Garry’s Mod lag has three different sources: low render FPS, CPU or simulation stalls, and network delay. Separate those symptoms first, then isolate addons, simplify the map, check memory and temperatures, verify files, and adjust graphics only where monitoring shows a bottleneck. This approach fixes the cause instead of applying a random console-command bundle.

What “lag” means in Garry’s Mod
The word lag is used for several unrelated problems. A useful diagnosis starts by identifying which one you are actually seeing.

Render FPS drops
Low FPS is a local rendering problem. The camera feels slow or uneven, frame pacing becomes irregular, and the issue can occur in a private single-player session with no internet connection. A crowded scene, high-resolution textures, shadows, reflections, or a graphics card that is out of video memory can all reduce rendering performance.
Simulation and CPU stalls
Garry’s Mod can also pause while the game simulates physics, scripts, NPCs, constraints, and other entities. In this case, the picture may freeze even when the graphics card is not fully loaded. Large contraption saves, many active props, demanding scripted entities, a slow or overheated processor, and background applications are common contributors.

Network or server delay
Online-only delay is different again. Players may teleport, actions arrive late, or the server stops responding while your local FPS remains normal. Server tick performance, player count, server-side scripts, and your connection path matter more than lowering texture quality. Do not buy hardware for a problem that occurs only on one server.
Start with a controlled test
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem in a situation where you can compare results. Record the approximate FPS, whether frame delivery is smooth or hitching, and whether the issue appears offline.

If the clean single-player test is smooth but the online session is not, concentrate on server and connection conditions first. If both tests hitch, continue with the local checks below.
Test whether addons are responsible
Facepunch’s support guidance says to try running the game without addons. Addons can add models, scripts, entities, hooks, and background work even when they are not visible in the current scene.

Use a no-addon launch
- Open Steam Library and right-click Garry’s Mod.
- Choose Properties, then stay on the General tab.
- In Launch Options, enter
-noaddons -noworkshop. - Close the Properties window, start the game, and repeat the controlled test.
If the stutter disappears, the game installation and hardware are less likely to be the immediate cause. Remove the launch options after testing, then re-enable addons in small batches. Test after each batch so the responsible collection is narrowed down instead of reintroducing everything at once.
Handle a newly installed addon
When the slowdown began after one particular addon was installed or updated, disable that addon first. Facepunch’s startup guidance recommends this approach for reproducible addon-related problems; if the error remains reproducible with the addon enabled, report the steps and error details to its creator. Keep a note of addon names and versions so you can undo a change reliably.
Reduce physics and scene complexity
The official Garry’s Mod FAQ identifies large numbers of spawned props or constraints as a cause of slow performance. Physics objects continue to consume simulation time even when the camera is pointed elsewhere.
Test a clean save
- Load a new, simple map rather than the save that contains your largest build.
- Remove duplicate props, ragdolls, NPCs, and entities that are no longer needed.
- Delete unnecessary welds, ropes, hinges, motors, and other constraints.
- Save a reduced version and compare it with the original using the same camera route.
If the clean save is smooth and the large build is not, reducing entity and constraint count is the durable fix. Graphics changes cannot remove the CPU work created by an overloaded physics scene.

Check background programs and thermal throttling
Close browsers with many tabs, video encoders, game launchers, synchronisation tools, and other workloads before retesting. A background process can consume CPU time or memory and make a previously stable scene hitch.
Watch CPU frequency and temperature while the drop occurs. Steam warns that CPU slowdowns and overheating can cause sudden performance problems, and that low memory may cause the game or Steam to be swapped to disk, producing repeated frame hitches. Improve airflow, clear blocked vents, and confirm that fans are operating if temperatures rise sharply and the processor reduces its clock speed.
A useful comparison is to repeat the same route immediately after a cold start and again after a long session. A slowdown that appears only after the system warms up points toward thermals rather than a map or addon change.

| Resource | Minimum listed | Recommended listed | How to interpret a drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| System memory (RAM) | 4 GB | 8 GB | If usage reaches the limit and disk activity rises, swapping can create repeated hitches. |
| Dedicated graphics memory (VRAM) | 1 GB | 4 GB | When VRAM is full, texture streaming and frame pacing can deteriorate; lower texture detail first. |
| Processor frequency | 2 GHz | 2.5 GHz | Frequency alone does not predict physics performance, but an overloaded or throttled CPU can stall simulation. |
These are listed requirements, not a guarantee of a fixed FPS. Workshop content, map complexity, resolution, and server scripts can demand more than the baseline.
When RAM is the constraint
Open the operating system’s performance monitor while reproducing the hitch. If physical memory is exhausted, disk usage spikes, and the game recovers after a pause, close background programs and retest. A compatible RAM upgrade is reasonable when the same swapping occurs with a clean background, but check the motherboard’s memory type, capacity limits, and available slots before purchasing.

When VRAM is the constraint
Compare dedicated VRAM usage with the graphics card’s capacity during the drop. Lower texture detail first and repeat the same test. This change is reversible and directly reduces texture-memory pressure. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only when VRAM remains saturated after conservative settings and the rest of the system is healthy; verify power, case clearance, connector, and system compatibility before buying.
Lower graphics settings in a controlled order
Change one setting at a time and record the old value. That makes it possible to identify the setting that helped and restore image quality later.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Texture detail: reduce this first when VRAM usage is near capacity.
- Shadows: lower shadow quality if the GPU is heavily loaded in scenes with many lights or objects.
- Reflections: reduce or disable them when reflective surfaces cause large frame-time spikes.
- Post-processing: reduce effects such as bloom or other screen-space processing if the drop tracks camera effects.
Test each change on the same map, camera route, and resolution. A lower setting that changes nothing is evidence that the bottleneck lies elsewhere, so restore it rather than sacrificing image quality without a benefit.

Missing or damaged files can produce abnormal loading and instability. Facepunch recommends file validation as a corrective step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Garry’s Mod and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart the game and repeat the controlled test before restoring optional launch settings.
Validation replaces files Steam identifies as missing or damaged. It does not decide which workshop addon is poorly behaved, so keep addon isolation as a separate test.
Fix multiplayer-only lag without chasing FPS
When single-player performance is stable but one online session lags, compare conditions rather than lowering every graphics option.
- Check whether the problem follows one server or appears across several servers.
- Note the server’s player count and your ping when the delay begins.
- Compare a quiet server with a busy one using the same local graphics settings.
- Ask whether other players report the same delay; a shared slowdown points toward server simulation or scripts.
High local FPS does not eliminate network delay, and low local FPS does not prove a server fault. Measure both during the same incident. If only one heavily populated server is affected, report the time, map, player count, and symptoms to that server’s administrators instead of replacing hardware.
Choose the remedy that matches the evidence
| Choice | Best evidence for it | Cost and reversibility | What it can and cannot solve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Addon isolation | Performance improves with -noaddons -noworkshop. |
Free and fully reversible. | Identifies addon overhead; does not repair an overheated or underpowered system. |
| Lower texture detail | Dedicated VRAM is saturated during drops. | Free, immediate, and reversible. | Reduces VRAM pressure; will not remove CPU physics or network delay. |
| Buy a graphics card | VRAM remains full after conservative settings and the GPU is the measured limit. | Expensive and dependent on power, size, and system compatibility. | Adds rendering headroom; does not fix swapping, addon scripts, or a slow server. |
| Close background programs | Memory or CPU use falls and the hitch disappears when other programs are closed. | Free but temporary. | Releases resources for the session; does not increase installed capacity. |
| Upgrade RAM | System memory is exhausted and disk swapping repeats during the same test. | Hardware cost; compatibility must be checked. | Reduces swapping when capacity is the limit; cannot cure VRAM saturation. |
| Reduce props and constraints | A clean save is smooth while the large contraption is slow. | Free, though it changes the build. | Reduces physics workload; graphics upgrades are not a substitute. |
| Investigate the server | Single-player is smooth and delay is limited to a server or busy session. | Free; may require administrator action. | Addresses network or server simulation conditions, not local rendering. |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing graphics for network lag: lower settings cannot repair a delayed server response.
- Installing a large “FPS boost” command bundle: community presets and multicore commands are not official guarantees. Test one change at a time, keep a backup of configuration files, and revert any command that causes instability.
- Buying hardware before measuring: a new GPU cannot remove addon script work, physics overload, or RAM swapping.
- Re-enabling every addon at once: this hides the offending addon and forces you to repeat the diagnosis.
- Ignoring heat: a system that is fast when cold but slow after sustained play needs airflow and thermal investigation.
A practical decision path
- Does it happen offline? If no, compare servers, player counts, and ping. If yes, continue.
- Does
-noaddons -noworkshophelp? If yes, re-enable addons in batches and remove the offending one. - Does a clean save help? If yes, reduce props, entities, and constraints in the affected build.
- Does the system swap or overheat? Close programs, improve cooling, or address compatible RAM capacity when monitoring confirms the limit.
- Is VRAM full? Lower texture detail, then shadows, reflections, and post-processing one at a time.
- Are files intact? Run Steam’s integrity check and retest.
This order prioritizes free, reversible tests and prevents a network or addon problem from being mistaken for a graphics-card failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the fix from returning
- Keep a short record of addon batches and configuration changes.
- Save a clean version of important builds before adding large contraptions.
- Retest after major addon updates rather than assuming an update is harmless.
- Leave enough free system memory for the game and close unusually heavy background workloads.
- Clean blocked vents and watch temperatures during long sessions.
- Restore graphics settings one at a time after solving the bottleneck, stopping when frame pacing becomes uneven again.
The fastest reliable fix is not a universal command: it is matching the remedy to the measured symptom. Addon isolation, a simpler scene, memory and thermal checks, file verification, and targeted graphics reductions cover the causes documented by Facepunch and Steam without spending money unnecessarily.
