Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe free alternative is KeePass Password Safe. It replaces a subscription vault with an encrypted KDBX file that you control. That can eliminate recurring fees and give you more direct ownership of your data, but it also makes you responsible for synchronization, backups, recovery and safe migration.
Why switch from a paid password manager?
The reported reason for leaving 1Password was straightforward: recurring cost and a preference for features the author actually used. In 2025, the author estimated spending about $300 over five years and reported a family-plan price of $60 per year at the time. Those are personal figures, not a universal current price, and 1Password pricing can vary by plan, region and billing date.

KeePass changes the payment model. The project describes KeePass Password Safe as free, open source, lightweight password-management software. There is no subscription for the core application. Instead, you download the program and maintain the encrypted database yourself.
What KeePass does differently
KeePass stores credentials in one database protected by a master key. The database normally uses the KDBX format, and you decide where that file lives: on a computer, removable storage or a cloud-synchronized folder. This is a control and privacy choice, not a guarantee that every device or storage provider is secure.

| Consideration | 1Password | KeePass |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | Subscription; the author reported $60 per year for a family plan in 2025 | Free core software |
| Vault ownership | Managed through the service | You hold the encrypted KDBX file |
| Cloud convenience | Built-in service synchronization | You select and configure synchronization |
| Cross-device access | Official apps and account-based access | Desktop KeePass plus compatible mobile clients and file sync |
| Family sharing | Plan feature | No equivalent central family service; sharing requires your own process |
| Breach monitoring | Service feature availability depends on the plan and product | No built-in hosted monitoring service |
| Setup time | Usually shorter because infrastructure is managed | Longer: install clients, arrange sync and test backups |
| Backup responsibility | Primarily handled by the provider, subject to account recovery | Entirely yours |
| Recovery risk | Account-recovery options depend on the service | Loss of the database or master key can leave you without access |
Is KeePass secure enough?
KeePass documentation states that database files are encrypted, including usernames, URLs, notes and passwords. KeePass 2.x supports AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, and its key-derivation settings include Argon2. These protections apply to the KDBX file while it is locked.
Encryption does not protect an unlocked database from malware, screen capture or a compromised operating system. A weak master password, an unsafe plugin, an exposed export file or an insecure sync account can undermine an otherwise strong vault. Use a long, unique master passphrase, keep your operating system and KeePass installation updated, and install only plugins you understand and trust.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
A hardware security key such as a YubiKey is an optional way to add physical authentication to compatible parts of your setup. It is not required to use KeePass, and it does not replace a strong master key or reliable backups.

- Prepare the destination. Install KeePass Password Safe on your computer, create a new database and choose a strong master passphrase. Record the recovery information in a secure offline location before importing anything.
- Export from 1Password. Use its export function to create a CSV file. Treat that file as exposed plaintext: anyone who can read it can read the credentials it contains.
- Import into KeePass. In KeePass, use the import workflow, select the CSV format that matches the export and map fields such as title, username, password, URL and notes. Inspect the first imported records before deleting the source vault.
- Organize and verify. Group entries, remove duplicates and open several important sites to confirm usernames, passwords, URLs and one-time-code notes transferred correctly. Check secure notes and custom fields separately because CSV mappings can differ.
- Delete the export securely. Remove the CSV from the computer, downloads folder, cloud drives, email and recycle bin. Because it is plaintext, do not leave copies in automatic backups or shared folders. This is a precaution for reducing exposure, not a claim that every deletion method provides forensic erasure.
- Set up synchronization. Place the KDBX file in a Dropbox folder or another storage service that works with your devices, then install compatible KeePass clients on Windows and Android. Confirm that each client opens the same database and that the file is encrypted at rest by KeePass.
- Test the routine. Make a harmless change on one device, wait for synchronization to finish, then open the database on the other device. Keep a separate backup copy before relying on the arrangement.
Synchronization rules that prevent conflicts
A cloud folder does not turn KeePass into a conflict-free multi-user service. Avoid editing the database simultaneously on two devices. Close KeePass, wait until Dropbox or the chosen provider reports that synchronization has completed, and only then edit from another device.
- Keep dated backup copies of the KDBX file in a separate location.
- Do not restore an old backup over a newer database without first comparing timestamps and recent changes.
- If a sync conflict creates two files, stop editing, preserve both copies and determine which entries changed before merging.
- Test restoration periodically; a backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.
Who should choose KeePass?
KeePass fits people who value a free, open-source tool, want direct possession of the vault file and are comfortable managing technical details. It is especially attractive when subscription savings matter more than a polished, centrally managed sharing experience.

A hosted manager remains simpler for households that need effortless sharing, automatic synchronization, account recovery or integrated monitoring. KeePass can serve those households, but only if someone accepts responsibility for mobile-client compatibility, backups, synchronization discipline and emergency access.
The practical verdict
KeePass is a credible free alternative to 1Password because its encrypted database, open-source code and local-file model remove the recurring subscription. The price is operational work: you must protect the master key, secure plaintext exports, choose trustworthy clients and sync storage, avoid conflicting edits and maintain recoverable backups. If that trade-off matches your priorities, switching can be financially and technically sensible; if you want those duties managed for you, the subscription may still be worth paying.
