Rockstar says GTA VI will satirize contemporary culture, but usually through exaggerated fictional versions rather than direct copies of particular people, events or movements. Rupert Humphries, the studio’s senior vice president of narrative, says the aim is to make the game’s world feel rooted in its moment without simply reproducing the world outside players’ windows.
What Rockstar said about GTA VI’s satire
In a LOVE Magazine interview, Humphries said Rockstar does not want to recreate everyday reality exactly. Developing a game takes several years, he explained, so the team looks for contemporary material that can still feel meaningful when the game is released. He cited conspiracy theories and the ways people react to everyday events as examples of phenomena that can inform the fictional world.

Does that mean GTA VI will avoid current politics?
No. The remarks are about avoiding overly specific, one-to-one portrayals—not avoiding contemporary subjects altogether. Humphries said Rockstar wants the game to feel specific to the moment it is released while not being “too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that.” In practice, that points to satire aimed at broader patterns and attitudes through fictional exaggeration, rather than a promise to leave topical issues out.
The interview also describes fictional political talk shows and campaign material, including signs, robocalls and radio commercials. Why fictional exaggeration can outlast a topical reference
A direct parody of a specific headline, public figure or political moment can be sharply recognizable when a game is written, then feel dated by the time the game reaches players. Rockstar’s stated approach is to use real-world phenomena as a starting point, then distort them into a fictional, larger-than-life version. That gives the satire room to comment on recognizable behavior without depending on a precise copy of one real-world subject.

Satire and gameplay realism are different design choices
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development and co-studio head, made a separate point about realism and gameplay. He said that drawing a parallel with real life can sometimes help an experience, while other real-world details may be better omitted if they do not fit what the game is trying to do.
