Slow loading, buffering and repeated pausing on HBO Max most often come from a slow or unstable internet connection. HBO Max’s own US help guidance says so. It can also be a problem with one device or app. The quickest way to tell which is to check your speed, cut other network use, restart your gear, and then try a second device on the same network.
What HBO Max says causes slow loading
HBO Max’s US help page on slow loading, buffering, or pausing says slow or inconsistent internet can cause buffering or poor video quality. Its advice covers four things: check connection speed, reduce other network activity, restart network devices, and test another supported device on the same network.

These are HBO Max’s own recommendations, not independent test results. Other devices sharing your connection can use up much of your speed, so a plan that looks fast on paper may not leave enough for streaming.

Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Test your speed on the affected network
Run a speed test on the same network as the device that is slow, ideally on that device. Compare the result with the 5 Mbps HD minimum, or 50+ Mbps if you stream in 4K. If the result misses the minimum, HBO Max says to contact your internet provider.
2. Pause other heavy network use
HBO Max suggests temporarily pausing other people’s network activity so more bandwidth goes to streaming. Large downloads, other video streams, game updates and cloud backups are the usual culprits. Retry after pausing them.

3. Restart the streaming device and network equipment
Restart the device you watch on, then the modem and router. The exact steps differ by device, and HBO Max’s app and HBOMax.com troubleshooting page has platform-specific instructions.

4. Try another supported device on the same network
Open HBO Max on a different supported device connected to the same network. HBO Max says this shows whether the problem is the network or one particular device.

- Both devices are slow: the network is the likely cause. Go back to steps 1 to 3 and the cable check below.
- Only one device is slow: focus on that device and app (next step).
If you can, also try the problem device on a different network, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s Wi-Fi. If the slowness follows the device, the device is the cause. If it follows your home network, the network is.
5. Update, clear and reinstall on the problem device
HBO Max’s device guidance includes checking for app and device updates, restarting, and, where the device menu allows, clearing the app’s cache or data or reinstalling the app. The menu paths differ by platform, so follow the instructions for your device on the HBO Max help pages.

6. Check the physical connections
HBO Max states: “A loose coaxial or Ethernet cable can weaken the signal.” Reseat the cables between your modem, router and streaming device before you buy anything. HBO Max recommends checking connections, not replacing cables. Replace a cable only if it is damaged or can’t be seated properly.
7. Contact the right party
- Speed below the minimum: contact your internet provider, as HBO Max directs.
- One device still has trouble: contact HBO Max support and note any error message or code shown on screen.
What these sources don’t tell you
HBO Max’s support pages don’t say whether a service outage is affecting you right now, so the steps above can’t rule one out. If several devices on a connection that tests fast all struggle, a service-side problem is possible, and contacting HBO Max support is the sensible next step. The sources also don’t name a best router, internet provider or streaming device.
