions address the most common airflow and workload causes, but they do not repair a failed fan, damaged heatsink, degraded thermal material, or electrical problem.

Check whether a process is creating the heat
Windows
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, sort by the CPU column, then check Memory and GPU when available. Allow a few minutes of observation rather than judging from a single instant. A game, video encoder, browser tab, cloud synchronization job, installer, or update can legitimately use substantial resources. An unfamiliar process that remains near the top after you close your work deserves investigation.
Close an application from within that application first. Use End task only for a program that is frozen or clearly no longer needed; ending a system process can cause instability. If the same process returns, note its name and the application that launched it before changing anything.
macOS
Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, select the CPU tab, and inspect processes with unusually high or persistent usage. Apple specifically advises checking for malfunctioning processes that create significant CPU load and unexpected fan use. Quit a normal application from its own menu when possible; force-quit only when it is unresponsive.

Reduce unnecessary startup work
On Windows, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable entries you recognize as unnecessary, such as launchers or update helpers that do not need to start with every boot. Do not disable security, touchpad, graphics, storage, or other hardware services without knowing what they do. Reboot and check whether idle fan activity changes. If it does not, continue with airflow and hardware checks rather than disabling more services at random.

Clean blocked vents, filters, and heatsinks safely
Dust, lint, hair, and debris are the most common documented reason for an overheating computer. They restrict intake, coat fan blades, clog heatsink fins, and make the cooling system work harder. A desktop can have separate fans for the CPU, graphics card, power supply, and case, so inspect every airflow path rather than cleaning only the rear grille.
- Shut down completely. Disconnect the AC adapter or power cable and remove other connected cables. If the computer has a removable battery, remove it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect before opening anything. Look through intake and exhaust grilles, removable filters, desktop heatsinks, and fan openings for dust mats, lint, bent grilles, or a fan that is not turning when the system is later tested.
- Use canned or compressed air made for electronics. Work in a ventilated area and direct short bursts through the vents. Blow from the clean side toward the outside where the design allows, following the computer maker’s service guidance.
- Keep the system disconnected during cleaning. Do not clean a running computer. Avoid vacuum cleaners, household blowers, and blowing with your mouth; these methods can create static, force debris deeper, or introduce moisture.
- Reassemble and test. Replace filters and panels correctly, reconnect power, and observe fan behavior during a light workload before starting a demanding task.
Compressed air removes loose debris, but it cannot restore a fan with worn bearings, a detached heatsink, or thermal material that has degraded. If opening the case would void a warranty or you are not comfortable identifying components, use the manufacturer’s service route instead.
Update the software that controls cooling
Operating-system updates
Install pending operating-system updates after saving work. Updates can correct power-management and hardware-control bugs, although an update itself may temporarily increase CPU use while it installs or indexes files. Let the process finish, restart, and then reassess idle temperatures.
Drivers and BIOS or firmware
Install current drivers supplied by the computer manufacturer, especially chipset, graphics, and platform-power components. Also check for a BIOS or UEFI update in the manufacturer’s support utility or support page. Follow its battery, AC-power, and backup instructions exactly; interrupting firmware installation can leave a system unbootable.

Some models depend on Intel Dynamic Tuning or a similar platform service to coordinate power and fan behavior. Missing or outdated components, or a conflict between a BIOS thermal profile and a vendor power-management utility, can cause model-specific overheating. Use the maker’s recommended package rather than mixing generic utilities from different sources.
Thermal profiles and power modes
Check the manufacturer’s control application and the operating system’s power settings for a thermal, quiet, balanced, or performance profile. A performance mode can intentionally sustain higher CPU or GPU power and louder fans. A balanced or quiet mode may reduce heat during ordinary work, but it cannot compensate for blocked vents or a failed cooling component. Change one setting at a time and test the same workload so you can identify what helped.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics
Most computer makers provide a preboot hardware test, a support application, or a fan test. Run it after cleaning and updating, or sooner if a fan grinds, rattles, fails to spin, or stays at maximum with no load. Record the exact error code and component name shown by the test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Dell systems: the maker lists built-in hardware diagnostics and SupportAssist diagnostics as first-line checks. Use the fan, thermal, and system tests offered for your model.
- Other Windows manufacturers: use the diagnostic key or support utility documented for the exact model. A generic test may not detect a model-specific fan or heatsink fault.
- Intel-based systems: Intel advises owners of OEM computers to contact the computer manufacturer for overheating issues, check for dust and broken components, and ensure any third-party temperature utility is validated for the processor.
- Mac: persistent operating-temperature problems should be taken to Apple support or an authorized service provider, particularly when Activity Monitor does not reveal an obvious workload.
A diagnostic result that identifies a fan, heatsink, thermal-material, battery, or power fault changes the remedy from software maintenance to repair or replacement. Do not keep stress-testing a component that a diagnostic has identified as defective.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you observe | Most likely areas to check | Appropriate next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fan becomes loud during gaming or rendering, then quiets afterward | Sustained CPU/GPU workload; restricted airflow can make it worse | Close or pause the task, improve ventilation, clean vents, and use a balanced thermal profile if suitable |
| Hot and slow at the desktop with no demanding app open | Runaway process, excessive startup work, dust, or a firmware/power-profile conflict | Check Task Manager or Activity Monitor, review startup apps, clean safely, then update drivers and BIOS |
| Fan runs at maximum, grinds, rattles, or does not spin | Fan bearing or fan-control failure; a blocked heatsink is also possible | Power off, run the maker’s fan diagnostic, and arrange fan or heatsink service if it fails |
| Performance drops after several minutes of a heavy task | Thermal throttling from rising processor or graphics temperature | Check airflow, workload, dust, thermal profile, and diagnostics; do not assume a faster application or accessory will fix the cause |
| Random shutdown without noticeable heat | Battery, charger, power-delivery, or another electrical fault | Check the charger and battery condition; use professional service if shutdowns continue |
| Swollen case, lifted trackpad, or burning smell | Potential battery or electrical safety fault | Stop using and charging the computer and seek service immediately |
Choose the right remedy for each computer type
| Device | Common airflow constraints | Checks that matter most |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop | Underside intake blocked by soft surfaces; compact heatsink and fan; hinge or side exhaust obstruction | Hard, flat surface; clear all grilles; Task Manager or Activity Monitor; model-specific fan and BIOS diagnostics |
| Desktop tower | Dust filters, CPU cooler, graphics-card fan, power-supply intake, or case airflow arrangement | Inspect every fan and filter; verify intake and exhaust paths; check graphics and CPU workloads |
| All-in-one | Rear or bottom vents close to a wall or desk; limited service access | Clear the enclosure, check processes, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics, and obtain service if internal cleaning is required |
| Mac | Model-specific airflow and sensor behavior; background process or fan-control issue | Activity Monitor CPU tab, clear vents, install Apple updates, and contact Apple for persistent operating-temperature issues |
Should you use a laptop stand or cooling pad?
A stand or cooling pad can improve airflow when it raises the intake away from a desk and is compatible with the laptop’s vent layout. Treat it as a secondary measure, not a repair. It cannot unclog an internal heatsink, restore degraded thermal material, or replace a failed fan. Test the computer on a clear hard surface first; if that changes temperatures substantially, an airflow accessory may help maintain that position.
For a desktop, correct case airflow and clean filters are more important than adding another fan blindly. A replacement fan is appropriate only after inspection or diagnostics identify fan failure and you have confirmed that the replacement matches the connector, size, and control method for the system.
Temperature readings need context
Third-party temperature applications read internal sensors; they do not measure the external case temperature. Sensor names, limits, and accuracy vary by processor, graphics chip, firmware, and application. Apple cautions that external case temperature cannot be inferred directly from a generic temperature app, and Intel recommends using a utility validated for the specific processor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use readings to compare the same computer under the same workload before and after a change, not as an isolated number detached from symptoms. A rising reading paired with throttling, freezes, or shutdowns is more significant than a warm case during a short, expected burst of work. If the utility conflicts with the manufacturer’s diagnostics, rely on the validated manufacturer information and service guidance.

When it is safe to keep using the computer
Brief warmth and increased fan noise during an expected heavy workload are generally a signal to improve airflow and manage the workload, not an emergency by themselves. Save work and stop using the computer when it repeatedly throttles, freezes, restarts, or shuts down; when a fan is mechanically noisy or stationary; or when the chassis is swollen or smells burnt.
Do not repeatedly restart a machine that has shut down for thermal protection. Let it cool, inspect airflow, run diagnostics, and arrange repair if the behavior returns. Continuing to operate through a battery or electrical warning can create a safety hazard beyond ordinary overheating.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Note when the heat occurs: at idle, during a specific application, or after a sustained workload.
- Move the device to a hard surface and clear every intake and exhaust opening.
- Check CPU, memory, and GPU activity in Task Manager or Activity Monitor; close the responsible application and review startup work.
- Shut down, disconnect power, and clean vents, filters, and accessible heatsinks with short bursts of canned or compressed air. Never use a vacuum, blower, or your breath.
- Install operating-system, manufacturer-driver, and BIOS or firmware updates, then review the maker’s thermal or power profile.
- Run the manufacturer’s fan and hardware diagnostics and record any code.
- If the fan, heatsink, thermal material, battery, or power system is implicated, stop stress-testing and arrange qualified repair.
- After each change, repeat the same light and heavy tasks and observe whether fan behavior, throttling, freezes, or shutdowns return.
As an optional Windows shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, reduce unnecessary CPU, RAM, and disk load from background activity, clean temporary and cache files, check certain Windows settings and missing updates, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or fixes a failed fan, heatsink, or other hardware fault.
Bottom line
Start with airflow and workload: use a hard surface, clear vents, identify unusual CPU or GPU use, and clean only after a full shutdown and power disconnect. Then update the operating system, drivers, and BIOS, check thermal profiles, and run the manufacturer’s diagnostics. Persistent throttling, a non-spinning or noisy fan, repeated protective shutdowns, a swollen chassis, or a burning smell calls for service rather than more software tweaks.
