The Mac’s built-in display and the monitor may have different brightness and contrast capabilities, and the result also depends on macOS settings, the monitor’s HDR mode, the content and app, the connection path, and room lighting. Apple notes that HDR quality generally improves with better display brightness and contrast, and that perceived brightness and color can vary by Mac model and viewing environment (Apple Support: Play HDR video on Mac).
Why the same HDR video can look different on two screens
HDR is not a promise that every compatible display will produce the same picture. Displays differ in brightness and contrast, which affect how much of an HDR image’s range they can show. A built-in Mac display and an external monitor can therefore render the same material differently even when both are working as intended.

The comparison also depends on the full playback chain: the Mac and macOS, the external display and its selected input, any cable, adapter or intermediary device, and the app or service playing the video. Room lighting affects how the picture is perceived, too. Apple’s guidance describes these factors, but without the specific models and setup it is not possible to identify one exact cause.

- Confirm the Mac and display support external HDR. Apple requires a compatible Mac and an HDR10-compatible external display. Supported Mac models vary by family; for example, external HDR on MacBook Air requires an Apple silicon model. Check Apple’s Mac HDR compatibility guidance for your model rather than assuming all Macs support the same external HDR features.
- Enable HDR in macOS if the control is available. Open System Settings > Displays, select the external display, and turn on High Dynamic Range. Apple says this control appears for third-party displays that support HDR10; if it is absent, confirm compatibility and the connection before treating it as a fault.
- Check the monitor’s own HDR setting and input. Enable HDR in the monitor’s on-screen menu if it has a separate setting. Some TVs accept HDR only on particular HDMI inputs, so check the display manual. Apple also recommends checking for current monitor firmware.
- Verify the entire connection path. For HDMI, Apple says the cable and adapter must support HDR10. If the Mac connects through an AV receiver, sound bar or other device, confirm that device supports HDR10 and has current firmware. As a diagnostic, connect the Mac directly to the monitor or TV. Check the exact Mac, display and adapter documentation for supported ports and formats.
- Confirm that the app and content play HDR on Mac. HDR support must extend to the playback app or content provider; a display’s HDR capability alone does not make every video HDR. Apple says Dolby Vision and HLG are converted to HDR10 on other HDR10-compatible external displays. The built-in Mac display and Pro Display XDR support Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG (Apple Support).
Compare the screens under consistent viewing conditions
Room lighting changes the perceived effect of HDR. Apple says lower lighting can enhance HDR’s visual effect, and that apparent brightness and color may vary with the Mac and environment. Compare the screens in the same room and lighting rather than judging one in bright ambient light and the other in a darker setting.

Also check whether Night Shift is enabled. It warms screen colors, so displayed colors no longer accurately reflect the content’s values. Apple’s display workflow guidance explains this color-related limitation.
Use display presets for the workflow they are meant for
A display preset sets characteristics such as color space, white point, gamma and brightness. Presets are not universal HDR fixes: available choices depend on the Mac and display, and selecting one can change the image to suit a particular task.

Apple describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) as a reference mode for controlled 4K or UHD video-production workflows, not a general setting for everyday HDR viewing. Apple’s guide specifies workflows up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained for this mode; that figure describes the workflow guidance, not a guarantee that every connected monitor can produce that brightness. If you are choosing a monitor, compare more than the HDR label
For a purchase decision, compare HDR10 compatibility, brightness and contrast, then verify that the exact Mac-to-display connection supports HDR10. The word “HDR” by itself does not establish that two screens will match or that a display is suitable for reference work. Apple does not identify one general-purpose monitor as the answer to this issue.

What to gather if the difference persists
To narrow down a specific setup, note the Mac model and year, macOS version, monitor model and selected input, cable and adapter, any device between the Mac and screen, and the app or content where the difference occurs. These details distinguish a compatibility or setting issue from the expected variation between displays.
