Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHorror games use jumpscares for sudden shock and pacing, sound to direct attention or suggest a threat, and limited visibility to leave players unsure what is nearby. These techniques can reinforce one another, but none is a universal recipe: their effect depends on timing, context, and what the player expects.
What each technique does to the player
The three techniques manipulate different parts of the experience. A jumpscare changes the scene abruptly; sound can signal something the player cannot see; restricted sightlines limit what the player can know. Together, they can make a quiet stretch feel charged before anything is revealed.

| Jumpscare | A sudden visual or auditory event delivers a shock. | Contrast, pacing, and anticipation of another scare. |
| Sound | A cue draws attention or suggests an event beyond the visible scene. | Interpretation and uncertainty about the cue’s cause. |
| Limited visibility | Obscures parts of the environment. | Uncertainty that encourages players to imagine what might be present. |
Why jumpscares are more than a loud surprise
They punctuate a longer rhythm
A jumpscare can produce an immediate shock, but horror developers describe it as one element in a broader rhythm of dread, quieter moments, and reveals. Dion Lay, lead writer on Alien: Isolation, called them “one of the minor tools—more like a bit of spice you add to the main course” and said that, used well, they can help maintain pace and tension without exhausting the player. A fake-out or a sudden event can create contrast with a stretch of anticipation; the scare is not necessarily the whole experience.
Expectation can become part of the scare
Once players know a game may use jumpscares, they can start anticipating one even when nothing happens. Frictional Games creative director Thomas Grip said that this expectation can add to fear in other scenes. In that sense, a scare may affect the moments around it: the possibility of another sudden event can make a quiet passage feel less safe.

Measured arousal and reported feeling are not the same
A 2023 between-subject study by Thomas Terkildsen, Lene Engel Christensen, and Mathias Clasen involved 60 participants and varied mental workload through tasks of different difficulty. The researchers found a significant linear relationship between workload and physiological arousal from a jumpscare, but not the same relationship in participants’ subjective reports of arousal. That distinction matters: a measured physical response does not automatically mean a player says they felt more aroused. The result concerns the study’s specific tasks and sample, not every player or game. Read the study in Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction.
How sound can make an unseen threat feel present
Sound can provide information without showing its source. A noise from outside the player’s field of view might indicate movement, but if the game does not explain it, the player has to interpret the cue. That gap between hearing something and knowing what caused it can make an imagined threat feel more immediate than a fully visible one.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
In an interview about Darkwood, developer Gustaw Stachaszewski described the appeal of seeing or hearing objects move without knowing what caused the motion or sound. Sound in this kind of design does not simply announce a danger; it can leave open whether the danger is real, near, or understood correctly.
Audio design can influence fear, but the evidence is preliminary
A 2010 conference paper by Garner, Grimshaw, and Nabi reported that coarse manipulation of audio parameters had potential to influence fear intensity during survival-horror play. It was preliminary work, so it supports the possibility that sound design can shape fear rather than establishing a general effect that applies across games. Read the paper from Audio Mostly 2010.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
A 2025 IEEE conference-paper abstract reported stronger physical reactions to simultaneous audio and visual danger cues when the scare was unexpected and the sound was loud enough to break tension. The abstract also emphasized fitting audio and visual elements to the wider game. Because the accessible record is an abstract, it does not establish a universal result or provide a basis here for claims about the experiment’s sample or procedure. See the IEEE conference-paper record.
How limited visibility turns missing information into tension
When a game restricts what players can see, it withholds information they might use to judge what is safe. A sound or a flicker of movement beyond a clear sightline can therefore carry more weight: the player knows something may have happened but cannot immediately verify what it was.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Darkwood is one developer example. Its field of view sharply limits what is clear around the player; peripheral space remains obscured, so the player has to turn to inspect other directions. Stachaszewski said the team found it compelling to experience horror that stimulates imagination and lets the mind fill in blanks rather than simply presenting a threat outright. This describes the developers’ approach to one game, not a guarantee that obscured vision will work the same way for every player or title. The techniques can operate in sequence. Restricted visibility may hide a source; a sound can make the player suspect something is moving; a sudden reveal may then punctuate the uncertainty. Or the game can withhold the reveal, leaving the player to anticipate it. The combination lets a designer vary how much information the player receives and when.

That is a design option, not a proven ranking. The available sources do not establish that jumpscares, sound, or limited visibility is the best method, nor do they provide a broad survey of player preferences or a universal effect size. Developer interviews explain intent; the cited studies test specific conditions and measures. The useful takeaway is that tension can come from shock, from interpreting a cue, or from not knowing what is there—and a game can move among those effects.
