IPL teams can spend heavily on one player because the auction is a public contest for scarce roles under a fixed purse—not a simple judgment of what a player is “worth.” Auction theory helps explain why the winner can overestimate a player’s value; ideas such as sunk cost and FOMO offer possible ways to interpret a bidding war, but there is no evidence here that they caused a particular franchise’s decision.
How does an IPL mega auction work?
A mega auction is a large-scale player auction in which more players are available than in a mini auction. A 2025 study describes mega auctions as typically occurring every four seasons, but that is a pattern, not a guarantee of a fixed schedule. The exact rules can change between cycles.

For the 2025–27 cycle, the IPL Governing Council’s 28 September 2024 regulations let each franchise retain up to six players through a combination of direct retention and Right to Match (RTM), with no more than five capped and two uncapped players. The number of each type a team used was its choice, so franchises did not necessarily arrive at the auction with the same remaining purse or roster needs.

Retentions and RTM shape which players reach bidding and how much room each team has to act. The 2025–27 regulation announcement is the source for these cycle-specific limits; they should not be treated as permanent IPL rules.

What does “budget” mean?
The 2025 auction purse was INR 120 crore. That is distinct from the total salary-cap figures announced for the cycle. The IPL Governing Council said the total salary cap comprises the auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees.
| Season | Announced total salary cap | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | INR 146 crore | Total salary cap, including auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees; IPL Governing Council, 28 September 2024. |
| 2026 | INR 151 crore | Total salary cap, including auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees; IPL Governing Council, 28 September 2024. |
| 2027 | INR 157 crore | Total salary cap, including auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees; IPL Governing Council, 28 September 2024. |
The same announcement introduced a match fee of INR 7.5 lakh per match for each playing member, including the Impact Player, and continued the Impact Player regulation through the 2025–27 cycle. Those provisions help explain why the overall salary-cap figure is not interchangeable with the auction purse.
Why do IPL teams spend so much on one player?
A bid is a team’s choice within a particular auction, not a universal measure of a player’s worth. A franchise may be pursuing a role it considers difficult to fill, trying to build a balanced XI, or acting with a very different retention mix and remaining purse from its rivals. The same player can therefore have different strategic value to different teams.

Teams also have to choose between concentrating money in a few players and spreading it across the squad. A high bid can be a considered trade-off if the team believes the player fills a priority role and the rest of the roster can still be completed. It can also leave less room for other needs. The amount alone does not tell an outside observer which explanation applies.
- Scarcity: If several teams want a player who fits a hard-to-fill role, competition can push the price up.
- Roster context: Retentions and RTM choices affect both the team’s needs and its available purse.
- Opportunity cost: Money committed to one player is unavailable for other auction choices.
- Uncertainty: A player’s future performance is not known with certainty when teams bid.
What is the winner’s curse in an auction?
In a common-value auction, bidders are estimating an asset whose underlying value is broadly shared, even if each has different information or expectations. The winner may be the bidder who was most optimistic—and so may have overestimated the value. This is called the winner’s curse.
A 2010 paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “The value of victory: social origins of the winner’s curse in common value auctions,” reported an experimental winner’s-curse effect when people competed against human opponents, even after the calculation burden was reduced. That supports the general auction mechanism; it does not show that any named IPL team overpaid for a particular player.

- Ergonomic design offers good grip and control for casual / recreational use

To identify a winner’s curse in a specific IPL bid, it would not be enough to point to a large winning price. An analyst would also need a defensible estimate of the player’s value and evidence that the bid exceeded it. Without that, “winner’s curse” is a useful risk to consider, not a verdict about a franchise’s decision.
Can sunk cost or FOMO explain a bidding war?
Sunk cost: does earlier spending justify another bid?
The sunk cost fallacy is letting money or effort already spent influence a decision about what to do next, even when that past cost cannot be recovered. In an auction, a team should assess any next bid against the player’s expected value and the remaining purse—not bid more simply because it has already spent heavily elsewhere or has already committed to a plan.
That is a way to test the logic of a decision, not evidence about what a franchise was thinking. The IPL rules establish purse constraints, but the cited sources do not establish that sunk costs caused a particular team to continue bidding.

FOMO: does fear of missing a target change the bid?
FOMO—fear of missing out—can be a plausible lens when a scarce player attracts public competition. A team might worry that no comparable option will be available later. But the sources cited here do not measure FOMO among IPL bidders, so it should not be presented as a proven motive behind a specific bid.
For a viewer, the practical question is whether the price still makes sense for the team’s remaining purse and roster needs. A dramatic bidding sequence cannot answer that on its own.

They might; competitive bidding creates a risk of over-optimism, which is the general point of the winner’s curse. But a high price does not prove irrationality, and visible persistence does not establish sunk cost or FOMO. A team could be making a deliberate decision based on its own assessment of a player and its roster.

A more useful way to judge an auction strategy is to look beyond its biggest bid:
- How much did the team spend relative to base prices and its remaining purse?
- Did its buys cover the roles and positions it needed?
- How did its retention and RTM choices shape the roster it had to rebuild?
- Did it concentrate salaries in a few players or preserve depth?
- Did its choices fit its performance needs, and are results being judged over enough seasons to account for uncertainty?
These questions distinguish a visible price from an assessment of the overall roster strategy. They do not reveal private valuations or prove what motivated a particular bid.
Does auction strategy determine IPL results?
Not conclusively, based on the cited IPL-specific study. Dhruv J. Joglekar, N. David Pifer and Sachin Narayanan’s 2025 paper, “Clustered auction strategies and performance outcomes in the Indian Premier League,” examined 127 team-season observations across 11 teams that appeared consistently from 2009 through 2024. The authors’ regression analyses found no statistically significant differences in winning percentage or playoff probability across their strategy clusters.
That result is bounded by the study’s sample and method. It does not prove that every auction strategy is equivalent, that auction decisions have no effect, or that no team can gain an advantage. It does caution against declaring a strategy successful or a failure from one striking purchase or a short run of results.
How to read the next big IPL bid
Separate what is observable from what is inferred. The bid, the published rules and the remaining roster constraints can be examined; a team’s private valuation and decision-makers’ motives generally cannot be read from the auction room alone. Winner’s curse describes a real general risk in competitive auctions, while sunk cost and FOMO are hypotheses to test—not labels to attach automatically to an expensive purchase.
