Why Ice Floats—and How It Shapes Earth’s Frozen World

Ice floats because freezing makes water expand into a more open crystal structure, leaving solid ice less dense than liquid water. But “ice” in Earth’s cryosphere is not all the same: glaciers form from snow on land, sea ice freezes from ocean water, icebergs break from land ice, and lakes and rivers freeze from fresh water. Those differences matter for ecosystems, climate and sea level.

Why does ice float?

Water molecules in ice arrange themselves in a relatively open crystal lattice. That structure takes up more space than the same mass of liquid water, making ice less dense, so it floats. The U.S. Geological Survey says water’s density decreases by about 9 percent when it freezes (USGS, “Water Density”).

This is unusual: many substances become denser when they solidify. For water, the expansion on freezing helps explain why ice forms at the surface of lakes and why an iceberg is mostly underwater. The visible tip is only the part above the waterline.

How do glaciers form?

Glacier ice begins as snow that remains on land instead of melting away. As more snow accumulates, its weight compresses older layers. The snow grains change and recrystallize, becoming firn—a dense, granular intermediate stage—and eventually solid glacier ice. Air can remain trapped in bubbles. The U.S. Geological Survey describes glacier ice as a mono-mineralic rock: a rock composed of one mineral, crystalline ice (H₂O) (USGS, “Is glacier ice a type of rock?”).

A glacier is not simply a stationary pile of frozen water. It is a long-lasting accumulation of crystalline ice, snow, rock, sediment and often liquid water that originates on land and moves downslope under gravity. As it deforms under its own weight, it flows outward and downward (NSIDC, “Science of Glaciers”; USGS, “What is a glacier?”).

Snowflakes begin with small hexagonal crystals, but the crystals in glacier ice grow and change as snow is buried, compressed and recrystallized. Glacier ice and the ice in a freezer are still the same substance; their crystal sizes and trapped materials can differ. USGS notes that larger crystals melt more slowly because they expose less surface area per unit of volume (USGS, “Glaciers: Things to Know”).

What is sea ice?

Sea ice is frozen seawater that forms, grows and melts in the ocean. It is distinct from glacier ice, which forms from snow on land. The first sea-ice crystals are tiny, needle-like frazil crystals. As they form, most of the salt is excluded from the ice and concentrated in salty liquid called brine. Some brine becomes trapped within the ice, especially when it is young.

Conditions at the surface shape the ice. In calm water, crystals can form smooth, thin sheets called nilas. In rough water, pieces bump together into rounded pancake ice; collisions can pile them into ridges. As sea ice ages, brine drains away and its salinity falls (NSIDC, “Science of Sea Ice”).

ChefAide 2 Pack Ice Cube Tray, Silicone Ice Cube Trays for Freezer with Lid
  • Make Enough Ice Cubes: Two ice cube trays are included. Each tray can make 14 ice cubes at once , so you'll get 28 ice cubes in total if you use all trays together.
  • Sturdy and Durable: Made of silicone and PP material, our ice cube trays for freezer are sturdy enough to withstand long-term low-temperature storage without breaking. No longer worry about breaking easily. Besides, our silicone bottom is soft enough to release the ice easily, so twisting is no longer needed, which makes the ice trays even more durable
  • Easy to Use: Just fill the tray to the max line, put the cover on, put the tray in your freezer until completely frozen, and lastly pop out the ice cubes. One thing to note is that you'd better wait about 30 seconds before opening the lid when it's frozen. In this way, opening the lid could be effortless. Besides, the tray is super easy to clean and dishwasher safe
  • Stackable Design: The Ice Tray with a removable lid which can not only keep your ice away from any freezer smell, but also enables the trays to stack on top of each other perfectly. And the stackable design is beneficial to space saving, keeping your freezer clean and organized
  • Easy to Release: The ice tray creatively combines plastic and silicone. Top 1/2 of the tray is plastic which helps keep its shape unlike full silicone trays. And the silicone bottom makes it super easy to release the ice. Thus, unlike the old rigid plastic trays, there's no fighting and twisting to get the ice out. Additionally, these trays make rectangular ice cubes which look great in any drink. They are perfect for baby food, cocktail, coffee, fruit, soda, juice, whiskey, etc. With these trays, you can enjoy ice drinks whenever you want

Sea ice, glaciers, icebergs and lake ice are not interchangeable

Type Where and how it forms How it behaves
Sea ice Freezes from salty ocean water. Floats and is moved by wind and currents, except where fastened to coasts; it loses brine as it ages.
Glacier ice Forms on land as accumulated snow compacts and recrystallizes. Flows downslope under gravity.
Iceberg Breaks away from glacier ice or an ice shelf. Floats in the ocean; its melt does not add net water to sea level in the same way as grounded ice melt.
Lake and river ice Freezes from fresh water. Forms on inland freshwater surfaces, rather than from seawater or accumulated land snow.

NASA describes sea ice as floating frozen seawater that forms seasonally in polar regions and influences ocean circulation, weather and regional climate (NASA Earth Observatory, “Sea Ice,” September 16, 2016). Sea ice is not an iceberg: one freezes in the ocean, while the other calves from land-originating ice.

Why is sea ice important?

Ice changes how much incoming sunlight Earth absorbs. Albedo is the fraction of solar energy a surface reflects. NSIDC reports that sea ice reflects 50 to 70 percent of solar energy, compared with about 6 percent for the surrounding ocean; snow-covered sea ice can reflect up to 90 percent. These are reference values, not fixed readings for every surface or condition: snow cover and the state of the ice affect reflectivity (NSIDC, “Quick Facts About Sea Ice”).

When sea ice melts, darker ocean water is exposed and absorbs more sunlight than the ice did. This changes the local energy balance and connects seasonal ice loss with the wider climate system. Sea ice also affects ocean circulation and regional weather, so its importance extends beyond the frozen surface itself.

Does melting ice raise sea levels?

It depends on whether the ice is floating or grounded. Floating sea ice, icebergs, ice shelves and ice tongues already displace seawater. Their melting does not add net water to sea level in the same way as melting grounded glacier ice. By contrast, land-based glacier ice can raise sea level when the ice it melts or discharges into the ocean exceeds the amount added through snowfall (NASA ICESat, “Introduction to Ice”; NSIDC, “What is the Cryosphere?”).
