Why bring children to vote?
Senecal says she wants her children to experience voting as an ordinary part of community life. “I want my kids to see democracy in action: something people do, not just something they learn about in school,” she writes.
In the essay, Senecal says her children were 11 and 9 at the time of publication and that she had spent nearly 30 years at the League of Women Voters helping people participate in democracy. Those details give context to her personal account; they are not evidence that bringing children to the polls produces a particular long-term outcome.
How public decisions connect to children’s lives
Senecal explains the stakes in terms children can recognize. Decisions by elected officials can affect community places and services such as schools, parks, playgrounds, pools, libraries, roads, and bike lanes. Her point is that public choices are connected to the surroundings children use every day—not that the essay provides a policy analysis of any specific decision.

Voting is one part of civic participation
Senecal does not present voting as the only way to take part. She describes a broader set of activities families can discuss and practice:
- Learning about issues and asking questions.
- Contacting elected officials.
- Speaking at school-board or city-council meetings.
- Organizing with other people.
“Voting is important, but it’s not the only answer,” she writes. That broader view can help children understand that civic life is not something they must wait until adulthood to begin exploring.

Model participation without choosing their opinions
Senecal says she does not tell her children what to think or whom to support. Instead, she hopes they will look for reliable information, listen, ask questions, and reach their own conclusions. Bringing children along is therefore not a lesson in which answer to choose; it is a chance to show them how an adult participates while respecting their developing independence.
Expect questions—and check the local rules
Senecal acknowledges that voting with her children can take longer because they have questions. Her account makes room for that practical friction alongside the purpose of the visit. Families considering bringing a child should check with their local election office about the rules for accompanying children at polling places. Senecal’s essay does not establish a universal age recommendation or say that children may enter every polling place or handle ballots.

A familiar first step, not a guaranteed outcome
Senecal writes, “No one wakes up on their 18th birthday automatically knowing how to participate in democracy.” Her essay is a personal explanation of why she makes voting visible to her children and talks with them about civic life. It does not report research demonstrating that polling-place visits cause later voting or other specific outcomes.
