A houseplant can sit beside a window and still get leggy because the leaves are not receiving enough usable light for compact growth. Distance from the glass, curtains, screens, outdoor shade, the season and the plant’s own light needs all matter. Move it toward brighter conditions gradually, or add a grow light if no suitable window is bright enough. The stretched stems already there usually will not become compact again, but better conditions can improve new growth.
Why a plant gets leggy even beside a window
Leggy growth—long stems or large gaps between leaves—is usually a sign of inadequate light. A plant may stretch toward the light source, producing weak, sparse growth; low light can also be associated with pale leaves, slow growth or leaf drop. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Integrated Pest Management guidance identifies insufficient light as the usual cause of excessively long petioles or stem sections (UC ANR IPM, “Houseplant Problems”); the University of Minnesota describes long, thin stems and wider spaces between leaf nodes as signs of insufficient light (University of Minnesota Extension, “Lighting for Indoor Plants and Starting Seeds”).

“By a window” does not tell you how much light reaches the leaves
Light intensity falls as a plant sits farther from a window, sometimes quickly. A plant on a nearby table may receive much less light than one on the sill. Window size and direction, curtains, insect screens or tinted glass, trees and buildings outside, roof overhangs and seasonal changes can all affect the light that gets through. A room that looks bright to you may still be dim for a plant (University of Maryland Extension, “Lighting for Indoor Plants”; North Carolina Cooperative Extension, “Light Considerations for Indoor Plants”).

Plants differ in how much light they need to grow densely, and no single window direction guarantees the right conditions in every home. Match the plant to the light actually available; a position that suits a lower-light plant may not provide enough light for one that needs brighter conditions. Light also changes with the seasons (Iowa State University Extension, “How to Care for Houseplants”; University of Illinois Extension, “Houseplants and Indoor Lighting”).

Light is the leading suspect, but check feeding too
Low usable light is the main explanation to investigate, but excessive fertilizer can also contribute to excessive, weak growth. If growth is unusually lush and spindly, review how often and how much you feed rather than responding by automatically adding more fertilizer (Iowa State University Extension, “Diagnosing Houseplant Problems from Improper Environmental Conditions”).
How to give the plant better light
- Check the light reaching the leaves. Note how far the plant is from the glass, whether coverings or outdoor shade block light, and whether the conditions have changed with the season. A light meter or phone app can help compare spots, but neither is essential; observe how new growth develops after a change (Iowa State University Extension, “How to Care for Houseplants”).
- Try a brighter position that suits the plant. Move it closer to a window or to another brighter spot, accounting for its light needs. If available windows do not provide enough light, supplemental lighting is a practical alternative (University of Maryland Extension, “Lighting for Indoor Plants”; University of Minnesota Extension, “Lighting for Indoor Plants and Starting Seeds”).
- Increase exposure gradually. Shift the plant toward stronger light in stages over roughly a week or two instead of suddenly placing it in intense direct sun. Leaves adapted to shade or indoor conditions can scorch after an abrupt change (University of Minnesota Extension, “Spring into houseplant care,” March 2, 2026; University of Maine Cooperative Extension, “Too Much Water or Not Enough Light?”).
- Rotate the pot periodically. Turning it helps different sides receive light when it comes mainly from one direction, reducing one-sided growth. Rotation spreads exposure around the plant; it does not make an overall dim location bright enough (University of Illinois Extension, “Houseplants and Indoor Lighting”).
Would an indoor grow light help?
Consider an indoor grow light for houseplants when you cannot provide enough suitable natural light—for example, if every available window is heavily shaded or the plant cannot be placed close enough to one. First assess whether you can improve its natural-light position; a lamp is a fallback for a real shortfall, not a substitute for identifying the plant’s needs. A light meter is optional for comparing locations, not a required purchase.

Will pruning fix the old stretched stems?
Usually, no: correcting the light improves the conditions for growth to come, but stems that have already stretched generally stay long and thin. Iowa State University Extension notes that previous spindly growth remains after the cause is corrected (Iowa State University Extension, “Diagnosing Houseplant Problems from Improper Environmental Conditions”).

Pruning can tidy a plant or encourage fuller growth in some species, but the right cut depends on the plant’s growth habit. Do not rely on trimming alone to fix the light problem; check plant-specific pruning advice before cutting (University of Minnesota Extension, “Spring into houseplant care,” March 2, 2026).
