A hold does not, by itself, show that you have done anything wrong, and no general rule guarantees release within a particular number of hours or days.
Contact the sending provider through an independently verified official channel, ask exactly what is outstanding and how to submit it securely, then respond with accurate information. The documents, review time, cancellation rights and complaint route depend on the provider, countries involved, payment method and applicable law.

Why is my international transfer being held for compliance checks?
Providers of cross-border payments must operate within anti-money-laundering, counter-terrorist-financing, sanctions and payment-services rules. Before completing a transfer, they may need to establish who is sending and receiving the money, whether the details are traceable, what the payment is for and whether the activity fits the relationship they have with the customer.
Those checks can be routine, triggered by missing information or intensified because a transaction appears higher risk. The provider’s review team—not a general article—can know why a particular payment was paused. A customer should therefore treat a hold as a request to clarify or verify information, not as proof of criminal suspicion.
Incomplete or untraceable payer and payee details
UK HM Revenue & Customs guidance on information accompanying a funds transfer lists the payer’s name, full postal address and account number or another traceable identifier. It also lists the payee’s name and account number or identifier. A provider may stop processing when a required field is missing, inconsistent, abbreviated in a way that prevents matching, or not sufficiently traceable.
The same UK guidance describes circumstances in which independent verification can be required, including a transfer of €1,000 or more, cash or anonymous electronic-money funding, linked transactions that reach a relevant threshold, and regular transfers or an established business relationship. These are examples from UK guidance for transfers within its legal scope, not a worldwide consumer threshold. Another country, provider or payment rail may apply different triggers.
Identity and customer due diligence
For businesses covered by the UK Money Laundering Regulations, HMRC’s customer-due-diligence guidance describes checking a customer’s identity and understanding the purpose and expected nature of the relationship. A provider may ask you to confirm your legal name, address, date of birth, business details, beneficial ownership or the reason you are using the service.

A mismatch between your account profile and the transfer—for example, a different spelling of a name, an old address or a payment sent for a business purpose from a personal account—can require manual review. It does not establish that the transfer is illicit; it means the provider may need a reliable explanation and supporting records.

Source or origin of funds
A compliance team may need to understand where the money came from. Depending on the circumstances, relevant evidence could include a payslip, bank statement showing a transfer from your own account, sale agreement, inheritance documentation, loan agreement, invoice, tax record or business accounting record. The appropriate evidence depends on the question asked and the transaction; there is no universal document list.
Send only genuine, relevant records. Altered statements, unexplained third-party payments or answers that conflict with your account history can prolong the review. If the funds came from several sources, explain that clearly and identify which record supports each part.
Purpose, expected activity or transaction pattern
Providers may compare the stated purpose with the amount, destination, frequency and previous activity. A large one-off payment to a new beneficiary, repeated transfers to several countries, a sudden change in account behavior or a payment involving a complex ownership structure may require additional questions. A routine pattern can still be reviewed if information is missing or a screening result needs resolution.
Enhanced due diligence for higher-risk situations
HMRC’s enhanced-due-diligence manual, published on 8 July 2026 and updated on 16 July 2026, describes a risk-based approach for relevant UK-regulated businesses. Enhanced checks can involve more identity evidence, closer examination of transaction history, ownership, financial circumstances, purpose and whether activity is consistent with the stated relationship.
Rank #3
That manual explains obligations for regulated businesses; it does not reveal the reason for an individual customer’s hold, prescribe a standard consumer checklist or set a fixed review period. A provider may also be unable to disclose sensitive screening details because doing so could compromise monitoring or legal duties.
What to do immediately
- Verify the contact channel. Open the provider’s official app or type its known website address yourself. If calling, obtain the number from an official statement, card, app or website—not from an unsolicited message or search advertisement. Ask whether the payment is waiting for information, under review, returned or rejected.
- Request a precise action list. Ask what information or document is missing, which format is accepted, where it must be uploaded, whether there is a deadline and when the provider expects to update you. Request the case or transfer reference. If staff cannot disclose the trigger, ask what steps they can disclose and the next contact date.
- Check every transfer detail. Compare the payer and payee names, addresses, account numbers or other identifiers, amount, currency, destination and stated purpose with your records. Tell the provider promptly about a typing error rather than trying to work around it.
- Submit accurate, relevant evidence. Use the provider’s authenticated upload area or another channel it confirms. Make sure scans are legible and complete, and explain unusual entries briefly. Never invent a source of funds or describe a personal payment as a business transaction to make it pass review.
- Keep a complete record. Save the receipt, reference number, messages, dates of calls, names or agent IDs where available and copies of everything submitted. This record helps if information is requested again or you need to make a formal complaint.
- Wait before sending another payment. A second transfer can create duplicate or linked transactions and make reconciliation harder. Ask the provider whether the first payment is still active, cancelled, returned or rejected before trying again.
What documents might clear the hold?
The provider should tell you what it needs. The following categories are examples of records commonly relevant to the questions described in UK due-diligence guidance; they are not a universal checklist.
| Question the provider may be resolving | Possible evidence, if relevant to your case | How to prepare it |
|---|---|---|
| Who is sending or receiving? | Government identity document, proof of address, business-registration or beneficial-owner records | Use the legal name and current address that match the account and transfer. |
| Where did the money come from? | Bank statement, payslip, tax record, sale or inheritance document, loan agreement or invoice | Show the transaction trail and explain any third-party contribution. |
| Why is the payment being made? | Contract, invoice, tuition or medical bill, property document, family-support explanation or other genuine record | Make the purpose, amount and beneficiary consistent with the transfer. |
| Why does activity differ from normal? | Business records, travel or relocation evidence, proof of a temporary event or a written explanation | Describe the change and its expected duration without speculation. |
Do not send a passport, bank statement or other sensitive file merely because someone asks by email, text or social-media message. Confirm the request inside the provider’s official account or by calling a verified number. A legitimate request still does not guarantee that uploading one document will release the payment.
How long can a compliance hold last?
No source establishes a universal hold duration. Timing varies with the provider’s queue, the payment method, the countries and currencies involved, whether another institution must respond, the completeness of your answers and the complexity of any risk assessment. A provider may give an estimated update date without promising a release date.
Ask for the next milestone rather than insisting on a global deadline: confirmation that documents were received, whether further information is required, when a reviewer will contact you and what happens if the payment cannot be completed. Do not assume that silence means approval or that a stated estimate creates a legal entitlement.
Can I cancel, recall or get a refund?
Ask the sending provider whether it can correct details, cancel the instruction, recall funds or return the payment. The answer can depend on whether the transfer has been released to the recipient’s bank, the payment method, the provider’s terms and local law. Do not promise yourself or the recipient that a refund will occur.
For US consumers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s remittance-transfer resource points to Regulation E materials concerning cancellation, refunds and error resolution. That resource does not decide whether Regulation E applies to a particular payment, and it is not a global rule. If the sender, recipient or provider is outside the United States, identify the complaint and consumer-protection process for the relevant country and product.

- Use the formal complaint route. Ask for the provider’s written complaints procedure, the address or online form, and any required reference number.
- State the facts in order. Include the transfer date, amount, currency, sender and recipient details, reference number, documents supplied and the outcome you are requesting.
- Ask for a written status. Request confirmation of whether the payment remains pending, has been rejected, has been returned or cannot be completed, along with any available next step.
- Escalate to the appropriate authority. The relevant regulator or ombudsman depends on the provider’s licence, the country and the product. A US remittance may involve Regulation E processes; another route may use a national financial-complaints scheme. Check the provider’s official disclosures and the regulator for the applicable jurisdiction.
- Protect your accounts. If you disclosed information to a suspicious contact, change affected passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, contact your bank and report suspected fraud through the appropriate official channel.
What not to do
- Do not split one payment into smaller transfers to avoid verification. HMRC guidance discusses linked transactions, so dividing payments may still be detected and can create more questions.
- Do not claim that a hold proves you are suspected of a crime. The checks may be routine, information-driven or risk-based, and the reason for an individual review is not established here.
- Do not upload altered documents, conceal the true purpose or use another person’s account to make the transfer appear different.
- Do not send identity or financial documents through an unsolicited link or to an unverified contact.
- Do not send a replacement transfer until the provider confirms the status of the first one.
- Do not rely on a social-media post, an unofficial “agent” or a promised release fee. Verify every request with the provider.
Why thresholds should not be treated as worldwide rules
Thresholds in official guidance describe legal duties in a defined jurisdiction and business context. HMRC’s transfer-information page gives €1,000 as an example associated with independent verification circumstances. Separate HMRC due-diligence guidance describes occasional-transaction thresholds of €15,000 for most covered businesses and €10,000 for high-value dealers or art-market participants, with provisions for linked transactions.

Those figures are not a guarantee that a smaller payment will avoid checks or that a larger payment will automatically be blocked. They do not apply universally to every bank, money-transfer service, corridor or customer. The provider’s terms and the law governing the specific route control what information can be requested and what rights you have.
A practical message you can send the provider
Use the provider’s secure messaging function or a verified phone call. Keep the wording factual:
“My international transfer dated [date], reference [reference], is showing as pending. Please confirm whether it is awaiting information, under review, returned or rejected. What exact information or documents are outstanding, what secure submission method should I use, and when should I expect the next update? If the transfer details contain an error, please tell me whether correction, cancellation or return is possible.”
