Gyroscope drift is accumulated orientation error. A MEMS gyro measures angular rate, not absolute angle; when its measured rate contains even a tiny offset (bias), software integrates that offset and the reported orientation slowly walks away from reality. Heat is a common trigger because sensor self-heating and changes in ambient temperature alter the bias after a cold-start calibration.
The practical remedy is to let the device reach a stable temperature, keep it motionless, run the correct calibration, and use sensor fusion or the operating system’s processed motion interface. If drift survives those steps across stable temperatures and reboots, treat repeated calibration failure as a possible hardware or mounting problem rather than endlessly recalibrating.

What gyroscope drift actually means
A gyroscope reports rotation rate, usually in degrees per second or radians per second. To obtain an angle, the flight controller or phone software integrates those samples over time. If the true rate is zero but the sensor reports a constant 0.1 degrees per second, the calculated angle is wrong by about 6 degrees after one minute and 360 degrees after one hour. The error grows because integration turns a rate offset into an ever-increasing angle error.

It can be fixed for a particular moment, or it can change with temperature, supply conditions, vibration and mechanical stress. A calibration value measured on a cool, motionless device is therefore not a permanent correction. As the electronics warm during a demanding game or a flight, the bias can move and the horizon, gimbal or on-screen crosshair begins to drift.

Bias, noise and scale error are different
- Bias: a steady offset that integrates into a steadily growing angle error. This is the main cause of “drifting while still.”
- Noise: rapid random variation around the true rate. Filtering can smooth it, but noise alone does not create a one-direction walk as quickly as bias.
- Scale-factor error: the gyro reports a rate that is consistently too large or too small. The error is most obvious during movement and is often corrected during factory calibration.
- Misalignment and vibration: motion on one axis can leak into another, especially when a drone frame or phone sensor is poorly mounted.
An Android Open Source Project sensor-types example illustrates the scale of the issue: a gyro chip can have a 1 degree/second bias range that falls below 0.01 degree/second after factory temperature and bias compensation. Those are illustrative platform figures, not a specification for every phone.
Why heat makes a phone or drone gyro drift
MEMS gyros use microscopic vibrating structures. Their electrical and mechanical properties vary as temperature changes, shifting the zero-rate output. The gyro also warms itself and may be heated by the application processor, display, battery, motors or sunlight. Consequently, a calibration made immediately after startup can become stale within minutes.
Apple’s Core Motion documentation cautions that “The raw rotation rate data delivered by the gyroscope interfaces may be biased by other factors such as temperature.” Xiaomi similarly attributes short-term crosshair drift during demanding games to heat and notes that its temperature-compensation algorithm may need time to learn the current condition.

On drones, motor and electronics heat can change the IMU bias during a flight. Espressif’s ESP-Drone documentation states: “Due to large temperature drift, the gyroscope needs to be calibrated before each use, to calculate its reference values in current environment.” This is why a controller that was level on a workbench can show a crooked horizon after the aircraft warms up.
Cold-start calibration versus operating-temperature calibration
A calibration performed immediately after powering on measures the sensor at that moment. If the aircraft or phone then warms substantially, the old bias no longer matches. Conversely, calibrating while the device is hot and then using it in cold air can produce a different error. The goal is not a universally perfect number; it is a bias estimate appropriate to the current thermal state and mounting.
How calibration removes the initial bias
During a stationary calibration, the controller assumes that the true angular rate is zero. It collects many gyro samples, rejects motion-contaminated data or asks the user to keep still, and averages the remaining values. That average becomes the bias estimate subtracted from subsequent readings.

ESP-Drone’s 1024-sample method
Espressif’s open flight-controller reference implementation uses 1,024 stationary gyro readings and averages them to calculate the reference value. The estimated bias is subtracted from each axis, after which a low-pass filter is applied. Averaging reduces random noise; it cannot correct motion during the sampling window or a bias that changes later with temperature.

- The device must be completely motionless. Do not hold a phone in your hand or touch a powered drone during sampling.
- The mounting orientation must match the controller’s instructions. A level surface matters when the system also checks accelerometer gravity.
- The temperature should be representative of use. Allow a drone or phone to settle rather than calibrating immediately after transport or a cold start.
- Vibration, a spinning motor, a fan blowing on the sensor or a soft surface can corrupt the estimate.
Fixing drift on a drone: the safe sequence
1. Stop flying and inspect the warning
If the flight app reports an IMU, attitude or sensor fault, do not take off to “see whether it clears.” An unresolved attitude estimate can make the aircraft tilt unexpectedly. Land, power down if necessary and remove propellers before bench troubleshooting.
2. Let the aircraft reach a stable temperature
Place the powered aircraft in the intended environment and let its temperature settle. Keep it still while the sensors initialize. Avoid calibrating immediately after a hot car, direct sun, a battery change or a long flight unless the manufacturer specifically calls for a warm calibration.
3. Use a level, dry surface
In the DJI Fly app, the current guidance is … > Safety > Sensor > IMU > Calibration. Follow every prompted orientation exactly. DJI’s calibration guidance says to place the aircraft on a level and dry surface; incorrect placement can cause calibration failure. Menu names and supported aircraft can change, so follow the prompts shown for your model.
4. Keep every prompted face still
When the app asks for a particular side or attitude, put the aircraft down gently and wait for the progress indicator to complete. Do not rotate it early, press on an arm, or allow a cable to tug it. A table that rocks under the aircraft can be enough to invalidate a sample.
5. Restart once, then retry precisely
If calibration fails, restart the aircraft and controller once, confirm the surface is level, and repeat the procedure without improvising the orientations. Repeated retries on a warm, vibrating or uneven setup do not improve the estimate.

6. Escalate persistent failures
DJI lists IMU data errors, sensor damage and transport shock among reasons calibration can fail and directs users to service testing. If the warning returns after a correct calibration, or if the horizon remains crooked after temperature stabilization, stop flying and arrange manufacturer diagnostics. A bent frame, loose IMU mount, damaged sensor or connector can mimic software drift.
Fixing gyro drift on a phone
1. Remove the immediate heat source
Stop the motion-heavy game, camera session or augmented-reality app. Remove a thick case if it traps heat, disconnect high-power charging, and place the phone on a stable surface in a normal indoor environment. Do not cool it with ice or condensation.
2. Wait for thermal stabilization
Short-term drift can continue while the phone’s temperature-compensation algorithm learns the new condition. Keep the handset still until the crosshair, horizon or motion cursor settles. Recalibrating while the phone is still heating simply records a moving target.
3. Prefer processed motion interfaces
When an application needs orientation rather than raw angular-rate data, use the operating system’s device-motion or attitude interface. Apple says its Core Motion interfaces apply algorithms intended to remove gyro bias, combining the gyro with other sensors. This generally produces a more stable orientation than integrating raw rotation-rate samples in application code.
4. Choose Android streams deliberately
Android exposes calibrated and uncalibrated gyroscope streams. The uncalibrated stream includes an estimated per-axis bias and avoids some sudden correction jumps; an application must then estimate and remove drift itself. The calibrated stream is easier for ordinary apps, but the platform may apply a new calibration and cause a small discontinuity. Android’s documentation warns that app-managed fusion must account for such calibration changes.
5. Check for a persistent hardware problem
If drift appears after every reboot, at a stable temperature and in multiple applications, run the phone maker’s sensor diagnostics. A sensor that is damaged, poorly mounted or affected by a severe drop can remain biased despite software calibration. Back up important data before service, because a repair center may reset or replace the device.

Can sensor fusion stop gyroscope drift?
Fusion cannot make a defective gyro perfect, but it can bound the error by comparing the integrated gyro with references that do not drift in the same way.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Accelerometer: absolute roll and pitch reference
When a device is not accelerating strongly, the accelerometer measures gravity. Gravity supplies a “down” direction, allowing a filter to correct roll and pitch accumulated from the gyro. During a hard turn, vibration or linear acceleration, the accelerometer is not a pure gravity measurement, so a good filter reduces its authority temporarily.
Magnetometer: heading reference with environmental limits
A magnetometer can constrain yaw relative to Earth’s magnetic field. Steel desks, speakers, motors and electrical current distort that field, so heading corrections may be wrong indoors or near a drone’s power system. Calibration of the compass and rejection of magnetic disturbances remain necessary.
Vision and GNSS: additional outdoor or scene references
Optical flow, visual-inertial tracking and other camera-based systems can provide position and orientation information when the scene has texture and adequate light. GNSS supplies an outdoor position and course reference when signals are available, but it is not a fast, precise attitude reference while stationary. These sources complement rather than replace gyro calibration.
Why fusion can appear to “jump”
A filter that discovers a changed bias must correct the integrated attitude. The visible result can be a small snap or a gradual pull toward the reference. Android specifically warns developers using uncalibrated data to handle calibration jumps. A jump is often preferable to an angle that drifts indefinitely, but applications should smooth transitions where safety permits.

Do not compare nominal drift numbers from unrelated products without matching temperature, duration, vibration, bandwidth and test conditions. For context, OSCP lists 0.5 degrees/hour in-run bias stability for its MK2M2 industrial IMU under specified product conditions in 2026; that figure is not a phone or consumer-drone expectation.

Symptoms and likely causes
- Drift begins after a few minutes of gaming: heat changed the phone’s bias; cool it, wait, and use a processed motion interface.
- Drone horizon is crooked immediately after startup: calibration was performed on an uneven surface, the aircraft moved during initialization, or the IMU has a mounting problem.
- Horizon slowly tilts as motors run: motor vibration or heat is changing the estimate; inspect propellers, mounts and temperature behavior.
- Compass heading swings near a vehicle or metal table: magnetic interference, not necessarily gyro drift.
- Calibration fails at the same step repeatedly: incorrect orientation, movement, an unstable surface or a damaged sensor; retry once exactly, then seek service.
- Only one application drifts: that app may be integrating raw or uncalibrated data incorrectly; compare with the system motion diagnostic or another app.
How developers should design around drift
Use the right sensor abstraction
For a user-facing orientation, select the platform’s fused attitude or device-motion API when available. Request raw gyro data only when the application has a clear need, such as control, analysis or custom estimation.
Track bias as a state, not a constant
A robust estimator models bias as slowly varying. It can update the bias when the device is known to be stationary and when accelerometer, magnetic, visual or GNSS residuals are trustworthy. Freeze or down-weight those corrections during high acceleration, magnetic interference or poor visual tracking.
Handle calibration events explicitly
Expose sensor accuracy and calibration-state changes to the application. When a new bias estimate arrives, either blend the attitude correction over a safe interval or re-anchor the user interface. Never assume that an uncalibrated stream’s bias estimate is already removed.
Log temperature and vibration during diagnosis
When investigating a field failure, record sensor temperature if the platform exposes it, timestamps, raw rates, estimated bias, accelerometer magnitude and vibration indicators. A bias that changes with temperature points toward compensation or thermal design; a sudden step after impact points toward mechanical or sensor damage.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the device hot? Stop the workload and let it stabilize.
- Was it moving during startup or calibration? Repeat on a rigid, level surface.
- Does drift affect only yaw or also roll and pitch? Yaw suggests gyro or magnetic-reference issues; roll and pitch often implicate gravity handling, vibration or mounting.
- Does a processed motion interface remain stable? If yes, the raw-data consumer likely needs better fusion.
- Does the fault persist across reboots, temperatures and applications? Run diagnostics and contact the manufacturer.
- Is a drone reporting an unresolved IMU fault? Do not fly it until calibration succeeds or service clears the fault.
When repeated calibration means repair
Calibration is appropriate for a changed operating condition; it is not a cure for a physically damaged IMU. Service is the safer choice when the same calibration step fails repeatedly on a verified level, dry surface; when drift returns immediately after a successful calibration; when the aircraft or phone has suffered a drop or transport shock; or when the error is present at every temperature and in every application. DJI’s guidance specifically associates persistent IMU data errors with sensor damage and directs users to service testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my phone gyro drift when it gets hot?
Heat changes the MEMS gyro’s bias. Stop the demanding app, let the handset cool and stabilize on a stationary surface, and use the operating system’s processed motion interface when possible.
How do I recalibrate a drone IMU?
Let the aircraft reach a stable temperature, keep it still on a level, dry surface, then open DJI Fly’s … > Safety > Sensor > IMU > Calibration and follow every orientation prompt. Retry once after a restart if needed; persistent failures require service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can sensor fusion stop gyroscope drift completely?
Fusion can bound drift by correcting the gyro with gravity, magnetic, visual or GNSS references, but it cannot repair a damaged sensor and may make corrections appear as small jumps.
When does repeated calibration failure mean the IMU needs repair?
When calibration repeatedly fails on a correct level surface, drift returns immediately after success, or the device has suffered shock and remains faulty across temperatures and reboots, stop operation and use manufacturer diagnostics.
