Focus Features reportedly submitted Obsession for consideration in the Golden Globes’ musical-or-comedy film categories, according to The Guardian’s October 2, 2026 report. That is a campaign submission—not a nomination, final category ruling, or change to the film’s genre: Focus Features identifies it as horror.
What is Obsession about?
Focus Features lists Obsession as a horror film released May 15, 2026. Its official film page describes a hopeless romantic who breaks the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, only to discover that the wish comes with a dark price. Curry Barker wrote and directed the film; the listed cast includes Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter.

Why submit a horror film in musical-or-comedy?
The Guardian reports that the Globes’ major film categories are divided between drama and musical or comedy, leaving horror films with an awkward fit. The reported submission appears to be a campaign choice about which category to seek consideration in—not a claim that Obsession is a conventional comedy.

Focus Features’ own horror label and wish-gone-wrong synopsis likewise make clear why the category choice has drawn attention. A film’s tone and a distributor’s awards-category submission are separate things.

Does the submission mean Obsession is nominated?
No. Submission means the film has been put forward for consideration in the reported category. IndiaTimes reported on October 1, 2026 that the film had not received a nomination at that time; the report’s headline framed the audience reaction with the question, “What’s funny about a girl losing control of herself?” No final category approval or nomination is established by the available reporting.
Is this unusual for horror at the Globes?
The Guardian presents the choice as part of a recurring category-fit debate: horror has had limited success in both major film fields, while genre-blurring movies can cross audience expectations about what belongs in drama or comedy. It cites The Exorcist as a drama winner, says The Silence of the Lambs was pitched as a drama, and points to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as a musical-or-comedy winner that genuinely includes songs. The examples illustrate different category routes; they do not establish a rule that horror must enter one field or the other.

- Runtime: 109 minutes
The Guardian also points to The Substance and Get Out as recent horror successes in awards conversations. Those precedents help explain why campaigns may seek a category that seems strategically viable, but they do not predict whether Obsession will be nominated.
When are the nominations and ceremony?
IndiaTimes reported on October 1, 2026 that nominations for the 84th Golden Globes were scheduled to be announced on December 7, 2026, with the ceremony scheduled for January 10, 2027. Those are dates reported as scheduled, not guarantees of an outcome. The available reporting does not confirm whether the submission will be accepted in the category or whether the film will be nominated.
