The cause varies by PC, so start with Windows’ storage breakdown rather than deleting files at random.
How to see what is using space on C:
- Check available space: Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at the available space shown for the C: drive.
- Open the storage breakdown: In Windows 11 or Windows 10, go to Settings > System > Storage. The screen groups usage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. Labels and navigation can vary slightly by Windows version. Microsoft’s Storage settings guide explains the categories.
- Choose a cleanup based on the largest relevant category: Review the options below, then confirm deletion only for files you no longer need.
There is no single cause or universal amount of space to reclaim. Windows’ own guidance does not give a fixed free-space threshold for updates; Windows checks whether there is enough storage before installing one. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.

Choose the cleanup that matches the space use

Clean up temporary and system files carefully
Review Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup
Windows offers Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup to review file categories that may be removable. Some choices include temporary or system files. The available categories depend on the PC, so read what Windows lists rather than treating every item as disposable.

Use Storage Sense if you want routine cleanup
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. Microsoft says Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:, not every drive. Check its configuration before relying on it: what it removes depends on the options you select. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide describes its scope and settings.
Understand System & reserved
Windows reserves storage for temporary files, caches, and other system needs. That category is not simply wasted space: Microsoft says Windows can clear reserved storage for other processes when the device is low on space.

Review large personal files and the Recycle Bin
Check folders such as Downloads, Videos, Pictures, and Documents. Sort a folder by file size to locate large items, then remove files you no longer want or move files you want to keep but rarely use to an external drive. Choose an external device that is compatible with your PC and has enough capacity for the files; Windows’ guidance does not prescribe a particular model or size.
Deleting a file may only move it to the Recycle Bin. Empty the bin to remove those deleted items from storage. Before emptying it, check that it does not contain anything you still need.

Free space used by cloud files or apps
Make eligible OneDrive files online-only
OneDrive Files On-Demand can avoid keeping full local copies of eligible files. A file made online-only must be downloaded when you need it, so you need a working network connection. Storage Sense can manage eligible cloud content when configured, but files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt.
Review apps and where new content is saved
If Installed apps account for a large share, review recommendations and uninstall only apps you no longer need. Windows also lets you change where new content is saved. Whether that helps depends on your drive layout and what you save; it does not move existing files automatically.

Think before removing a previous Windows installation
After an upgrade, Windows may offer a previous installation for deletion. Removing it frees the files associated with that installation, but also removes the option to return to the earlier Windows version. Leave it in place if you may need that rollback.

If the Temp folder fills again quickly
If temporary files return rapidly after cleanup, Microsoft documents one specific cause: Microsoft Store .appx files repeatedly filling the Temp folder. For that symptom, Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps include resetting the Store, clearing its cache with wsreset.exe, running the Store Apps and Windows Update troubleshooters, and restarting. This sequence is for that recurring Temp-folder problem, not a general fix for every full C: drive. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s free-space troubleshooting guidance.
