Repeated exposure can make familiar violent imagery feel less emotionally striking. Psychologists describe this kind of reduced response as habituation or desensitization. It can help explain why a scene that once felt shocking may later seem routine, but it does not mean every player changes, approves of violence, or becomes less empathetic in real life.
Why familiar game violence may lose its shock
A new or unexpected image can command attention and provoke a strong emotional response. When similar imagery appears repeatedly, that response may diminish. This ordinary pattern of adjustment is often called habituation; desensitization is a related term used when discussing reduced emotional responsiveness to violent media.

In a game, repetition can come from seeing similar scenes across many sessions or encountering the same material again during play. The narrower claim supported by available findings is that repeated exposure can reduce some responses to violent content. It is not a rule that applies to every player or every kind of game.
What studies have actually measured
“Impact” can mean different things: sympathy for a fictional victim, guilt while playing, an attitude toward violence, or a bodily response to violent material. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and a finding about one does not establish a change in all the others.

Repeated viewing of movie scenes
In a 2009 study, Fanti showed participants nine violent movie scenes and nine comedy scenes. The study’s abstract reported that repeated exposure reduced the short-term psychological impact of media violence; participants tended to show less sympathy toward victims and greater enjoyment of the violent scenes. Because this was a movie study, it supports a point about repeated media exposure, not a direct conclusion about video-game play. Study abstract.
Repeated play and guilt during a game
A 2017 longitudinal experiment found that repeated play reduced a game’s ability to elicit guilt. That is directly relevant to responses during later game-play experiences, but it is a specific emotional outcome—not a general measure of empathy or behavior outside the game. Study summary.

Reported exposure and empathy in children
Funk and colleagues’ 2004 study collected measures from 150 fourth- and fifth-grade students. Reported exposure to violent video games was associated with lower empathy; reported exposure to violence in games and movies was associated with stronger pro-violence attitudes. The authors said the study did not investigate causality, so it cannot show that game exposure caused those differences. They also noted that the sample’s relatively low exposure to real-life violence could limit interpretation. Study abstract.

A 2017 paper reviewing the American Psychological Association task force assessment summarized associations between violent-game exposure and outcomes including increased desensitization and decreased empathy. A 2021 review concluded that exposure increases desensitization risk, with a focus on children and adolescents. These are review-level conclusions, not proof of a universal causal effect on every player. 2017 review; 2021 review.

- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
A 2006 experiment examined physiological desensitization to real-life violence following game exposure. Its introduction noted that experimental research on that specific outcome was limited. It therefore should not be treated as settling whether a muted response to game violence carries over to real-life violence. Study summary.
What a reduced reaction does—and does not—mean
Feeling less shocked by familiar fictional gore is not, by itself, evidence of moral approval, a lack of empathy, or a change in real-world conduct. The studies above examine distinct outcomes and use different methods; some involve movies, some games, and some children. A person’s own reaction to a game cannot diagnose desensitization or predict how they would respond outside it.

We stand behind our product with a hassle-free replacement policy—ensuring you’re back to gaming without worry, no questions asked.
- Less surprise: Familiar imagery may no longer command the same attention or produce the same immediate reaction.
- Less sympathy or guilt in a study: These are specific measured responses, not interchangeable with overall empathy.
- Real-world attitudes or behavior: The evidence described here does not establish that a player’s reduced reaction to fictional violence means they accept or will enact real-world violence.
How to interpret claims about violent games
When evaluating a claim, check what was repeated, who took part, and what outcome researchers measured. A short-term movie-viewing result is not a game-play experiment; an association in children is not proof of causation; and a finding about guilt during play is not a measure of everyday empathy.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button

- Look for whether the study was experimental or correlational.
- Note whether it measured an immediate reaction, a later response during play, an attitude, or physiology.
- Keep the participants’ age group and the media type in view.
- Do not generalize a group-level result into a prediction about every player.
