Why Is Betelgeuse’s Companion Star Difficult to See, and What Can Hubble Reveal?

Betelgeuse’s companion is hard to see because it is both faint and extremely close on the sky to a much brighter red supergiant. Betelgeuse’s glare overwhelms the companion, while the orbital geometry offers only a short period of greater separation before the smaller star moves back into the glare. Hubble has not produced a direct photograph of the companion. Instead, observations spanning nearly eight years reveal the companion’s influence through a moving, denser wake in Betelgeuse’s extended atmosphere.

Why Betelgeuse’s companion is so difficult to see

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant roughly 650 light-years away, according to NASA’s 2026 account. Its enormous, luminous surface dominates the view. A much fainter star beside it can be physically nearby yet disappear in the primary star’s glare, just as a dim lamp is lost next to a searchlight.

The contrast problem

The companion candidate reported in Gemini North data was about six magnitudes fainter than Betelgeuse at a wavelength of 466 nanometers. A difference of six magnitudes corresponds to a very large brightness contrast: the brighter object contributes nearly all of the detected light in a small region of sky. Instrumental scattered light, diffraction and changes in Betelgeuse’s own atmosphere make that contrast still harder to remove.

This is not simply a matter of collecting more light. A larger telescope gathers more photons from both stars, but it also has to suppress the bright primary’s light accurately enough to distinguish a much weaker signal immediately beside it. High-contrast imaging, careful calibration and observations at favorable orbital phases are all needed.

The angular-separation problem

The two stars are separated by only about 52 milliarcseconds in the reported direct-imaging observations. A milliarcsecond is one-thousandth of an arcsecond, far below the apparent size of ordinary stars to the unaided eye. At that separation, Betelgeuse’s image and the companion’s image overlap in the instrument’s point-spread function. The companion is not a clean second dot that can be picked out by simply looking through a telescope.

A short observing window

The companion’s apparent distance from Betelgeuse changes as it orbits. Near greatest separation, high-contrast instruments have the best chance of isolating it. That favorable geometry lasts only a few months; as the companion moves closer in projection, the primary’s glare hides it again. NASA’s 2025 discussion placed a predicted greatest-separation opportunity in November 2027, while its 2026 account says the next emergence is expected in 2027. Those dates are forecasts for planning observations, not guarantees that the star will be visibly resolved on a particular night.

What Hubble actually revealed

Hubble’s key contribution is indirect. It tracked changes in Betelgeuse’s spectrum and in the speed and direction of gas moving through the supergiant’s outer atmosphere. Across nearly eight years of Hubble and ground-based observations, the changes followed a pattern consistent with a denser wake produced by a companion moving through that atmosphere.

A wake rather than a photograph

As the companion travels through Betelgeuse’s extended gas, it can disturb and compress material behind it. That disturbance changes the absorption and emission features seen in Betelgeuse’s spectrum and alters measured gas motions. By following those changes over time, astronomers can infer the companion’s passage even when the star itself is lost in the primary’s glare.

NASA astronomer Andrea Dupree, lead author of the 2026 study account, described the effect this way: “It’s a bit like a boat moving through water. The companion star creates a ripple effect in Betelgeuse’s atmosphere that we can actually see in the data.” The analogy refers to an observable pattern in spectral and velocity measurements. It is not a claim that Hubble photographed a visible trail or a resolved companion.

The repeating cycle

NASA reports that the wake appears after the companion crosses in front of Betelgeuse from Earth’s viewpoint, approximately every 2,100 days, or about six years. The recurrence links the atmospheric disturbance to an orbiting object rather than to a one-time fluctuation in the supergiant.

In the current phase, NASA says the companion is eclipsed from our line of sight. Follow-up observations are planned as it emerges in 2027. Watching the wake and the star’s direct-imaging position through that cycle should help test whether the inferred orbit remains consistent from one passage to the next.

Did Hubble directly image Betelgeuse’s companion?

No. The Hubble result is evidence of the companion’s effect on surrounding gas. It does not show the companion as a separate resolved point of light. NASA’s companion-and-wake illustration is explicitly an artist’s concept, so it should not be used as a caption for a Hubble photograph.

Direct-image claims come from other instruments and data sets. Keeping those evidence types separate matters: atmospheric tracking can establish a companion’s influence, while high-contrast imaging attempts to isolate light from the companion itself.

What the direct-imaging observations found

Observation Instrument and data Reported result How to interpret it
2025 report Gemini North speckle images from 2020 and 2024 Probable companion at about 52 milliarcseconds separation and position angle 115 degrees; roughly six magnitudes fainter than Betelgeuse at 466 nm Signal reported at 1.5 sigma, so the direct-imaging claim was tentative on its own
2026 announcement VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL data collected December 6, 2024 Candidate Betelgeuse B at 52.32 ± 0.18 milliarcseconds and position angle 117.12 ± 0.60 degrees ESO reports 6.1 sigma with PACO ASDI processing and 5.1 sigma with PCA; this is a separate data set and analysis pipeline

The Gemini North result

Howell and colleagues’ 2025 publication record describes a probable signal in Gemini North’s Alopeke speckle observations. The 2024 images placed it at approximately 52 milliarcseconds from Betelgeuse, at a position angle of 115 degrees, and about six magnitudes fainter at 466 nanometers. A 1.5-sigma result means the signal was not highly significant by itself; noise or residual instrumental effects could not be ruled out confidently from that report alone.

That qualification does not make the observation irrelevant. Its measured location provides a testable position for later observations, and its approximate separation and angle can be compared with the atmospheric-wake timing and with independent instruments.

The later VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL candidate

In an announcement dated August 19, 2026, the European Southern Observatory reported a stronger candidate in data from the Very Large Telescope’s SPHERE-ZIMPOL instrument. The December 6, 2024 observations gave a separation of 52.32 ± 0.18 milliarcseconds and a position angle of 117.12 ± 0.60 degrees.

ESO reported detection significances of 6.1 sigma using PACO ASDI processing and 5.1 sigma using principal-component analysis (PCA). Those values describe the strength of the candidate under the stated processing methods; they are not interchangeable with the 1.5-sigma value from the earlier Gemini analysis. The observations also remain a candidate identification in ESO’s wording, and future data must establish how consistently the signal moves with the proposed orbit.

Why the two kinds of evidence fit together

The observations answer different questions:

  • Atmospheric tracking: Do recurring changes in Betelgeuse’s spectral lines and gas velocities look like a companion disturbing the supergiant’s atmosphere? Hubble and ground-based monitoring provide that evidence.
  • Direct imaging: Is there a faint source at the predicted small separation and position angle? Gemini North and VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL data address that question.
  • Orbital geometry: Does the source appear, disappear and change position in the way expected from an approximately six-year cycle?
  • Physical interpretation: Are the inferred brightness and mass compatible with a companion formed at the same time as Betelgeuse?

Agreement in position between independent high-contrast observations and agreement in timing with the atmospheric wake would make the overall case stronger than either method alone. Conversely, a future source that fails to move as predicted would require the candidate identification or the orbital model to be reconsidered.

How certain is the companion detection?

Certainty depends on which result is being discussed. NASA’s 2026 account treats the recurring wake as firm evidence that a companion is affecting Betelgeuse’s atmosphere. The 2025 Gemini paper described its direct-imaging signal as probable and measured it at only 1.5 sigma. ESO’s 2026 announcement reports substantially higher processing significances for a candidate in a separate VLT data set.

Those statements should not be collapsed into “Hubble photographed the companion” or into a single undifferentiated certainty level. The atmospheric evidence and the direct-imaging evidence have different sources, measurements and failure modes. The strongest interpretation is that an orbiting companion is indicated by its repeated effect on Betelgeuse and is also represented by a candidate faint source near the predicted location, while continued observations are needed to refine the orbit and confirm the identification.

What the reported mass means

ESO gives the candidate a mass estimate of 2.6–3.1 times the Sun’s mass. That range is conditional: it assumes the two stars are coeval, meaning they formed at approximately the same time. If that assumption or the adopted stellar models changes, the inferred mass can change as well. The number is therefore an interpretation of the candidate’s properties, not a direct weighing of the star.

The mass estimate also illustrates why resolving the companion matters. A direct measurement of its brightness and color, combined with orbital information, can constrain its temperature, age and evolutionary state. Until the source is followed through more orbital phases, those properties remain model-dependent.

What astronomers should learn from the 2027 opportunity

When NASA expects the companion to emerge in 2027, observers can compare several predictions at once:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Measure whether a faint source appears near the previously reported separation and position angle.
  2. Check whether its motion between epochs matches an orbit with foreground crossings about 2,100 days apart.
  3. Track whether changes in Betelgeuse’s spectral lines and atmospheric velocities recur as the companion passes through or behind the extended atmosphere.
  4. Compare results from independent instruments and reduction methods rather than relying on one processing pipeline.

The predicted November 2027 greatest-separation date is especially useful because the companion should be farther from the brightest part of Betelgeuse’s image in projection. Even then, the object will remain a demanding high-contrast target, not an easy visual double star.

Can a normal telescope show the companion?

The measurements described here rely on specialized professional observations with Hubble, Gemini North/Alopeke and VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL. Betelgeuse’s glare, the roughly 52-milliarcsecond separation and the short favorable viewing interval mean that a consumer telescope should not be treated as a reliable way to visually resolve the companion. An apparent speck near Betelgeuse would not by itself establish that the companion had been seen; confirmation requires calibrated imaging or the time-series spectral and velocity evidence used by professional teams.

The clearest answer to the title

Betelgeuse’s companion is difficult to see because it is faint, only about 52 milliarcseconds from a vastly brighter star, and hidden for much of its orbit by Betelgeuse’s glare. The useful separation window lasts only a few months. Hubble’s breakthrough is not a direct portrait: nearly eight years of observations show a recurring, denser wake and associated spectral and gas-motion changes in Betelgeuse’s atmosphere. Gemini’s 2025 direct-imaging signal was probable but low significance, while ESO’s 2026 VLT announcement reports a stronger candidate with precisely measured separation and position angle. Together, these observations provide complementary evidence that can be tested as the companion emerges again in 2027.
