Most missing images in Chrome print preview have one of four causes: Chrome is applying print-only CSS, the artwork is a CSS background with Background graphics disabled, an image has not loaded (often because it is lazy-loaded), or a managed policy/PDF viewer is using different controls. Start by identifying the image type and the printing path, then apply the matching fix.
First, identify what Chrome is printing
Chrome does not print the screen exactly as it appears. It creates a print-media rendering, using @media print rules and print optimizations. A page can therefore show pictures in a normal tab while the preview omits them.
There are also two different workflows:
- A webpage: you press
Ctrl+P(Windows/Linux) orCmd+P(macOS) while viewing the site. - A PDF opened in Chrome: the PDF viewer supplies its own print dialog and may expose different options.
Confirm which workflow you are using before changing settings. A missing control in a PDF viewer is not necessarily a problem with the webpage.
Quick fix for a webpage
- Open the original webpage, not a PDF viewer tab.
- Press
Ctrl+Pon Windows/Linux orCmd+Pon macOS. - Expand More settings.
- Enable Background graphics.
- Check the preview again.
Chromium describes this checkbox as the option to print webpage backgrounds. It is the right fix for CSS background images, colored panels, certificate stationery, and decorative artwork painted behind text. It does not generally restore an ordinary foreground <img> that print CSS has hidden or whose source has not loaded.

If “Background graphics” is missing
You may be printing a PDF rather than the webpage, so check the tab and reopen the site itself. On a managed computer, an administrator can set the default for background-graphics printing or prevent users from changing it. If the option is unavailable on a work or school device, contact the administrator.
Why the preview differs from the page
Print media CSS hides or changes the image
When Chrome prepares paper or PDF output, it applies the print media type. Site authors commonly hide navigation, ads, large decorative images, or mobile-only elements to produce a shorter document. Rules such as display: none, visibility: hidden, zero dimensions, opacity: 0, or a print-only replacement image can remove an otherwise visible asset.
The artwork is a CSS background
A background declared with background-image is separate from a foreground image element. Chrome can omit backgrounds as an output-saving measure even when the element remains in the layout. Enable Background graphics and inspect the element that owns the background.
The asset is lazy-loaded or failed to load
Some pages request images only after scrolling, an intersection event, or other JavaScript activity. A network failure, blocked request, authentication requirement, or bot check can leave the print renderer with an empty image box. If the image is absent when you save the preview as a PDF, the issue is in page or print rendering rather than the physical printer.

Chrome is optimizing output
CSS print-color-adjust tells the user agent how much it may alter an element for output. The default value, economy, permits changes such as omitting background images. exact requests preservation, but a user’s print preference still takes priority. It is not a way to force a browser to ignore its print settings.
Fixes for a site you own
Put print-specific corrections in a print stylesheet or an @media print block. This example keeps an important foreground image visible and asks Chromium to preserve intentional colors and backgrounds:

}Use !important sparingly. First inspect the competing rule and fix selector order or specificity where possible. For a background image, apply the adjustment to the element carrying background-image, then instruct users to enable Background graphics.
Check the image’s actual source
- For
<img>, verify the computedsrcor selectedsrcsetcandidate. - For CSS backgrounds, verify the computed
background-imageis notnone. - For SVG or canvas, confirm the drawing is performed before printing and that its dimensions are non-zero.
- For lazy loading, trigger loading before the print command or provide a print-friendly non-lazy image path.
Developer diagnosis in Chrome DevTools
- Open DevTools.
- Open the three-dot menu and choose More tools > Rendering.
- In Emulate CSS media type, select print.
- Inspect the missing node in Elements and Computed.
Chrome’s print-media emulation lets you see the alternate rendering without repeatedly opening the dialog. Compare the element before and after emulation, checking display, visibility, width, height, opacity, generated content, background-image, and the resolved image URL.

Use the failure stage to narrow the cause

Printing a PDF in Chrome
A PDF opened in Chrome is already a paginated document. Its viewer can show a different settings panel from a webpage, including cases where Background graphics is not offered. Do not diagnose a PDF viewer result as proof that the original HTML page cannot print images. Open the source page and test its own print command, or download the PDF and use a dedicated PDF workflow.
Common problems and precise fixes
The checkbox is on, but the image is still missing
The missing item is probably not a CSS background. Inspect whether it is an <img>, SVG, canvas, or a background removed by a more specific print rule. Use DevTools print emulation and check computed styles and dimensions.
Only some images disappear
Different images may use different mechanisms. Compare a working and failing element: one may be a foreground image while the other is a background, lazy-loaded asset, or selector covered by display:none.
The preview is blank or times out
Wait for the page to finish loading, then retry. A failed request, authentication wall, bot check, or script error can prevent the content from being rendered. If the problem affects a site you own, inspect the browser console and network requests before changing print CSS.

Print emulation looks right, but the dialog does not
Check for rules loaded later in the cascade, print-specific stylesheets, and JavaScript that runs only when the print dialog opens. Also test an incognito window to exclude extensions that inject or hide content.
A work computer ignores my setting
Chrome enterprise policy can define the default background-print behavior and can restrict changes. The local browser cannot override a policy-enforced setting; ask the administrator or use an approved unmanaged environment.
