Grand Theft Auto VI is listed as R18+ in Australia. The Australian Classification Database entry dated 27 August 2026 gives the consumer advice: “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” R18+ is a legal age restriction for adults 18 and over, not an advisory label. The classification record is available at Australian Classification.
The wording identifies the content areas the authority considers most impactful or frequent, but it is not a scene-by-scene inventory. It does not establish exactly what happens, how often it happens, which substances appear, or how any scene is presented.

The current Australian rating for GTA 6
The latest cited Australian Classification Database record for Grand Theft Auto VI is dated 27 August 2026. It lists the game as R18+ and gives this exact consumer advice: “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” The entry identifies the title as a multi-platform computer game and gives the category detail “Demonstration (Self Selected).”

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnder the Australian Classification guidance, R18+ is reserved for high-impact content and is legally restricted to people aged 18 or older. A retailer or platform may ask for proof of age before allowing an R18+ game to be bought or accessed. The official explanation of the category is in What are the ratings?.
#1 Best Overall
This distinction matters. An R18+ mark is not a review score, a statement about whether the game is good, or a prediction about whether every player will find it offensive. It is a statutory access classification intended to help people make informed choices while enforcing an adult-only threshold.
What “high impact violence, sex scenes and drug use” actually tells you
The three phrases are the authority’s concise description of the most significant content areas in the classified material. They should be read as categories of concern, not as a detailed plot summary.
High impact violence
“High impact violence” signals that violence was assessed at the high-impact end of the classification framework. The notice does not specify individual weapons, missions, injuries, camera angles, frequency or realism. Those details cannot be inferred from the short advice alone.
Sex scenes
“Sex scenes” confirms that sexual activity is among the content the notice flags. The wording does not say whether scenes are brief or extended, interactive or non-interactive, explicit or implied, or where they occur in the story. It is therefore unsafe to turn the phrase into a claim about particular characters or scenes.
Drug use
“Drug use” identifies drug-related material as another flagged area. The entry does not name substances, describe whether use is shown, discussed or playable, or say whether it is rewarded or condemned. Those are separate questions from the classification wording.

Why consumer advice is selective
Australian Classification describes consumer advice as a decision aid that points to the most impactful and frequent content. It is not required to list every element that appears in a game. The normal classification elements are themes, violence, language, drug use, nudity and sex. For games, notices can also address online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.
The GTA VI R18+ record cited here lists only “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” It does not provide additional notices about online interactivity, purchases or simulated gambling. That omission should not be treated as proof that those features are absent from the eventual product; it only tells you what appears on this particular record. The guidance and category explanations are available from Australian Classification.

The authority describes ratings as information to help people decide what to watch, play or read. Parents, carers and adult players still need to decide whether the content is appropriate for the intended person.
How Australian authorities decide a game’s classification
Classification decision-makers consider six classifiable elements: themes, violence, sex, language, drug use and nudity. They assess both the impact of the material and its context. The official process is explained in How a rating is decided.
Impact factors
Impact is shaped by the material’s frequency, intensity and overall effect. Detail, duration, realism and interactivity can increase impact. A short, stylised reference may be treated differently from repeated, realistic and interactive depiction, even when both involve the same broad subject.

- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Context factors
Context includes how the work treats the material. A story may condemn, satirise, normalise or reward conduct, and that framing can affect the assessment. Because the published GTA VI entry does not include the full assessment report, it does not identify which individual element or combination of elements determined the R18+ outcome.

Australian law requires consumer advice when the Classification Board, Classification Review Board or an approved classification tool classifies computer games in categories that include R18+. The governing legislation is the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995.
The annual report for 2023–24 explains that decisions made with approved tools are entered in the National Classification Database. It also says a tool decision can be revoked if the Board would have classified the material differently or would have changed its consumer advice. That establishes the oversight framework, but it does not document the administrative history connecting the two GTA VI records described below.
Why an older GTA 6 record says MA15+
Searches can surface an earlier, separate database record dated 25 June 2025. That entry lists Grand Theft Auto VI as MA15+ through the IARC Global Rating Tool. Its advice is much longer: “strong violence, strong sexual references, sexualised imagery, strong nudity, strong sex scenes, strong coarse language and strong crude humour.”
That 2025 record should not be presented as the current Australian rating when referring to the later dated entry. The two records differ in date, process category, classification and advice.

- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
| Record | Date | Process or category detail | Classification | Consumer advice | What the official record establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier entry | 25 June 2025 | IARC Global Rating Tool | MA15+ | Strong violence; strong sexual references; sexualised imagery; strong nudity; strong sex scenes; strong coarse language; strong crude humour | A separate database record with its own advice and process label. View the 2025 entry. |
| Later cited entry | 27 August 2026 | “Demonstration (Self Selected)” | R18+ | “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use” | The later dated record and the adult-only Australian classification. View the 2026 entry. |
The available official material does not say whether the later record was an appeal, a revoked tool result, a resubmission or a final “upgrade.” It is more accurate to describe the entries as separate records and identify their dates and processes than to claim an undocumented administrative sequence.
What R18+ means for players and families
It is a legal restriction, not the same as M
R18+ is legally limited to adults aged 18 and over. M, by contrast, is an advisory category rather than the same adult-only legal restriction. MA15+ is a different legally restricted category with a different age threshold. Do not substitute one label for another when deciding whether someone can legally obtain or play the game.
Age checks may occur at purchase or access
Because R18+ is restricted, a shop, digital storefront or other distributor may request proof of age. Requirements can vary by seller and delivery method, so an age check should be expected rather than treated as an error.
The notice cannot answer every family-suitability question
The three-part advice gives a quick warning about violence, sex and drugs. It does not describe language, themes, nudity, gambling-style mechanics, online conduct or the emotional context of individual scenes unless those matters appear in the listed advice. Families who need a more granular decision should consult the classification entry again near release and consider the game’s own settings and platform controls.
Platform and release context
PlayStation Australia lists GTA VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a release date of 19 November 2026. The page says it will not be playable on PS4 and describes the game as a single-player experience. This information comes from the PlayStation Australia game page; it is platform information, not evidence for the Australian classification itself.
Best Value
Keeping those facts separate prevents a common mistake: a console listing can tell you where and when a game is sold, while the Classification Database determines the Australian age category and consumer advice.
How to check the rating before buying or giving access
- Open the official title record. Use the current GTA VI listing at Australian Classification, rather than relying on a retailer’s abbreviated label.
- Check the decision date. Confirm whether you are looking at the 27 August 2026 R18+ record or the separate 25 June 2025 MA15+ record.
- Read the exact advice. For the later record, the wording is “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” Do not import the longer descriptors from the earlier record into the later one.
- Confirm the platform and edition. Match the listing to the PS5 or PS5 Pro version and the 19 November 2026 release information if you are checking a console purchase.
- Recheck close to release. Classification records and consumer advice can change. The Australian guidance recommends checking nearer a title’s release when a rating is not yet available; the same caution is sensible here because the cited record predates launch.
What this rating does not establish
- It does not provide a complete list of missions, characters, weapons or scenes.
- It does not state how often violence, sex scenes or drug use occur.
- It does not identify particular drugs or explain whether use is interactive, optional or rewarded.
- It does not reveal the context, realism, duration or presentation of each flagged scene.
- It does not, by itself, confirm or rule out online features, in-game purchases, chance-based purchases or simulated gambling.
- It does not explain the administrative relationship between the 2025 IARC record and the 2026 “Demonstration (Self Selected)” record.
Those limits are important because classification advice is designed to be concise. Treat it as an official warning about the strongest or most frequent content, not as a substitute for a full content guide or a review.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could the Australian rating change before GTA VI releases?
Yes. Classification records and consumer advice can be updated or superseded. Check the Australian Classification Database again close to the 19 November 2026 release date and use the newest dated record.
Does the R18+ entry prove that GTA VI has multiplayer or gambling features?
No. The cited entry’s advice covers high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use, but it does not establish the presence or absence of online interactivity, purchases, chance-based purchases or simulated gambling.
Why should I not combine the 2025 and 2026 advice?
They are separate dated records created under different process labels. Descriptors from the 2025 IARC Global Rating Tool entry are not details supplied by the later R18+ record.
