A reported 25-basis-point repo-rate increase adds a financing risk, but the tougher comparison—not that single rate move alone—is the clearest reason growth could cool without unit sales falling.
How strong is the sales trend beneath September’s headline?
The latest annual and quarterly figures show broad momentum, not just a one-month jump. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported that every major vehicle category reached its highest-ever sales in a financial year in FY2025–26, after seven years. In April–June 2026, sales were up by double digits across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

SIAM’s FY2025–26 release reports these figures. Its next-quarter data remained strong: April–June 2026 sales rose 25.9% for passenger vehicles, 20.3% for two-wheelers, 29.7% for three-wheelers and 18.3% for commercial vehicles year over year. SIAM attributed the quarter’s performance to factors including lower GST rates, softer financing costs, a low base and new models; it also flagged geopolitical developments and monsoon progress as uncertainties. The Q1 release is a useful baseline, but it does not establish that the same growth pace will persist through the year.

Why does GST 2.0 make September 2026 look especially strong?
The relevant comparison month was unusual. GST 2.0 rates took effect on 22 September 2025, near the end of that month. Reporting at the time described buyers postponing purchases while waiting for the change, followed by pent-up and festive demand after implementation. That left September 2025 relatively subdued and made October 2025 the first full month under the new rates.

When September 2026 is compared with that disrupted month, the percentage increase is amplified. October 2026 onward faces a more demanding year-ago comparison because the corresponding months in 2025 include a fuller period after the GST change. This is a base effect: the denominator in the growth calculation was unusually low. It can reduce the reported year-over-year growth rate even if monthly sales stay high or continue rising. It does not, by itself, mean demand has collapsed or that GST alone caused every subsequent change.
FADA figures reported by Autocar Professional put September 2026 total vehicle registrations at 2,536,920, up 31.82% year over year; registrations were also 4.69% above August. For the first half of FY2026–27, the same report gives retail of 15,512,319 vehicles, up 20.77% year over year. FADA’s president, quoted by Times of India, said the first five months—excluding September—grew around 17%. The different rates underline how much one unusual month can affect a headline.

These figures and the account of the transition are reported in Autocar Professional’s 8 October analysis and the Times of India report. FADA president Sai Giridhar described the September print as “the most base-distorted print of the year,” as quoted by Autocar Professional.
Are registrations and manufacturer sales telling the same story?
No. FADA retail figures count vehicles registered with buyers; SIAM and automaker wholesale figures count manufacturer dispatches to dealers. Dispatches can exceed registrations when dealer stocks rise, so the two measures should not be combined as though they were the same sale.

The wholesale figures, including September 2025’s 381,435 passenger-vehicle dispatches, were reported by Financial Express. The retail figure is from the Times of India report. Their different growth rates reflect different measures and comparison bases; the figures are not a direct like-for-like conversion rate.
Dealer inventory makes that distinction especially relevant. FADA figures reported in October put passenger-vehicle stocks at about 43–45 days, roughly five days above August-end; around 60% of PV dealers reported higher inventory. FADA’s preferred benchmark was about 21 days. This is a reported snapshot, not proof that unsold stock will necessarily lead to discounting or lower production. But if dispatches keep running ahead of registrations, inventory and dealer willingness to reorder become important signals alongside retail demand.

Which vehicle segments are contributing to the September rise?
FADA’s September retail figures show growth across categories, but the pace varied. The figures below are year-over-year rates reported by Times of India, not manufacturer dispatch data.

These are FADA figures carried by the Times of India. A high growth rate in one category should not be mistaken for the largest contribution in units: two-wheelers had the most registrations in this table, while commercial vehicles recorded the fastest percentage growth.

Affordability is one part of the GST 2.0 account. FADA president Sai Giridhar told ETAuto that affordability was central to the momentum and identified small cars, commuter two-wheelers, tractors and commercial vehicles as vehicles whose on-road cost could benefit from the change. That is an industry stakeholder’s assessment, not an independent estimate proving a durable expansion in ownership. Tax treatment depends on vehicle classification and specifications; a precise rate for a particular model should be checked against the applicable official notification. How much could higher interest rates affect a vehicle buyer?
Autocar Professional reported that the Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October 2026. That is a reported policy decision; it should not be read as an automatic, identical increase in every customer’s auto-loan rate. Banks and finance companies set borrower rates and determine pass-through, while an individual EMI depends on the principal, tenure, rate and loan terms.
To illustrate the scale, the Autocar Professional article attributes to Upstox Research an example in which the EMI on an ₹8.6 lakh loan over five years at 9% rises from ₹17,852 to ₹17,957—a difference of ₹105 per month. It is an illustrative calculation tied to those assumptions, not a universal estimate of the effect on borrowers. The direct impact of one quarter-point move may be modest for that example; further tightening or a change in expectations could matter more by affecting confidence and affordability.

What could cool growth beyond the comparison effect?
A slower year-over-year rate would not by itself establish weaker underlying demand. To judge whether momentum is genuinely fading, watch whether retail registrations, dispatches and dealer inventory move together, and whether buyers can absorb higher prices and financing costs.
- Monthly growth against a normalizing base: compare year-over-year rates with sequential movement and remember that October 2025 onward includes months after GST 2.0 took effect.
- Retail versus wholesale conversion: look for sustained gaps between registrations and manufacturer dispatches rather than treating either measure alone as the whole market.
- Dealer stock and order conversion: rising inventory alongside slower registrations may signal weaker replenishment needs; booking and pending-order trends help distinguish postponed delivery from lost demand.
- Vehicle and input prices: the Autocar Professional report says passenger-vehicle prices had risen about 3% over the prior year, citing Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra. That attributed figure is not a measure of every make or model.
- Segment and regional mix: passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles have different buyers and demand drivers. Urban and rural trends, fuel or powertrain mix, and supply availability can reveal divergence hidden by an all-vehicle total.
- Festival timing and supply: deliveries can move between months with festive calendars or availability, so a single monthly registration count can be noisy.
SIAM’s FY2025–26 results and Q1 FY2026–27 figures establish that the industry entered the year with substantial momentum. The September jump adds evidence of strong retail activity, but its comparison base is unusually favorable and dealer stocks were reported above the stated benchmark. The data support a risk of slower growth rates as comparisons toughen—not a firm prediction that absolute vehicle sales must decline.
